A look at efforts to create jobs in Sonoma County, the June primary election, and protecting vital data are subjects of discussion at the June presentation of Wake Up Petaluma, scheduled for June 26, 7:30 a.m., at Rooster Run.
Ben Stone, director of the Sonoma County Economic Development Board, will introduce a new aggressive EDB effort to create jobs and improve the
County’s economic climate. The efforts will include working to resolve current permitting bottlenecks.
Don Bennett, Argus-Courier political columnist and editor of Petaluma Business, will present an analysis of the June election, with a focus on the new open primary system and what it may portend for California politics.

Ultra-endurance athlete, Jason Lester (a Nike Athlete), will run through the Petaluma Village Premium Outlets on June 14, part of his Journey for a Better World. He will be running and biking over 4,000 miles across the United States, relaying the Nike message that a better world starts with sports.
The Outlets are looking for students interested in possibly running with Jason 3.65 miles into the store, cheerleaders and band members who would like to perform at this event, to help greet Jason in to our great community and town of Petaluma.

It seems like such a short time, but
before this month is out, a new leadership
team will assume responsibilities for
guiding the Chamber through the
coming year. Just before press time,
the winners of the Board election were
announced, and I want to extend my
personal congratulations to Katie Kerns
Davis, Tom Griffith, Thom Knudson,
and Richard Marzo.
We will be electing next year’s officers
at our board meeting in June, and the
new officers and Board will be sworn
in at our annual luncheon on June 28th.
My congratulations to all of the new
Board.
In retrospect, it has been a busy and
rewarding year at the Chamber. Our
membership is steady, our finances are
strong, and our huge army of volunteers
continues to make truly exemplary
contributions.
One of the year’s major
accomplishments was the development
of our new web-site, which has gone
beyond being just a source of information,
becoming a valuable interactive site
with marketing opportunities for our
members.
We now have a new welcome
package, a collection of local products
and gift items which was developed
collaboratively by our Economic
Development Committee and the City’s
Economic Development Manager. This
welcome package is being used to
welcome new businesses to Petaluma at
a joint visit by the City and the Chamber.
It is a job well done.
Leadership ClassEnrollment Open
Nobody disputes the fact that we live in a truly special community. Home town pride in Petaluma is probably as high or higher than in most communities in this country. Consequently, it is often humbling for many of us to learn that there are a number of things about our town of which we were completely unaware.
It was this understanding that few people get the opportunity to experience our town from a number of different directions that was the impetus for the Chamber’s Leadership Petaluma program. The current class graduates this month, which begs this question: Should you, or an employee, be in next year’s class?
This program, which will be on the third Tuesday of each month next class year, attempts to produce a slice of life from ten different sectors of our community. Every day is a full day, often followed by an after-work socializing opportunity in order to get to know classmates better.
The average annual class is about 25 people.
Next year’s schedule should give you a good idea of this program. It starts in August with a half-day orientation and getting-to-know-you exercises, and commences in earnest in September, with History Day. The class hears stories from local historians, and visits key historical sites.
In October, there is an all day retreat, where leadership experts share this knowledge of leadership skills with the class. In November, it is Government Day, and the class members meet and discuss issues with government officials at different levels.
December features non-profit/community service day, and offers an inside look at the full range of primarily volunteer-driven services being provided to our community. Then, in January, it is Public Safety Day, with a fascinating behind the scenes look at the lives of our law enforcement and fire protection agencies.
In February, it is Education Day, with visits to local schools and meetings with local educators. March is Business Day, with a round of behind the scenes glimpses of local businesses that engage in everything from oyster shells to high tech.
Two community sectors come together in April when it is Arts and Tourism Day. Petaluma has become home to artists of a number of disciplines, while tourism has become a key element of our local economic health. In May, it’s Agriculture Day, and visits to local farms and agri-businesses to get an understanding of how important Ag really is to Petaluma.
Then, it is all capped off with graduation in June, where students adorn their caps with items describing their business and their background.
Following graduation, many students join the Leadership Alumni, maintaining friendships formed during the year, and helping the program succeed in future years.

One of my objectives this year was
to get our Board engaged in the full
range of Chamber activities, and the
Board responded with vigor, including
showing up at city council meeting
when the occasion required a show of
business support.
Each of our committees continued
to make valuable contributions. Worth
noting, among a number of committee
accomplishments, is the Ag Committee’s
new Ag video, and the Ambassadors
Committee’s huge success in hosting the
Northern California Ambassadors Rally
for all the Chambers in the region.
Our Business Expo once again was
packed with both booths and attendance,
and our Leadership Petaluma again
enjoyed an overflow class.
In short it has been a rewarding and
enjoyable tenure serving you as Chamber
President. I want to thank all my fellow
Board members for being such an
outstanding and caring group, all of our
dedicated volunteers, and particularly
our President Circle members, whose
support has been critical in keeping our
Chamber vital during times of a sluggish
economy.
I really want to give an enthusiastic tip
of the hat to Onita and the staff. Despite
cutbacks on staff numbers, this group
collectively continues to produce an
amazing amount of benefit for our entire
membership.
Their efforts were recognized when
Northbay Biz awarded the Petaluma
Chamber the Gold Award at their annual
awards ceremony.

American AgCredit GetsCounty Fair Honor
The Western Fairs Association designed its Blue Ribbon Award program to allow each Fair in the Association to recognize an individual or organization that has provided support. Traditionally, a volunteer, educator or sponsor is honored. This year, the Sonoma County Fair has selected American AgCredit as a Blue Ribbon Award Winner.
American AgCredit is the sixth largest farm credit cooperative in the nation and provides lending and other financial services to farmers, ranchers, agribusinesses and rural homeowners.
Established in 1916 and with 35 branch offices throughout the Western and Midwestern states, American AgCredit has its corporate headquarters in Santa Rosa. This home base position has generated deep involvement in the Sonoma County Fair, and the Fair is extremely grateful for its good fortune.

Sonoma County Fair Entry Guidebooks Now Available
The Sonoma County Fair 2012 Guidebooks are now available. Guidebooks are free and will be available at the Chamber office, Sonoma County Library branches and at the Fair Entry Office at 1350 Bennett Valley Road in Santa Rosa. The 2012 Fair runs Wednesday, July 25 through Sunday, August 12.
This year’s theme is “Cruise on In”, and exhibitors will find a variety of theme-related opportunities among the hundreds of categories offered. To celebrate the nautical theme, Fair
organizers have added such offerings as a Table Setting Competition, a Design Your Own Burgee Flag Contest and a Cruise Ship Photo Contest.
Entering the Fair is easy. Exhibitors can either fill out the entry form in the Guidebook or go to the Fair’s website and register online. Paper entry forms must be received at the Fair Entry Office or postmarked no later than 5 pm on Friday, June 8. Online entries continue through Friday, June 22. Most items must be delivered to the Fairgrounds in early to mid-July.
