Today's concert, Sing Alleluia!, offers the congregation an opportunity to recognize the important

role sacred music has played in the history of worship. In so doing, we also take part in a continuing celebration of the role the Over the Mountain Festivals’ members play in their communities, singing in houses of worship throughout the greater Birmingham area. Our time together today has been designed to be free of speech, yet rich in words. As you will see, the texts of each piece presented by the choir are given as your guide through the program. As you follow them closely, you will see that you are given an uninterrupted musical journey through the church calendar, the single most unifying element of worship for members from a wide variety of faith perspectives. Please take a moment to turn off your electronic devices, then follow your printed guide carefully, making sure that you fully receive the gift of this musical calendar, and the opportunity to share its journey with those around you. Those of us who have worked to provide this program hope that it results in a community whose worship is reinvigorated because its musicians have been affirmed and challenged to present the finest sacred music in the worship of their congregations.

Sing Alleluia! Terre Johnson

Love Bade Me Welcome Love bade me welcome; yet my soul drew back, Music: Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) Guilty of dust and sin. Words: George Herbert (1593-1632) But quick-eyed Love, observing me grow slack Soloist: Zachary Palamara From my first entrance in, Drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning If I lack'd anything. 'A guest,' I answer'd, 'worthy to be here:' Love said, 'You shall be he.' 'I, the unkind, ungrateful? Ah, my dear, I cannot look on Thee.' Love took my hand and smiling did reply, 'Who made the eyes but I?' 'Truth, Lord; but I have marr'd them: let my shame Go where it doth deserve.' 'And know you not,' says Love, 'Who bore the blame?' 'My dear, then I will serve.' 'You must sit down,' says Love, And taste my meat:' So I did sit and eat.

Agnus Dei, from Requiem Sung in Latin, English Translation: Music: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Words: from the Mass Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

Christus Paradox You, Lord, are both Lamb and Shepherd. Music: PICARDY, Arr. Alfred Fedak You, Lord, are both prince and slave. Words: Sylvia Dunstan You, peacemaker and sword-bringer of the way you took and gave. You the everlasting instant; You, whom we both scorn and crave. Clothed in light upon the mountain, stripped of might upon the cross, shining in eternal glory, beggared by a soldier’s toss, You, the everlasting instant; You, who are both gift and cost. You, who walk each day beside us, sit in power at God’s side. You, who preach a way that’s narrow, have a love that reaches wide. You, the everlasting instant; You, who are our pilgrim guide. Worthy is our earthly Jesus! Worthy is our cosmic Christ! Worthy your defeat and victory. Worthy still your peace and strife. You, the everlasting instant; You, who are our death and life. Alleluia.

The Promise of Living, from The Tender Land The promise of living Music: Aaron Copland (1900-1990) with hope and thanksgiving Words: Erik Johns (1927-2001) Is born of our loving our friends and our labor.

The promise of growing with faith and with knowing Is born of our sharing our love with our neighbor.

The promise of living, the promise of growing Is born of our singing in joy and thanksgiving.

For many a year we’ve known these fields And known all the work that makes them yield, Are you ready to lend a hand? We’re ready to work, We’re ready to lend a hand. By working together We’ll bring in the harvest, the blessings of harvest.

We plant each row with seeds of grain, And Providence sends us the sun and the rain. By lending a hand, by lending an arm bring out Bring in from the land, bring out from the farm, The blessings of harvest, the blessings of harvest.

Give thanks there was sunshine, Give thanks there was rain, Give thanks we have hands to deliver the grain, O let us be joyful, O let us be grateful to the Lord for his blessing.

The promise of ending in right understanding /O let us sing our song, and let our song be heard. Is peace in our own hearts and peace with our neighbor. /Let’s sing our song with our hearts, and find a promise in that song.

The promise of living, the promise of growing The promise of ending is labor and sharing and loving.

We welcome our Festival Clinician

Dr. Terrence A. Johnson Dr. Terre Johnson holds degrees in choral music from Troy University, Auburn University, and Florida State University. He lives in Birmingham, Alabama, where he serves as Minister of Music for Vestavia Hills Baptist Church. He is also Visiting Professor of Choral Music at Judson College. He serves the American Choral Directors Association as National Chair for Music in Worship. While a student at Florida State University, Dr. Johnson served as rehearsal assistant and accompanist for visiting conductor Robert Shaw, under whose tutelage he developed his approach to the choral/orchestral repertoire. He developed these skills further when asked to teach both undergraduate and graduate advanced conducting courses after the sudden death of professor Clayton Krehbiel. Students from those classes now conduct in major posts in churches, schools and community choruses. Prior to coming to Vestavia Hills he was Conductor-in-Residence for Midamerica Productions in New York, and Music Director of the New Jersey Choral Society. He is the founder and music director of the Southeastern Chamber Orchestra, and has conducted concerts, rehearsals and workshops in twenty-three states and several countries. His Carnegie Hall debut in 1996 met with critical success, and in 2004 the New York Times lauded the "robust choral sound" his chorus produced in a concert production of Taneyev's Agamemnon, which featured soprano Angela Brown, and was narrated by Olympia Dukakis. In the summer of 2009 he served as Assistant Artistic Director for the International Haydn Festival in Vienna, where he conducted the Mozart Requiem, and in the summer of 2006 he conducted in the Sydney Opera House as part of the "Voices in the House Festival." His church choirs have performed in international festivals in Warsaw, Krakow, Coventry, and as part of the 1999 Easter Festival in Rome. In addition to the ten concerts he has conducted in Carnegie Hall, Dr. Johnson is called upon to prepare choruses for Maestro John Rutter, in advance of his concerts. In May of 2014, Dr. Johnson will conduct the premiere of his first major work for chorus and orchestra, Missa Femina, in a concert in Carnegie Hall. Terre Johnson's choral compositions are published by Morning Star Music Publishers, and his compositions have been recorded and performed by the St. Olaf Choir, the Baylor University Concert Choir, and in concerts of the American Choral Directors Association.
