TEL-ME-MOR – Benefits for TEL

2. TEL-ME-MOR project
3. Towards a European Digital Library
4. Challenges to tackle
Structure of presentation
Towards a European Digital Library
EU : TEL is seen as a good starting point for a European Digital Library (libraries, museums, archives, AV)
The European Library already has: Operational technological platform (portal) Based on common open standards for metadata &
access Firm cooperative organisational framework (CENL)
PROBLEM: A successful European Digital Library also needs 1. More partners (museums, archives, AV) (!)2. More digital content (!!)3. Multilingual search & retrieval facilities (!!!)
Ingredients for a succesful EDL
1. The European Library
2. TEL-ME-MOR project
3. Towards a European Digital Library
4. Challenges to tackle
Structure of presentation
Challenges to tackle for EDL1. More partners, esp. museums, archives, AV
Beginning of 2008 : 35 national libraries searchable via TEL 300+ collections, 50-100M records
TEL is already collaborating with DELOS, MICHAEL, MINERVA, BRICKS et al.
2. More digital content
(Only 5-10% of content in TEL are digital objects)
Make sure that access to existing digital content is as complete as possible
Digitisation – Centres of Competence
3. Multilingual search & retrieval facilities
Prototyping in TEL portal of MACS, MSAC, CrissCross + VIAF
Biggest challenge of them all !!
Summary Common and open standards for access and
interoperability are essential for EDL
CENL, TEL and TEL-ME-MOR are catalysts for the creation of EDL
Building a EDL is a much a political & social game as it is a technological
Collaboration is key!!
A true multilingual EDL is still distant
