Leading EDGE COMPUTING Vortex Data River Overcoming critical challenges of end-to-end IoT implementation Features Introduction Vortex Data River™ is an easily implemented solution enabling vendor-neutral ecosystem constituents to cooperate seamlessly. Translation among devices or between devices and applications leaves IoT architects free to implement best-in-class technologies and solve real-world problems. Vortex Data River™ is based on an industry-standard protocol with significant usage in mission-critical applications, where the secure and timely delivery of data is essential. The peer-to-peer system requires no centralized broker, thereby eliminating the possibility of single point-failure. Dynamic auto-discovery allows both data sources and recipients to start and stop dynamically at any time, such that, in the event of unforeseen outage of any part of the system, it is not necessary to reset the entire system to re-establish communication links. A published data topic can accommodate multiple simultaneous recipients with no loss of performance. Non-volatile data can be retained in fault-tolerant storage at the discretion of the user, to be made available for additional recipients as they come online. The Vortex Data River™ consistent data model defines every element in the system, allowing a hierarchy of Things to describe the whole system from a simple sensor up to a complex multi-machine system, for distribution to assets located worldwide. This Thing Model enables creation of a data-centric architecture suiting any business and any goal to derive value from the data, describing each object, its state, and its telemetry data stream. The Vortex Data River™ is implemented in the Vortex Edge™ software suite, which builds a set of deployable microservices to communicate with end-points, devices or applications and which publish and/or subscribe to data topics on the Vortex Data River™. Consistent data model simplifies IoT system architecture Broad ecosystem streamlines device-application transactions Dynamic auto-discovery of data sources and recipients Secure, scalable, fault-tolerant data connectivity Based on mature open-industry standard utilities, proven in mission-critical environments The Vortex Data River™ flows seamlessly through the entire IoT ecosystem (assets, places and people).

Vortex Data River ™ Overcoming critical challenges of end-to-end IoT implementation

Features

IntroductionVortex Data River™ is an easily implemented solution enabling vendor-neutral ecosystem constituents to cooperate seamlessly.

The Vortex Data River™ runs across the organisation, making data available at the edge in the OT domain, as well as in the Information Technology (IT) domain.

Although OT and IT domains have historically evolved separately, with differing connectivity profiles at both physical and protocol levels, the convergence necessary for success in IoT applications is made possible using the Vortex Data River™, also embedding security into the solution to allay concerns on both sides.

As each Thing Model is registered onto the Vortex Data River™, data recipients can subscribe to specific data and leverage it to increase knowledge of the Thing itself. As an example, published sensor data can be processed by a local analytics service, with higher level content remitted to to the Vortex Data River™. With both raw and enriched data now available, other services can use these sources as the basis for further processing, with only useful information from a high-volume data source for transmission to the Cloud, or processed locally to adjust performance of line elements and avoid shutdown. The data-centric nature of the Vortex Data River™ allows querying for exact information and integration with related data from multiple sources, very positively facilitating the building of microservices.

The Thing Model encodes metadata, state, and telemetry data into a single consistent model:

Things to be securely shared outside of the River

Whether desired state can be configured outside the River

IT’s permission to write to the OT River

Data source registers as a Thing with the River, including metadata, state, and telemetry This can also include sharing permissions

Data source updates state and produces telemetry data

Data source receives updates to its expected state that must be executed
