• Investment in Research and Development is only a thirdof the UK rate

• 2/3rds of the 3 million population live in an area where theGDP is below 75% of the average for the European Union

The aim of Intellectual Property Wales is to provide Welsh SMEswith the knowledge and financial means to sustain and grow theirbusiness through the commercial use of IP assets

In Autumn 2003 our PATLIB Centreundertook a trade mark search of thetrading name for the 1,456 IP Walesmembership:
- 99 owned trade marks protectingtheir trading names and brands-125 owned trade marks protectingtheir trading name only- The remainder had no formal trademark protection with 265 membersalerted to the fact that their tradingname may be in breach of somebodyelse’s trade mark
