Wish the cast of Aladdin good luck with its production of the pantomine

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and accounts for nearly 1 in 3 of all cancers. There has been an increase in the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer and in the UK,approximately 41,000 new breast cancers occur each year. Despite this increasing number, there hasbeen a 30% increase in patients surviving breast cancer. This is probably secondary to improvedbreast awareness, detection and screening programmes in addition to a rapid expansion in thenumber of patients receiving chemotherapy and other new exciting anti-cancer agents.

These changes in clinical practice have outstripped the ability of the National Health Service to providesuitable facilities where chemotherapy is delivered. The rapid expansion in the number of patientsreceiving chemotherapy has also occurred for many other cancers including lung and colorectal. Overthe last few years at University Hospital Aintree, chemotherapy has been administered in severaldifferent locations, in order to cope with the rising demand. None of the sites have been ideal andcurrently treatment is delivered in the Eye Clinic at Walton Hospital.

Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology (CCO), with the support of the Merseyside and Cheshire CancerNetwork (MCCN) are currently reviewing the strategy for improving chemotherapy facilities acrossMerseyside and Cheshire, to make facilities fit for purpose. CCO are considering designating andusing 4 major chemotherapy centres, one of which could be University Hospital Aintree. This wouldallow a greater de-centralisation of services from Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology, enabling deliveryof chemotherapy as close to the patient’s home as possible, avoiding unnecessary travel.

It is proposed that The Marina Dalglish Centre for Oncology would be a major refurbishment of anexisting build at University Hospital Aintree to provide the idealenvironment for patients to receive chemotherapy. The advice andsupport of the Merseyside and Cheshire Cancer Network and CCOwould ensure that this project would meet all current standards.

In addition to the provision of chemotherapy services, we would hopeto offer other supportive care including complimentary andhomeopathic treatments and practices. A designated drop in centre, information and support area would also be provided.

The Marina Dalglish Centre for Oncology would enable patients toreceive adjuvant therapies as would be fitting for the 21st century.

The proceeds from tonight’s performance of ‘Aladdin’ will go to the Marina Dalglish Breast Cancer Appeal

Director’s NotesWell, here we go again with a second ensemble production by the Creative Team of SaintJohn Plessington Catholic College. This time it is the turn of “Aladdin”, the popularpantomime to receive the Plessington treatment. I would like to take this opportunity towelcome the choirs of Saint Anne’s and Saint John’s Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils to the school.I would also like to thank our Year 7 choir for their involvement. They will be making asignificant creative and musical contribution to tonight’s festivities.Pantomime is fun. It is entertainment where, like the old holy days or holidays, the irreverent bard ofmisrule has his day. The fool becomes the king, and vice versa. Wise and witty comments are placedin the context of wild anarchic comedy. Nevertheless, the genre has its roots in the history of theItalian Commedia Dell Arte with its hero, heroine, buffoon and villain. Ultimately, good triumphsover evil.We hope that you thoroughly enjoy our evening of pure fun and entertainment, and that you leaveour new music and drama hall with a warm Christmas glow in you.

RehearsalsThe cast really seemed to enjoy the rehearsals. It was quite a change from working on “The Crucible”,which was a rather serious piece. This time the cast had a lot of fun working on the jokes in thescript. As you can see from the pictures, they had a fantastic time.

A note from Miss HorneThe chance of working with our feeder primary schools has been a challenge and a privilege. Theresponse we received from the pupils to take part was amazing. The pupils worked incredibly hardthroughout the rehearsals, and were extremely enthusiastic when singing. Their teachers were verysupportive, and I am sure they will be proud of their own pupils on the night. I hope that they enjoythe performance as much as we do, and I hope to work with these talented pupils again in the future.

I would like to thank Mr. Austin for all his hard work arranging much of the music in thispantomime, and rehearsing with pupils. I would also like to thank the musicians for playing, andtaking part with enthusiasm. Finally I would like to thank all of the choir members who have workedso hard and, I’m sure, will sing fantastically.Miss Horne
