GATHERING Prelude

Welcome & Call to Worship

One: Come in from the night. All: It is a new day, and this is where love lives. One: Take off your jacket, let the weight fall off your shoulders; All: For here, you are known. Here, you are loved. One: Come in from the fear. All: We can do anything together. We can survive together. One: When the world unravels from under your feet—All: come into this space. All: When nothing around us seems the same— One: Come into this space. All: God is here. You are home. You will never be alone. One: Let us worship the God who weaves us together. Amen.

Prayer of Confession

One: Holy God, All: We have been angry because we see suffering and we don’t

understand. We have been skeptical because we know heartbreak that doesn’t seem fair. We have withheld love because sacrifice only feels real when it’s our own. Forgive us for forgetting that you created the heavens and the earth. Forgive us for withholding our pain from you. Forgive us for thinking that we know everything. When the world falls apart around us— When love unravels and life slowly fails— Draw us in. Show us grace; for you gave the wind its weight and you gave our bodies life. Forgive us for forgetting that. Amen.

Assurance of Forgiveness 1110

All: You know each of us by name, O God, and in your sight we have found favor, yet our minds cannot comprehend the vision of your glory or the vastness of your love. Grant that as we glimpse your greatness, reflected in your many gifts, we may always return to you the praise that is yours alone. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Scripture Lesson Job 28:12-28 (Lament & Loss after Everything Has a Fallen Apart)

One: A reading from the book of Job

12 “But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?

13 Mortals do not know the way to it, and it is not found in the land of the living.

14 The deep says, ‘It is not in me,’ and the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’

15 It cannot be gotten for gold, and silver cannot be weighed out as its price.

16 It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, in precious onyx or sapphire.

17 Gold and glass cannot equal it, nor can it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold.

18 No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; the price of wisdom is above pearls.

19 The chrysolite of Ethiopia cannot compare with it, nor can it be valued in pure gold.

20 “Where then does wisdom come from? And where is the place of understanding?

21 It is hidden from the eyes of all living, and concealed from the birds of the air.

22 Abaddon and Death say, ‘We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.’

23 “God understands the way to it, and he knows its place. 4

Page 6: Outdoor Worship & Worship-in-Place August 30, 2020...Forgive us for thinking that we know everything. When the world falls apart around us— When love unravels and life slowly fails—

24 For he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees everything under the heavens.

25 When he gave to the wind its weight, and apportioned out the waters by measure;

26 when he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the thunderbolt;

27 then he saw it and declared it; he established it, and searched it out.

28 And he said to humankind, ‘Truly, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.’”

One: Word of God, word of life! All: Thanks be to God!

Apostles’ Creed

All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. 6

Page 8: Outdoor Worship & Worship-in-Place August 30, 2020...Forgive us for thinking that we know everything. When the world falls apart around us— When love unravels and life slowly fails—

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the Community

One: Loving and healing God, we turn to you in prayer, confident that you are with us and with all people in every moment. O God of wisdom, as schools and colleges have begun a new school year, help us pass on to them the wisdom that has been given down to us from the generations before us. Help our children as they learn their daily lessons to listen and learn. Help their teachers have the patience and knowledge to teach well. Help them as they learn life’s lessons of dealing with other people around them. Help us as we guide them through those lessons. We ask for your wisdom to discern your ways and path for our own lives. We ask for your wisdom to discern how to deal with others we meet, live with, work with, shop with, drive our roads, with, wait in line with, eat with and be with daily. We ask for your wisdom in the difficult situations we may have to deal with as we go through life. We ask for your wisdom when voting in the upcoming elections. We ask for your wisdom in dealing with injustices in our world.

We ask for wisdom for our leaders in our world, our countries, our states, and our communities. We ask for wisdom for our church leaders, worldwide and local. We ask for wisdom for pastors, deacons, and bishops as they preach your word, inspire, lead and grow us as disciples. We ask for your wisdom as we reach out to those in need in our communities and in our world. We ask for wisdom as we minister to those who are homebound and in nursing homes. We ask for your wisdom as we minister to those in hospitals, in recovery and rehab. We ask for your wisdom that not only enlightens us but transforms us and guides us in our daily walk with you. Amen.

MEAl Proclamation of Christ's Peace

One: The peace of Christ is with you always! All: And also with you.

Offertory Prayer

One: Let us pray... All: Almighty God, who made us who we are, we offer all of

ourselves to You. Take our talents, our energy and our joy, and use us to share your love. Take our mistakes, our regrets and our pain, and use us to bring Your healing. Magnify the gifts we will offer before You today, to spread your peace in the world. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Page 10: Outdoor Worship & Worship-in-Place August 30, 2020...Forgive us for thinking that we know everything. When the world falls apart around us— When love unravels and life slowly fails—

It is indeed right to give you our thanks and praise, O God, for, in an everlasting covenant, you have promised to be our God through all generations. You called into existence things that did not exist: the universe and all that inhabits it. From Abraham and Sarah you brought forth nations, calling them to walk before you in the righteousness that comes from faith.

In your Son, Jesus, you showed your compassion for the afflicted and taught us that real life is found by those who lose their life for your sake and for your gospel. He was rejected by the religious leaders, and killed, but three days later, you raised him from the dead as Lord. Now you justify all who put their faith in you, through him, counting it to us as righteousness, and promising us the full riches of your grace when Christ comes in glory.

Therefore we join our praises with countless men and women before us, disciples and apostles, saints and martyrs, acclaiming your power in goodness and your might in compassion, as we sing:

Sanctus “Holy” (Haugen, Now the Feast and Celebration)

Eucharistic Prayer

One: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

The Lord’s Prayer

All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Meal Is Shared

One: For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

(For the bread) “This is the body of Christ, broken for you.” (For the juice) “This is the blood of Christ, shed for you.”

Special Music

Table Blessing

One: The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. All: Amen.

Prayer after Communion

One: Let us pray together... All: Lord Jesus Christ, as we have proclaimed your death by eating

this bread and drinking this cup, help us to wait for you, to wish for you, and to watch for you, so that when you come again you will find us ready. For you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen
