WelcomeThank you for purchasing EVID™ Seriesloudspeakers. Read through this manual tofamiliarize yourself with the features,applications, and precautions before youuse these products.

EVID™ Series loudspeakers use inno-vative design and materials to providepremium-level performance from compactsurface-mount speakers.

Four models comprise the EVID™ Series:the 6.2 with dual 6-inch LF drivers and a 1-inch titanium tweeter with waveguide; the4.2 with dual 4-inch LF drivers and a 1-inch titanium tweeter with waveguide; the3.2 with dual 3.5-inch LF drivers and a .75-inch titanium direct radiator tweeter. TheEVID™ 12.1, a subwoofer designed to aug-ment and extend the full-range model’s low-frequency response completes the line.

Model Summary

EVID™ 3.2Most compact of the EVID™ Series, theEVID™ 3.2 uses dual 3.5-inch LF driverswith a .75-inch titanium direct radiatortweeter to provide high-fidelity, full-rangesound over an extremely wide coveragearea. The EVID™ 3.2t includes a trans-former for 70V or 100V systems.

EVID™ 4.2The compact EVID™ 4.2 delivers very full-range sound from its dual 4-inch LF driversand a 1-inch titanium tweeter with wave-guide. It is able to deliver a 110-dB soundlevel over a wide coverage area. The EVID™4.2t includes a multi-tap transformer for70V or 100V line distribution systems.

EVID™ 6.2The EVID™ 6.2 is an extended-range high-output speaker with dual 6.5-inch woofersand a 1-inch titanium tweeter with wave-guide, designed for high SPL over a widecoverage area. The EVID™ 6.2t includes amulti-tap transformer for a 70V or 100Vline distribution system.

EVID™ 12.1This subwoofer’s unique 12-inch dual-voice-coil woofer design and side/front angled portsystem allows for powerful low-frequencyreinforcement from a flexible, compact wall-or ceiling-mounted enclosure. The EVID™12.1's full, rich bass is an ideal addition toany EVID™ system.

SAM™ (Strong-Arm-Mount™)SystemEVID™’s SAM™ system (Strong-Arm-Mount™) excels at meeting the four require-ments for mounting FGM/BGM systems:simple, quick, versatile, and reliable. Threeeasy steps and you are done: Attach the sur-face bracket to the wall or ceiling; attach theEVID™ enclosure to the bracket with thesocket-head bolt; aim the enclosure andtighten the bolt. SAM™ allows greater flexi-bility for aiming than ball-type mounts thatlimit range of motion when not on center.Typical ball designs have limited rotationwhen pointing straight ahead, and even thatis reduced when the enclosure contacts thewall and is moved off axis. By contrast,SAM™ allows full rotation even at fullsweep. Figure 4 shows SAM™’s range of rotation (note that EVID™’s curved cabinetallows it to rotate much further [90 degrees]than a rectangular or trapezoidal box).Figure 5 shows the range of sweep motionleft and right on the wall. All three modelsallow 100 degrees of sidewise motion.

Step-by-Step Installationand Wiring (3.2, 4.2, 6.2)

Step 1: Mount the SAM™ BracketThe SAM™ bracket can be mounted oneither side of the speaker, enabling optimalconfiguration for any installation. First,determine whether the bracket should bemounted on the left or right side of thespeaker (do not bolt the speaker to thebracket). It is best to mount the bracket onthe side away from the direction in whichthe speaker will be aimed. This ensuresthat the full sweep angle is available foraiming on that side and provides easieraccess to the sweep tightening bolt on thewall bracket (see step 3). For safey, makesure the mounting surface can supportmore than the speaker's weight! Useonly industry-accepted fasteners andmounting methods when mounting thebracket. Consult an expert if you are notsure. Read steps 2 and 3 before mountingthe speaker in step 4.

For standard vertical installation mountthe SAM™ bracket as shown in Figure 6.For horizontal mounting configurations,mounting the bracket on the bottom side(as in Figure 7) is easiest and safest, andallows the speaker to be mounted closer tothe ceiling.

Step 2: Select Voltage Tap (Models4.2t and 6.2t Only)Before mounting the speaker to the brack-et, select the proper voltage tap setting foryour installation. The voltage selectorswitch is located at the rear of the speakerbelow the input terminal panel.

The EVID™ 4.2t and 6.2t include a switchfor selecting the power taps. The EVID™3.2t has a single power tap.

EVID™ 3.2tA single (non-selectable) power tap rated at5W@70V and 10W@100V.

EVID™ 4.2tThe power taps are 30W, 15W and 7.5W atboth 70.7V and 100V, with a 3.7W tap for70.7V only.

EVID™ 6.2t:The power taps are 60W, 30W and 15W atboth 70.7V and 100V, with a 7.5W tap for70.7V only.

The taps for the models listed above areselected by a rotary switch on the backpanel. A guide on the back of each speakershows which switch positions to use for thepower settings at 70V and 100V.

Figure 8 below illustrates the settings forthe 4.2t and 6.2t

Step 3: Mount the Speaker to theSAM™ BracketAttach the speaker to the SAM™ bracketwith the socket head bolt, as shown inFigure 9.

Secure the speaker with the providedsecurity tool by tightening the two sockethead bolts as shown. After selecting theproper horizontal angle, secure the swingaxis as shown by tightening bolt A. Next,select the proper vertical angle with theaid of the angle markers as shown inFigure 10. Then secure the rotation axis bytightening bolt B.

Attach both logo caps as shown in Figure11 after tightening and securing the speaker.

Step 4: Wire the SpeakerConnect the wires to the speaker at theback terminal plate observing the polarityof the connections. The push-terminalsaccept banana connector plugs.

Step 5: Secure the Seismic TabConnection PointThe rear of the enclosure includes an eye-bolt for connection to a seismic restraint.Connect it to a properly rated hardware fit-ting that is securely installed independent-ly of the SAM™ bracket. Even if your localconstruction code does not require theinstallation of secondary support, its use ishighly recommended for further security.

Step 6: Test System OperationAfter all connections are made, test thecomplete system operation. Appendix C(page 14) contains a troubleshooting tableto assist in locating many speaker-relatedproblems.

Packing List (12.1 Subwoofer)Below is the list of parts included with theEVID™ 12.1 subwoofer. The parts are illus-trated in Figure 14.

Product Feature IdentificationThe 12.1 subwoofer comes with a dual-modemounting bracket that enables the unit tobe easily mounted at either a wall/wall (cor-ner) or on a wall/ceiling (midwall) junction.The included forged steel eyebolt providesthe installer a solid attachment point for asafety line. The 12.1 subwoofer may also besafely installed protruding just 2 3/4" downthrough a standard suspended ceiling grid.See installation instructions.

Step-by-Step Installationand Wiring (12.1 Subwoofer)

Step 1: Mount the BracketThe mounting bracket can be installed twoways (see Figures 17 and 18), allowing opti-mal configurations for installations. Leave1.5" of space between the bracket andthe ceiling when installing in a corner!

Attach the bracket to the wall with suit-able fasteners screwed into structural mem-bers in the wall. Remember: It is the in-staller's responsibility to insure that thestructure can safely support the load.

Step 2: Install the Safety LineUsing accepted safe rigging practices,secure one end of a suitable safety line (usecable, not chain, which will rattle) to astrong, secure point above the speaker, apoint that can withstand the shock of thefalling speaker. This is especially importantin public spaces constructed with light-gauge steel studs. Do not attach the safe-ty line to the bracket! The safety lineshould prevent the speaker from falling ifthe bracket tears loose from the wall.Secure the other end to the eyebolt that isfully threaded into the enclosure.

Step 3: Wire the SpeakerThe amplifier and satellite speakers arewired as shown in Figure 19. It is highlyadvisable to support the unit while theseconnections are being made. Connect allwires to the speaker at the back terminalplate observing proper polarity of the con-nections. The push-terminals accept strand-ed wire up to 14 gauge. When using twosatellites, wire the speakers directly intothe output terminals of the panel. Foursatellites may be connected either as twopairs directly to the output terminals orwith daisy-chain wiring as in Figure 20.

Step 4: Mount the Speaker to the BracketFirst remove the two Phillips-head screwson the rear of the enclosure. Use the sup-plied eyebolt to mount one mounting clip tothe top of the speaker as shown in Figure21. Check to make sure that the wiring con-nections to the amplifier and the satellitespeakers are correct and secure.

For corner mountingAttach the four rubber mounting feet to thefront side edges, and secure the safety line tothe eyebolt. Lift the enclosure up to the ceil-ing and center it back it into the corner untilit touches the bracket rungs, then carefullylower it so the top clip hooks over the toprung of the bracket (1). Insert one of the 3/8-16-thread Phillips-head screws through theremaining clip and, with the clip pointingup, thread the screw finger-tight into thelower mtg. hole on the enclosure (2, 3). Levelthe clip and tighten securely with a #3 right-angle Phillips screwdriver. Even though the

enclosure hangs from the top clip, alwaysinstall the lower one to secure against possi-ble disengagement of the top clip. Straightenthe EV® logo and press firmly at its center toseat it securely into its mounting hole.

For midwall mountingAttach the four rubber mounting feet insidethe corners on the side of the enclosure thatwill be against the wall and attach the safe-ty line to the eyebolt. Insert one of the 3/8-16-thread Phillips-head screws through theremaining clip and keep it within arm'sreach. Lift the enclosure up to the ceilingand bring its back into contact with thebracket rungs. Slide the enclosure sidewaysto engage the clip over one bracket rung (1)and, while holding it tight against bothrungs, insert the 3/8-16-thread screw withits clip into the remaining mounting hole sothe clip engages the remaining bracketrung (2, 3). Finger-tighten the screw andstraighten the clip. The enclosure may nowbe released. It will slide down the rungsuntil the four rubber feet are snug againstthe wall. Using a #3 right-angle Phillipsscrewdriver, securely tighten the secondPhillips-head screw. Gently rotate the EV®

logo a quarter turn and press firmly at itscenter to seat it securely into its mountinghole. See Figure 22 on p. 10.

Mounting through a suspended ceiling gridOn the rear of the enclosure install andtighten two 3/8-16-thread forged steel eye-bolts (one is included) with a 3/8" flat wash-er under each. Cut two pieces of ordinarydrop ceiling L angle (wall track) 23 3/4" longand screw them to the top and bottom of theenclosure with 3/4"-lomg sheet metalscrews, as shown in Figure 23. Connect allthe wires and suspend the enclosure, facedown, by the eyebolts in accordance withaccepted safe rigging practice. Adjust thelength of the rigging cables so the tips of theinstalled L angles just rest on the ceiling

cross-tees. This stabilizes the enclosure fromrocking. Trim the ceiling panel to fit thenew opening(s) and drop into place. It is theinstaller's responsibility to assure that thechosen rigging points are strong enough tosupport the load. Warning: Never try toinstall this speaker in a suspended ceil-ing without proper rigging support!

Floor MountingThe EVID™ 12.1 may be placed directly onthe floor in a corner or on its side along astraight wall by simply attaching the fourrubber mounting feet to the side that willsit on the floor.

Step 5: Test System OperationAfter all connections are made test thecomplete system operation. Appendix C onp. 14 contains a troubleshooting guide toassist in locating a variety of speakerrelated problems.

Safety Agency ComplianceThe EVID™ 12.1 bracket system has suc-cessfully passed EIA 636 at a safety factorof 8:1. The bracket system is intended tosupport the EVID™ 12.1 only. Do not use itfor any other purpose. Never set anythingon, or hang anything from, the EVID™ 12.1enclosure when using this bracket.

MaintenanceYour EVID™ system has been designedand manufactured to provide years ofdurability and reliable service. No routinemaintenance is necessary. Units may becleaned by wiping with a soft, damp cloth.Never use solvents or harsh cleaningagents of any kind.

Electro-Voice® products are guaranteedagainst malfunction due to defects in mate-rials or workmanship for a specified period,as noted in the individual product-linestatement(s) below, or in the individualproduct data sheet or owner's manual,beginning with the date of original pur-chase. Speakers and ElectronicsElectro-Voice® Speakers and SpeakerSystems are guaranteed against malfunc-tion due to defects in materials or work-manship for a period of five (5) years fromthe date of original purchase. The LimitedWarranty does not apply to burned voicecoils or malfunctions such as cone and/orcoil damage resulting from improperlydesigned enclosures. Installation ExamplesThe EVID™ Series is a product family withthe flexibility to fit the requirements ofmany different applications. Listed beloware some suggested combinations for sys-tems using the 12.1.• Rich, full-sounding low-level background

music and paging in a quiet restaurant,office, or retail space: two EVID™ 3.2s inparallel on each output of a 12.1.

• Moderate-level music and paging in asports bar/restaurant or upbeat retailspace: two EVID™ 4.2s in parallel oneach output of a 12.1.

• Higher-level foreground music in bass-heavy applications such as dance floors,amusement arcades, or loud bars: useone EVID™ 6.2 on each output of a 12.1.

EVID™ systems may be used together.For example, a large hotel might use eight3.2s and two 12.1s in the dining room,eight 4.2s and two 12.1s in the lounge, four6.2s with two 12.1s surrounding the dancefloor, 6.2s around the pool, 6.2s or 4.2swith or without 12.1s in the lobby, and 3.2sin the corridors.

Crossover Frequency andImpedanceThe EVID™ 12.1 is designed to be used as apassive subwoofer. No additional amplifiersor signal processors are required to achievefull benefit of the 12.1's performance. Thebuilt-in passive stereo crossover sends thelowest notes of both stereo channels to the12" dual-coil bass driver and reduces theamount of low frequencies sent to the satel-lite speakers. This allows them to play loud-er and cleaner while presenting a more even,amplifier-friendly impedance load than if allthe speakers were connected in parallel.

The EVID™ 12.1's crossover tunes a com-bination of electrical and acoustic character-istics to complement the response of thefull-range EVID™ models. The crossoverpoint is set electrically in the 160Hz rangewith a topology that enables the nominal

system impedance to be determined by thenumber of satellites per channel.

Using a Separate AmplifierChannel for the 12.1In certain specialized applications, it may bedesirable to drive the subwoofer with a sep-arate amplifier channel. In these applica-tions the active crossover point must be ator below 160Hz so as not to interfere withthe built-in passive crossover. Both sections(left and right inputs) must be connected inparallel (4 ohm system impedance) whenoperating as a mono device. No load resis-tors are necessary on the hi-pass outputs.

Characteristics of AllSubwoofersWhile subwoofers do radiate sound omnidi-rectionally (in all directions) and the soundis generally non-localizable (one can't hearexactly where it comes from), subwoofersound level still drops off the farther onemoves from the subwoofer. The highest out-put and best room loading are accomplishedwith the subwoofer mounted in a corner at athree-boundary junction (wall/wall/ceiling orwall/wall/floor, an arrangement also referredto as 1/8 space). Mounting at a two-boundaryjunction (wall/ceiling, or 1/4 space) producesthree dB less output, and mounting in themiddle of a room in the ceiling (1/2 space)reduces output still another three dB.

Subwoofers produce large amounts of long-wavelength low-frequency energy. Everyobject has its own resonant frequency, andlong wavelengths tend to excite large objects(like walls, floors, doors and ceiling panels).Anything loose in or on a ceiling or wall willbuzz or rattle as a subwoofer's level isincreased. Most of these can be isolated andfixed with small, strategically placed bits offoam tape. Others may require driving addi-tional nails or screws and perhaps somecaulking to dampen their sympathetic move-ment. Be aware that as bass levels increase,so does the likelihood of rattles and buzzes.

The 12.1 subwoofer is a painted woodenclosure which can easily be repainted.

Painting Process (3.2, 4.2, 6.2)The EVID™ 3.2, 4.2 and 6.2 are made ofhigh-impact ABS, which accepts a widevariety of paints.• Remove the grille and mask the baffle.• Clean the cabinet and grille by rubbing

the speaker with a lightly dampenedcloth. Do not, however, use abrasivessuch as sandpaper or steel wool. Neveruse gasoline, kerosene, acetone, MEK,paint thinner, harsh detergents, or otherchemicals, as these agents may causepermanent damage to the enclosure.

• After cleaning, apply latex or enamelpaint. Spraying is recommended

Painting the Grille• Painting the grille requires spray

painting. If the grille is rolled or brushpainted, the mesh may become cloggedwith paint and poor sound quality mayresult.

Painting Process (12.1 Subwoofer)• Remove the four screws securing the

front hatch and lift off the hatch panel.Carefully twist and lift off the EV® logoand set it aside.

• The foam grille blocks are held in placeby sharp pins protruding through thebaffle board. Note the relative positionof the foam and carefully lift the blocksoff the pins. Mask around the inputpanel with tape and tape a piece ofheavy paper over the woofer. It is notnecessary to remove any components.

• Clean the cabinet, bracket and clips byrubbing with a lightly dampened cloth.Do not use abrasives such as sandpaperor steel wool. Never use gasoline,kerosene, acetone, MEK, paint thinner,harsh detergents, or other chemicals, as

these agents may cause permanentdamage to the enclosure.

• After cleaning, apply two or more twothin coats of either latex or oil-basedpaint. Spraying is recommended, but abrush and small roller work very well.It is not necessary to paint all the wayup to the woofer. Only the visible sur-faces need to be painted: the hatch frontand side edges, the exposed enclosuresurfaces down to the hatch gaskets andabout halfway under where the foamblocks sit. Likewise, the back sides ofthe bracket and clips need not be paint-ed. The hatch screw heads may bepainted, if desired.

• When the paint is thoroughly dry, care-fully unmask everything. Replace thefoam blocks, pressing them gently downonto the sharp pins. Replace the hatchcover and tighten the four screws.Locate the small center hole, properlyorient the EV® logo, and press it firmlyinto place at its center to reseat it inthe mounting hole.

Problem Possible Cause(s) Action

1. No sound Amplifier Connect a known working test speaker to the amplifieroutputs. If there is no sound, check that all the elec-tronics are on, the signal routing is correct, the sourceis active, the volume is turned up, and so on. Correct/repair/replace as necessary. If there is sound, theproblem is in the wiring.

Wiring Verify that you have connected the correct wire pairs tothe amplifier. Play something at low level through the amplifier (for example, from a CD player or tuner).Connect the test speaker in parallel with the malfunc-tioning line. If the sound has gone or is very weak, the line has a short in it (possibly a severe scrape, pinch, or staple puncture). If the sound level is normal, the wire is open (possibly a cut wire or a missed connec-tion). Using the test speaker, move down the line and test each connection/junction until you find the problemand correct it. Observe proper polarity.

If you are using the 12.1 subwoofer, use the test speaker to verify that you have the inputs and outputs connected to the correct wires. If the subwoofer input panel is not correctly wired, there will be little or no sound. Observe proper polarity.

2. Poor low- Speakers wired When two speakers are connected out of polarityfrequency out-of-polarity (out of phase), the low frequencies will cancel each response other acoustically. Carefully observe the wire markings

or tracers on your speaker wires. Verify that the ampli-fier (+) terminal is connected to the red speaker termi-nals and the amplifier (–) terminal is connected to all the black speaker terminals.

Improperly wired Using a test speaker as described above, verify thatsubwoofer panel all amplifier and speaker wires are connected to their

proper terminals with the correct polarity. Reversing just one set of amplifier wires can cut out all bass output from the subwoofer.

3. Intermittent output Faulty connection Check all connections at amplifier and speakers to such as crackling ensure they are clean and tight. If the problem persists,or distortion it may be in the amplifier or wiring. See no. 1 above.

4. Constant noise Defective amplifier If the noise is present but no program material is such as buzzing, or other electronic playing, the likely cause is the signal chain in the elec-hissing, humming device tronics. Evaluate each component as necessary to iso-

late the problem.

Poor system Check and correct the system grounding, as required.grounding or ground loop
