Gathering and Welcome

Prelude

* Call to Worship We are vessels in the Master’s hands. We are no longer our own, but God’s. Lord, use us according to your good will. We yield all things to your pleasure and disposal. Thank you for ALL you have given us!

* Hymn UMH 64 “Holy, Holy, Holy”

Children’s Time Leah McGlynn

Offering

* Hymn Medley UMH 176 “Majesty, Worship His Majesty” (sing once) UMH 177 “He is Lord” (sing twice)

Prayer of Confession Lord, why do we fail to thank you? We do not see you at work in our lives or in our world. Our small minds cannot imagine that you are in everything, even in the seemingly empty. Forgive our lack of thanksgiving. Lord, give us new vision so that we can see our limitations, vulnerabilities, and weaknesses as the best opportunities for you to shine through the cracks of our lives. Expand our minds so that we might see you in all things and praise you; we pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Words of Assurance There is no shame in being out of answers and empty. Receive the Holy Spirit's infilling to become the vessels of grace that the Lord intended us to be. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Glory to God! Amen.

Pastoral Prayer and Lord’s Prayer

Special Music “How Can I Keep from Singing" Lowry Valentina Sorbera and Mike Williams

Scripture Reading 2 Kings 4:1-7

Sermon “Overflowing” Leah McGlynn, Deacon Candidate

A Covenant Prayer in the Wesleyan Tradition (UMH #607) I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed by thee or laid aside for thee. Exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O Glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, Let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.

* Hymn UMH 170 “O, How I Love Jesus” (vs. 1)

* Benediction May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace as we trust in him, so that we may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (from Romans 15:13)

* Benediction Response UMH 170 “O, How I Love Jesus” (vs. 3)

May I have the eyes to see this as a good world in need of restoration,

rather than a bad world and an obstacle to my personal peace and rest.

“Just . . .” Leah McGlynn, guest speaker

Cleaners! We are looking for volunteers to help clean, especially following the 8:30 a.m. service. The more we have, the faster it will go. We encourage you to volunteer for one service and worship during the other service. We estimate two cleaners per service, and up to five following 8:30. If you don’t want to sign up as a “cleaner,” simply stay around in the pews after everyone is dismissed, and you’ll get a solution to use for cleaning!

August 16: Pastor Brian is spending family time with his in-laws in North Carolina this week. In order to follow the same guidelines we have had to ask others to follow, he will be out of the pulpit Sunday August 16. Leah McGlynn, our deacon candidate, will be preaching those two weeks, which will also help her candidacy process.

We would love to be announcing that we are getting together to plan the 2020-2021 season, but until we get through this COVID-19 time, there is little to plan. We will keep you up to date if and when we have anything to report.

Thanks, Anne and Bill Bryan

Thank you to the Silent Angel who made a monetary donation to my family. It came at a perfect time and was so greatly appreciated.

We are sad to share that Darlene Hayden passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2020. No arrangement information is available at this time. You may share condolences with her sister, Debbie Palmer, at 13347 Packard Drive, Woodbridge, VA 22193.

Collecting School Supplies

Betty Knaub says that she has seen advertisements for school supplies on sale, and several people have asked her about them. So far, she has not been able to speak with anyone at the school, but she recommends that those who would like to get some school supplies while they are on sale should go ahead and purchase them. She says to please keep them at home until she knows what needs to be done. For those getting filler paper, get wide-ruled, not college-ruled. Other items that go quickly are glue sticks, pencils, erasers, scissors, tissues, and hand sanitizer. If schools are opened, children will not be allowed to share supplies, so boxes of 24 crayons will be also needed. Thank you in advance for your help!

Annual Pecan Sale

The United Methodist Women have ordered pecans again this year to support the United Methodist Mission at Wesley Community Service Center, according to Joyce Winston. The pecan company says that the freshest pecans will be available late August or early September. When received, the UMW will arrange a time for sale and pickup.
