OTR/WVTR Simulator

Our web based calculator for barrier properties is an example of what our organisation can achieve due to their high competence. The barrier calculator has become a popular tool among professionals in the packaging industry.

The simulation model estimates the OTR or WVTR of packages by most plastics material like PE, PP, PET, PA and EVOH. Barrier properties of co-injection or co-extrusion multilayer and in-mould-label solutions can be studied and evaluated for cups, bottles, films and square containers.

The flexibility of geometrical options, permeability properties and environmental conditions provides a useful tool for the design, development and application of plastic packaging.

Scientific Laboratory

We analyse Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR) according to the principle of Ambient Oxygen Ingress Rate (AOIR). This technique is reliable and fast and especially suited for analysis of any shape of packaging, sheets and films.

AssumptionsThe calculation models are developed under following assumptions:

Surface at the top of the containers, i.e. the lid or cap, is assumed to be impermeable and is not included in the calculations of OTR/WVTR.

The wall and layer thickness of the container, laminates or IML barrier film is assumed constant throughout article surface.

Calculations are based on an empty container.

For OTR, the oxygen level inside container is initially assumed to be 0 Vol %. The humidity can be varied as input parameter

Steady state condition of permeation. The amount of permeant passing through each layer is identical, and equal to the amount passing through the total structure. Diffusion takes place in one direction only.

The concentration distance relationship through the polymer is linear. The permeability coefficient is assumed to be a constant of the material and not dependent on sample thickness.

Calculation stepsThe first step is to choose the type of packaging container:

Cuboid Bottle Frustum Film/sheet

Define geometry parameters (e.g. length, radius, height)1. Choose materials (define layer materials and thickness)2. Define environmental conditions (temperature, humidity)3. Push calculate4. View and evaluate calculation results5.

PROJECT EXAMPLE - WVTR of a cereal packIf we compare the WVTR of two different films of 30µm each it is possible to simulate the total moisture ingress for a specific pouch size as a function of time as in below graph. This gives the packer information to estimate the shelf life of the cereal product.
