From Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP)Many fishing access and other sites

administered by Montana Fish, Wildlife &Parks have seen increased use as people enjoythe outdoors in the midst of COVID-19.FWP encourages people to get outside buturges all recreationists to be good stewards ofthese sites. They belong to everyone and aremaintained through the sale of hunting andfishing licenses.

FWP staff have come across several inci-dents lately of still-smoldering campfires atfishing access sites and Wildlife ManagementAreas, and of noncombustible items beingdumped into and around firepits.

For example, a window air-conditioningunit was recently discarded on a picnic tablein Region 7 at East Rosebud FAS nearForsyth.

“There’s a lot of dumping things into the firepits and expecting the next person toburn it,” said Forsyth-area Game WardenWyatt Pickens. “Some are treating them liketrash cans.”

People may not see a problem with leav-ing trash in or near firepits to be burnedlater, but the trash may blow away, pile up

and create a fire haz-ard, or attract bearsand other wildlife –increasing chances ofencounters withhumans. Items likeglass, plastic andmetal also don’t breakdown after burning, leaving litter and haz-ards for the nextcamper.

Littering whilehunting, fishing orusing public lands ispunishable by a fineand a one-year sus-pension of hunting, fishing or trappingprivileges, Pickensnoted.

Recreationists areasked to be consciousof fire danger andthoroughly extinguish any campfires withwater or dirt before leaving the area. It takesonly a light breeze for coals to reignite and

spread. Do not use the firepits as a place todiscard trash or other items. All visitorsshould use the trash receptacles provided orpack their trash out with them. Also, dump-

ing of items at FWPsites is illegal.

The extra timespent cleaning up lit-tered sites takes awayfrom staff time to main-tain them for everyone’senjoyment. FWP invitesyou to enjoy the out-doors this summer, butplease help keep thesepublic resources in topshape!

To report instancesof dumping, littering orvandalism at FWP sites, please contact 1-800-TIP-MONT, your areawarden or regionalFWP office.

Montana Fish, Wildlife& Parks, through itsemployees and citizen com-mission, provides for the

stewardship of the fish, wildlife, parks, and recre-ational resources of Montana, while contributing tothe quality of life for present and future generations. •
