FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

Hi Everyone,

The year is coming to a close all to quickly with the final events for 2017 already upon us. It has been an amazing year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you our valued members of the HSV Owners Club family for your support of the many events in 2017.

It has been a sad year on one hand with the closing of the Holden factory, how-ever we now have to look to the future with excitement and anticipation as to what will be next in the performance car range that we as a club can add to the mas-sively impressive range of HDT’s and HSV’s already proudly owned by our mem-bers and will be proudly displayed where ever we go during our events from here on in. This is now our club’s heritage and will be always treated with the respect, passion and pride it deserves.

Friday 10th -12th November Coffs Harbour weekend again was a great event, meeting up with our fellow club members from the NSW club sharing great stories, enjoying dinners as well as a Saturday cruise run up the range to the Dorrigo Hotel for lunch followed by the state of origin lazer tag competition. NSW may have won last year, however this year we were on a mission to bring it back to Queensland, and we did in fine form I must add. The first 4 highest scourers were from Queensland and we were determined to win, however next year they will no doubt make an all-out onslaught to take the trophy to NSW… We’ll be ready.

Saturday 11th sprints at Lakeside Raceway was down on numbers from last year however the guys that joined in had a great time and quite a lively event for the last round for the year. This is also a milestone for the HSV Owners Club Qld being the 35th year since the club was originally formed. We boast the oldest HSV club in Australia starting out as the HDT Owners club in 1982 then becoming the HSV Owners club inc HDT. Very few car clubs are in existence for that many years without the dedication of its committee and members. We look forward to the next 35 years and future members and committee to continue to lead this great club. We all had a great time at the 35th Anniversary Celebrations held at the Ipswich Rail Museum on Saturday 18th November 2017.

Coming events The new calendar for the club events of 2018 are displayed on the inside back page of this magazine and as well as the club web main page. The unofficial cruise will be held Sunday 14th January 2018 Meeting point 8.30am will be the BP road house Bruce Highway Burpengary for a 9am start. Make sure your car is fueled up as the run will take 1.5 to 2hrs and we will be going to an old country hotel for lunch. We will be stopping on the way for a break where you can have a coffee and comfort break.

Still 2 events this year1. Friday 24th Nov Motorama dinner and charity as well as last general meeting for the club this year, bookings essential to get a seat. 2. Family Christmas break up @ Lake Samsonvale. Please note: New venue this year as per magazine. Yes, Santa will be there!!!!

Motor Sport Update The super car championship is down to the wire with the last round scheduled for Newcastle street circuit for the first time this year. Championship contenders1. Jamie Whincup 28502. Scott McLaughlan 28203. Fabian Coulthard 26744. Chaz Mostert 25865. Shane VanGisbergen 2574 As you can see there is only 276 points between No.1 and No.5, anything can happen in racing. The top 2 have only 30 points between them, if either make the smallest mistake this can cost the championship. Should either have a problem then the top 5 have a chance at winning the crown, this is the closest racing for a championship that has ever existed. Can’t wait to see who takes home the prize. Thank you all for your support for 2017. Please refer to the 2018 events on the inside back cover of the magazine as well as the main club web page.

Look forward to seeing you all in 2018 Les Gray -President

Unofficial CruiseSunday 14th January 2018

To kick off the year we are starting with our annual unofficial cruise. After the X-mas break it is always a great time to get the toys out, blow off the dust and enjoy a cruise with great

friends.

This year’s cruise we are heading to Blackbutt to have lunch at the Historic Radnor Hotel. The cruise is leaving from BP

road house Caboolture (northbound) on Sunday 14th January 2018. Enjoy a bit of a sleep in, the meeting time is 8.30am for a 9am departure. The Radnor Hotel was built over 100 years ago in Blackbutt, a town famous for it’s tall tree’s

suitable for logging.

We will be heading up the D’Aguilar Highway cruising to Woodford for a pit stop and breather, then continuing up the highway to Blackbutt to the Radnor Hotel for lunch arriving between 12-12.30pm where we can gather around, sit and

enjoy some lunch and great company.

Hope to see you in the new year! Bring on 2018!!

Please collect your time slips and if you want to be in the club scoring hand them in at 6.00pm to the appropriate club official.

For 2018 we are going to run the dial your own time format for scor-ing. After your test passes you will hand in your information sheet which will identify you and your race number and you will nominate your time. Points will be allocated for the closest 2 passes for the re-mainder of the meet to the nominated time and you will need to com-pete in both events to qualify for the end of year trophy. The trophies on offer will be First to Third Male and First to Third Female.

It is always a low stress great fun event. So please come out and have some fun and bring your mates with you. No need to advise your attendance in advance. Just make sure you are at the main gate by 4.00pm on the day.

Special Interest VL SS Group A SV was the first vehicle produced from the Holden- TWR agreement and, despite being a GMHA contract build, is still regarded as the vehicle which launched the HSV brand. With the requirements of Group A regulations, Holden had to have a car capable of being competitive off the showroom floor, with a bodykit that could produce large amounts of downforce as well as being low drag. TWR developed the famous Walkinshaw bodykit that was stated to reduce drag by more than 25% over the previous HDT SS Group A version. The VL SS Group A SV quickly developed the nickname “The Batmobile” and simply the "Walkinshaw" after TWR’s chief. Powered by a modified version of the 5.0-litre (180kW/380Nm) due to its homologation to Group A racing rules, the VL SS Group A SV was made as a limited run of 500 from March-November 1988, with an extra 250 produced due to popular demand. Costing approximately $45,500 at the time, the VL Group A came in the distinctive “Panorama Silver” – named after the famed racing circuit at Bathurst.

VN SV5000 was arguably the car that “put HSV on the map”. Welcoming the most significant early major investment in HSV’s history, the engine development program came to life with performance being increased to 200kW for the first time. With very limited volume, it was costly, as was the superb body styling package, but the result (many will argue) was the best looking, best performing car ever produced for the time. Build No.42 in Rose Grey was sent to the UK for HSV founder Tom Walkinshaw’s use and was the car that featured in a Wheels magazine European comparison against a selection of European sports sedans from BMW, Vauxhall and Mercedes. Dubbed the "Concord of sports sedans", the SV5000 was significantly quicker than the rest, with a caption in the magazine reading "European high-tech was no substitute for fuel-injected Australian cubes. The SV5000 simply drove away."

VN ClubSport was an instant hit, and the first time HSV used the “Clubsport” nameplate. Offering the right mix of affordability and performance, the initial production run was 60 vehicles, all painted in Asteroid Silver and with standard grey cloth interior. However, due to its popular-ity, a further 350 vehicles were ordered and built by the end of the VN Series. During the VN ClubSport era, a branding change also occurred for the company, with all parts and options relating to Holden Special Vehicles known from then on as “HSV” instead of SV (the SV initials were reserved for model names only). The VN ClubSport helped kick start an era of the affordable muscle car and the nameplate has become HSV’s longest running, and biggest selling, model in HSV’s vehicle history.

VG Maloo Australians have always had a love affair with the utility, and in October 1990, the first HSV version was built. Making its debut at the 1990 Sydney Motor Show, the VG Maloo (the Aboriginal word for “thunder”) was the star of the HSV stand. Powered by a 5.0-litre V8 engine (180kW/400Nm), the Maloo was originally available in Alpine White and Maranello Red (which was the colour chosen for the Motor Show appearance), came with a choice of three exterior graphics decal packs, plus velour interior accents including the sunvisors and door inserts. VN Group A SS the story really began under the bonnet. The fuel-injected 5.0-litre V8 was completely redeveloped, requiring an extra strength manual gearbox, and produced 215kW and 410Nm. Equipped with a six-speed manual ZF gearbox, it gave you all the goosebumps and butterflies a fully-fledged race car would. The suspension was thoroughly reworked with higher rate front and rear springs, heavier anti-roll bars, and Bilstein front and rear dampers. The VN Group A SS was a true supercar of its time, and the last of the Group A line.

HSV VP GTS was a large, rear-wheel drive sedan. This new breed of Australian Sportscar was powered by a 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine that was mated to a four- speed automatic transmission. Production of this flagship GTS ended in December 1992 and was limited to 130 vehicles.

VR GTS featured a newly developed 5.7 litre 215kW engine coupled with a six-speed American Borg Warner T56 transmission. In a world-first, the VR GTS also included the Hydratrak viscous limited slip differential which was developed in conjunction with BTR Engineering in Australia. The significant engine upgrade involved over 15,000 man-hours of development over two years, and was tested in eight vehicles over 100,000 kilometres. The exterior also received a facelift, with approximately 80 percent of the vehicle being revamped and, in an Australian production car first, the VR GTS was fitted with a driver’s side airbag.

VS GTS could be identified by its highly-polished three-spoke ‘Aero’ alloy wheels and new bold grille which protruded further forward creating further differentiation to previous models. A new rear spoiler design incorporated a high-mount stop lamp which was fitted with crystal-style lenses. An automatic level ride suspension, “Superlift” dampers and front passenger airbag were all introduced as options.

VS GTSR HSV literally rocked the performance car pages of the nation’s car magazines with the release of the bright XU3 yellow VS GTSR. It was as close as an HSV road car could get to its race winning Holden Racing Team cars of the 1996 season. Only available in one bright colour – Yellah – the GTSR was available with a 6-speed manual transmission and featured a look-alike rear spoiler from that of the HRT race car. Carbon fibre decor panels were also used on the exterior for the first time in HSV production.

VSII Grange owner was presented with a uniquely numbered bottle of 1984 Penfolds Grange Hermitage, to further emphasise the prestige status and heritage of the vehicles. Further differentiation to other HSV models at the time included recalibrated power steering to produce better feel at lower vehicle speeds, along with suspension modifications. The VSII Grange also received a wiper blade cleaning groove in the windscreen, which cleaned the blade each time it passed over the groove.

VT GTS series was based on an all-new body design and was the last series to feature the Australian 5.0 litre and 5.7 litre V8 engines. With revised suspension tuning and brake design, at the time the VT GTS was one of the best performance cars under $200,000. The driver was more comfortable than ever with HSV specific designed seats and trim built by the Lear Company. Coulson Performance seats were trimmed in ‘Corio’ fabric, and featured larger side bolsters and upper wings.

HSV VTII SV99 mimicked the original HSV SV88 in its naming convention, and, with just 99 examples built, was fitted with the imported Chevrolet 5.7 litre LS1 V8 engine which pumped out 250kW. Other unique features included premium brakes and suspension, 18-inch gold rims and a performance exhaust, along with a mustard leather interior and dash mounted identification plaque.

VX ClubSport R8 picked up a more “angular” appearance, along with all new 18-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the introduction of “set and forget” climate control, and a Maestro sound system with 10 stack CD, were luxuries new to the ClubSport nameplate. Under the bonnet, power from the 5.7 litre LS1 Chevrolet Heritage engine was bumped up to 255kW and 475Nm, while performance brakes, with new grooved rotors, further enhanced its track-bred identity. Revised suspension settings improved damping with better valving during the mid-range while helping the vehicle cope better with larger bumps.

VX GTS continued with the awesome Callaway 300 kW engine, which gained the latest higher volume inlet manifold, new Bosch fuel injectors and new HSV software for im proved engine refinement. Externally, the GTS was the ultimate expression of HSV's angular new sports styling with its stainless-steel mesh grille inserts, additional colour accents, double-D exhaust outlet and contoured GTS badgework. The GTS alloy wheels, with their special medium chrome shadow finish, framed HSV's cross-drilled, four-piston caliper Premium brakes with the latest silver hubs. The GTS interior featured HSV's contoured seats in optional leather, soft touch instrument panel surround and laser cut stainless steel pedal and footrest pads.

GTS Coupé carried all the attributes HSV fans were known to love, including the legendary, Callaway-developed, 300kW 5.7 litre C4B V8 engine, teamed with a 6-speed close-ratio gearbox complete with a “Quick-shift” short throw feature. To bring all this power to a stop, the GTS Coupé was the first HSV to be fitted with a six-piston brake package, developed in conjunction with AP Racing, including enormous 362mm front and 343mm, rear discs, both cross-drilled and grooved. The GTS Coupé had the looks to match its high-performance credentials too. Immediately distinguishable, it featured a two-door body, contrasting ac-centing on the bumpers and side skirts, stunning 19 inch wheels, a subtle roof spoiler and an evolution of the double “D” exhaust outlets.

VY GTS saw a new era of sophistication, with suave interior and exterior styling and high quality materials, including polypropylene full injection moulded body components and premium fabrics and leathers. A 12-month drivetrain recalibration program saw a smoother, more refined delivery of performance from HSV’s 300kW C4B V8, the last time the Callaway-developed engine was featured in an HSV sedan. Befitting HSV’s most powerful model, the VY GTS sedan came with one of the most powerful braking systems fitted to any production car in the world at the time - the HSV Six-Piston Braking System. The race-bred system (shared with its HSV Coupé namesake) was developed in conjunction with AP Racing in the UK and sported six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers acting on 362mm front and 343mm rear cross-drilled and grooved rotors.

VY2 GTS Coupé was the vehicle’s dynamic styling which maintained its strikingly aggressive presence on the street. Thus, exterior changes were limited to a blackout tail light treatment and a discrete GTS badge in the lower grille. GTS Coupé also received a new 19-inch wheel design from its sedan namesake. While the exterior changes were subtle, the interior received a substantial update, the centerpiece of which was a stylish new dash layout (seen on Y Series) complete with HSV’s unique steering wheel and white ‘chameleon’ instrument cluster, including HSV logo and the vehicle’s individual build number incorporated into the Multi-Function Display. Sporting touches included race-style alloy pedals and HSV’s unique centre sports binnacle incorporating oil pressure and volt gauges.Luxury appointments weren’t forgotten either with standard dual zone climate control air-conditioning, a Blaupunkt premium sound system with in-dash six stack CD, dual foldaway cup holders and unique to Coupé leather trim. GTS Coupé’s raw 300kW top end perfor-mance didn’t change but recalibrations to the C4B V8 brought significantly enhanced bottom-end power delivery and overall smoothness. Automatic transmission was an option on GTS Coupé for the first time and, due to revisions and recalibrations, both automatic driv-etrains offered more refined gearshifts. Assisted by its highly rigid chassis the original Coupé boasted one of HSV’s best ever ride and handling packages but that didn’t stop HSV’s chassis engineers refining it even further for Coupé 2. A revised power steering gear calibration sets the scene by delivering greater on-centre steering feel and a more linear response to driver inputs.

HSV Coupe4 was the first fully-fledged, Australian-made, all-wheel drive performance car, and the result of a nine-month design, development and marketing program shared between HSV and Holden. Rather than the HSV core vehicle arriving from Holden’s South Australian production line to be modified at HSV’s Clayton factory, it was the first time an HSV model started the modification process at the Holden factory… mainly due to the body-shell needing to accommodate larger wheels and an increased track, together with the all-wheel drive powertrain. Despite the HSV-enhanced 5.7-litre LS1 producing “just” 270kW – compared to the 300kW available on the earlier GTS Coupe, and 285kW on the remaining HSV range of the time - the Coupe4’s traction control-based HSV “Quad Drive" permanent all-wheel drive system could not be beat. It was calibrated to provide grip in a wide range of surface conditions, with delivery to the ground an eye opener.

Z Series Maloo R8 saw HSV introduce another piece of performance hardware – the 6.0 litre LS2 V8 Engine. Working closely with GM powertrain engineers, along with its Holden partners, HSV adapted this brand-new engine to fit its premier performance range and adjusted it to suit local conditions. In typical HSV fashion exterior styling also made a statement with Z Series. Importantly, there was a much clearer division between relevant models within the range. ‘Sports Performance’ continued HSV’s traditional aggressive, exuberant, in-your-face styling for the Maloo R8. Thanks to HSV engineers the Z Series Maloo R8 once again claimed several ‘firsts’ for a local sports ute. For the first-time customers, could enjoy the benefits of 19-inch wheels and tyres, along with Traction Control and Multi-link independent rear suspension, all of which were totally exclusive to the Z Series Maloo models. In 2006, and with Australian Touring Car and Bathurst champion Mark Skaife at the helm, the HSV crew headed to the Federal

Government’s Woomera Prohibited Area in outback South Australia. Conducted in strictly controlled conditions the Z Series Maloo R8 was recorded at 265.72 km/h, and speed 2 was recorded at 277.16 km/h, setting the new world record at a blistering 271.44 km/h and awarding the Z Series Maloo R8 the title of “World’s Fastest Production Pickup/Utility”.

E Series GTS model and its remarkable list of specifications and features marked it as a more than worthy successor to its illustrious forebears. It immediately stamped its authority with increased power, an awesome new braking system, high-tech suspension, more rubber on the road for greater grip and an on-road presence that pointed to its status as one of the fastest four-door sedans in the world. Not only did it drive, stop and look better than any previous model, it also carried the best pricing proposition ever for a GTS. The ‘Sports Performance’ styling package opened with a finely chiselled twin-nostril grille above a front facia that featured a dynamic lower intake complete with V8 Supercar-like pseudo brake cooling ducts and a set of driving and fog lamps. The side elevation was dominated by E Series signature fender vents (consisting of a totally unique to HSV fully metal pressed lower guard section) and radical looking 20-inch alloy wheel design which deliberately exposeed the awesome new HSV brake package, as well as emphasising the vehicle’s rear drivetrain. A more distinctive and aggressive GTS appearance was created by ‘Matte Black’ bonnet header strip, fender vents and rear spoiler supports. The interior was as overtly sporting as the exterior with colour combinations and quality trim materials carefully selected to reinforce the message. The bespoke GTS seats boasted a fabulous race-inspired design that incorporated exceptionally generous side bolsters and its own exclusive centre bolster finished in suede for texture contrast and even greater lateral support. Other sporting highlights included a unique HSV instrument cluster, as well as a smoothly integrated three gauge, dash top auxiliary cluster and a chunky design steering wheel rim.Under the bonnet the unique-to-HSV 6.0 litre LS2 V8 produced an even more exhilarating 307kW @ 6000 rpm (from 297kW @ 6000rpm) and 550Nm @ 4400rpm (from 530Nm @ 4400rpm) thanks to a revised intake and exhaust system (including new smooth flowing ‘four-into-two-into-one’ tubular extractors) and a 24-month program to refine the engine calibrations. That not only made GTS (and its E Series stable-mates) the fastest HSV and one of the fastest sedans in the world at the time, it also made it a member of the ultra-elite ‘four second’ club. MRC technology took GTS into an all new realm with, not only the most sophisticated and advanced suspension systems fitted to any Australian manufactured vehicle, but also a system that offered a clear lead over most European manufacturers. Developed over 3½ years at a cost of $4.5 million, this electronically controlled damper system offered GTS drivers two modes – ‘Performance’ or ‘Track’ – that transformed their vehicle from a luxury ride bias to race track inspired chassis at the press of a dash mounted button.

W427 show car at the Melbourne Motor Show, as the final instalment of the company’s 20th Anniversary. Some 4 months later, it was confirmed that Australia’s true ‘Supercar’ would go into regular production, with build capped at 200. Powered by the legendary LS7 7.0 litre engine, the W427 delivered an earth shattering 375kW and 640Nm of torque. Featuring an exclusive active exhaust flow management system, bold supercar styling, unique, machine faced 20” alloy wheels and fully calibrated Magnetic Ride Control (MRC), it was set to take on the world. W427 sill plates marked your entry into Performance seats trimmed in Red Hot leather with W427 adornment. Driver and front passenger seats featured 8-way electric adjustment and the Multi-function steering wheel, gear selector and centre console arm rest were also trimmed with matching Red Hot leather. A 6.5" multi-function colour LCD screen displayed stereo, heating and air conditioning information at the touch of a button. Form and function combined, with the large W427 air chute creating a menacing front fascia. Projector headlights and front driving lights swept all before them while a W427 carbon fibre rear spoiler was true to the racecar DNA. Unique W427 exhaust tips continued the castellated theme, introduced by former Wheels Young Designer of the Year, Adam Dean Smith, with the theme extending to W427 badging.

E Series 2 GTS, looks definitely played a part. The ‘shockwave’ inspired shape of the front grille made an unforgettable first impression that couldn’t be ignored. The distinctive ‘E’ shaped vents, with integrated turn signals, sat boldly above the GTS badge, which carried a legend built over four decades of Australian motoring history. Twin-intercepting LED tail lamps and the HSV Performance rear spoiler completed the look, while the Bi-Modal exhaust opens up under acceleration giving the GTS an awe-inspiring engine note. Even before 325kW of power is unleashed, the E Series 2 GTS driver felt completely spoiled. HSV Performance seats with Onyx leather trim embraced you while 8-way electric adjustment on both front seats ensured the perfect fit, like every part of this hand-crafted Australian masterpiece. When you drove the E Series 2 GTS, you felt connected to the road like never before, sensing the bitumen through wide 8.5" front rims, with unique Bridgestones specially designed

for GTS and the Australian roads it travels. Combined with a new lower, stiffer suspension and E2 Performance alloys, this achieved a degree of control normally experienced only on a racetrack. And, because braking is the most instinctive reaction of all, stopping power could be given a massive boost from the SV Enhanced 6-piston front brakes – available exclusively for GTS owners.

25th Anniversary GTS featured a number of styling, performance and technology upgrades. The story started with the addition of an all-new, light-weight, 20” forged alloy wheel finished in Satin Graphite. This forged wheel delivered a weight saving in excess of 22kg over the standard GTS wheel set, reducing unsprung weight by an impressive 8%. “Vector” hood scoops and side vents, also finished in distinctive Satin Graphite, combined with the forged alloys to deliver menacing street appeal. From a performance perspective, HSV has added six-piston brakes which, with a 50% increase in pad area, delivered optimum braking performance, while technology received a boost with the addition of HSV’s Side Blind Zone Alert, helping alert the driver to objects adjacent to the vehicle. Limited to just 125 units in Australia and 15 in New Zealand, with each build plate individually numbered, HSV’s 25th Anniversary GTS was available in Heron, Sting, Phantom and Hazard and also featured unique 25th anniversary ornamentation including seat embroidery, exterior badging, sill plates, EDI “start-up” screen and an internal I.D. plate.

Gen F GTS In May of 2013, HSV announced the introduction of the fastest, most powerful performance production car ever built in Australia, confirming full details of the ground-breaking GTS to be powered by a 6.2 litre LSA supercharged V8 that delivered 430 kilowatts of power and 740 Newton-metres of torque. With such a powerful engine came the requirement for a raft of unique componentry including:• Eaton 4 lobe rotors, 9psi boost, 1.9 litres of air per revolution• Stand-alone water to air charge-air cooling system• Stand-alone transmission and differential cooling system• Water to oil engine oil cooling system• Bi-Modal air intake system• Hi-flow exhaust system with cross-pipe intermediate and Bi-Modal mufflers• Hi-flow exhaust manifold and catalytic converters• Unique rear suspension module with 9.9“ differential, upgraded drive and prop shafts GTS’ braking capacity was dramatically increased with AP radical forged 6-piston brake calipers with two-piece rotors front and rear fitted as standard equipment. Combined with increased brake rotor diameters, the calipers, forged from 6061 T6 aluminium, offering a vastly improved strength-to-weight ratio and delivering noticeable improvements in brake modulation and feel. Rear brake pad size was also increased by 12%. In a first for an Australian made vehicle, the GEN-F GTS was fitted with brake Torque Vectoring. At the time only fitted to a few exclusive global marques, HSV’s brake Torque Vectoring helped reduce understeer by generating a “rotational moment” in the rear axle when the vehicle is under power. The vehicle’s Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system detected the understeer event, applied braking to the inside rear wheel and transferred torque to the outside rear wheel. The vehicle also received third generation Magnetic Ride Control (MRC) featuring three independent settings – Touring, Sport and Track. Hardware and software improvements combined to deliver greater body control, sharper handling and significant improvements in ride quality over the E3 model. To assist the driver in manipulating the vari-ous electronic vehicle performance systems at his disposal, HSV introduced a Driver Preference Dial. Located conveniently behind the gear shifter, the Driver Preference Dial adjusted the vehicle’s ESC, Traction Control, Launch Control (manual transmission), Torque Vectoring, Electric Power Steering (another new addition to the GEN-F range), MRC and Bi-Modal Exhaust, according to four distinct pre-set modes – Touring, Sport, Performance and Track. In doing so, the vehicle’s handling characteristics instantly changed. A new front-end design featured bold graphics and shallow ramp angles that emphasised width and stance. Central to the new look was a “twin-nostril” grille and an all-new fascia, unique to the GTS, that helped deliver both an aggressive look and the air intake surface area required to cool the powertrain. The vehicle also featured new light-weight 20” “Blade” forged alloy wheels finished in Satin Graphite which were wrapped in Continental 255/35 R20 (front) and 275/35 R20 (rear) tyres. The wider front tyres delivered improved grip while the higher tyre walls contributed to a noticeable improvement in ride comfort. The rear of the GEN-F GTS received just as significant a make-over as the front end while an all-new interior signalled a new era for HSV.

Gen F GTS Maloo which was responsible for changing the way we look at utes forever. Powered by the much acclaimed 430 kilowatt / 740 Newton-metre 6.2 litre Supercharged LSA engine, the limited edition GTS Maloo became an instant collector’s piece. Complementing the LSA powertrain was HSV’s premium braking package - lightweight AP radical forged 6-piston brake calipers with 390mm (front) and 372mm (rear) 2-piece rotors. In addition, and what is believed to have been a global first for a utility, the GTS Maloo was fitted with Torque Vectoring. At the time only fitted to a few exclusive global marques and HSV’s GEN-F GTS, Torque Vectoring helped reduce understeer by generating a “rotational moment” in the rear axle when the vehicle is under power. The vehicle’s Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system detected the understeer event, applied braking to the inside rear wheel and transferred torque to the outside rear wheel. The GTS Maloo’s street presence was clearly identifiable through the adoption of GTS’s unique front fascia design that delivered both an aggressive stance and an extensive air-intake surface area to deliver the required engine cooling. HSV’s unique Daytime Running Lamps (DRLs), side skirts, twin-hump hard tonneau and performance sail-plane helped complete the visual makeover and were complemented by light-weight 20” “Blade” forged alloy wheels presented in a new “Dark Stainless” finish. Shadow-chrome quad exhaust tips and a unique number plate surround paintout combined to deliver an aggressive rear-end look with “LSA” and “GTS” badges adorning the tail-gate. HSV Performance seats wrapped in Onyx leather trim, or the optional “Red Hot” leather trim, set off an interior which also featured a broad range of driver convenience and safety technologies including HSV’s Driver Preference Dial, Traction Control, Launch Control (manual transmission), Torque Vectoring, Electric Power Steering and electric Bi-Modal Exhaust. Head-up Display, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning and Rain Sensing Wipers enhanced the driver environment while the unique Enhanced Driver Interface (EDI) system provided the driver with all the performance data he or she required. Build of the GTS Maloo was limited to just 250 vehicles (240 for Australia and 10 for New Zealand) with each build plate individually numbered.

GTSR with more than 430kW of power, I probably should’ve turned around and headed home a while back. I haven’t though, because – fortunately – HSV’s second-most- powerful-ever model isn’t just fast, it’s also bloody good. Although it’s difficult to get over just how angry and sinister the GTSR sounds, go beyond its glorious aural delights, and you’ll find a car that’s hooked up, sorted, and far more agile, pointy, and responsive than a five-metre-long, 1841kg (tare), four-door sedan has any right to be. Teaming a supercharged 6.2-litre LSA V8 engine with a six-speed manual transmission, the 2017 HSV GTSR costs $109,490 (before on-road costs) and boasts 435kW of power at 6150rpm and 740Nm of torque at 3850rpm – up 5kW from the no-longer-available GTS.

W1 if it existed – would ever be more than a power upgrade on the existing LSA engine and Zeta architecture. My engineering mind refused to believe anybody would bother sourcing 300 engines never before used, engineer bespoke components unique to this chassis and then commit hundreds of hours to testing and certifying the package. But, they did it. HSV went out on a limb and green lit a project for 300 very special cars. The GTSR W1 is likely to be the last Australian car ever built once Holden wraps up production in October and at this very point in time, it appears that all 300 of them have been accounted for. While the $169,900 (plus on-road costs) asking price may seem steep, it's well short of what people are actually paying their dealers. In a desperate move to secure a car, some buyers have spent close to $300,000 to ensure they have a GTSR W1 in their driveways.Specifications• Engine: LS9 6.2-litre supercharged V8• Power: 474kW (636hp)• Torque: 815Nm (602ft.lb)• Performance: 0-100km/h: 4.1s• Price: $169,990 (plus on-road costs)• Build numbers: 300 units• Weight: 1850kg

Lets see what install for us in 2018 and beyond, exciting times ahead that I’m sure

Hi Everyone

Merry Christmas to all members and their families. I hope all your Christmas plans are running smoothly and you have put your order in to the big man in the red suit. It’s hard to believe how quick the year has gone, with so many events on in our lives the weeks just tick over so fast.

We had one new member join us over the past month. The HSVOCQ would like to extend a big welcome to Mark Young. Mark has a 2008 Clubsport in Heron white. Please make him feel welcome in our club.

It’s that time of year when you can start getting ready to pay your renewals for 2018. The membership renewal will be $80 again. You will find a renewal form enclosed with this magazine. The club takes payments in cash, cheque, money order or credit card. Plenty of options.

The club has had a great 2017, the organised events have been fantastic. Ian the king of cruises had a couple of rippers this year, Sonya always has her head ticking over thinking about her long weekends away and merchandise. Craig has the car show scene smoking along and Peter and Alastair are the hot lap gurus. Les has his finger on the pulse and keeps the club’s best interests in mind all of the time. That leaves me with the ‘allrounder’ Andrew, between his full-on work commitments he never misses a beat, like a good old Aussie 308.

Once again, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
