It was a Bible translation by Johnston Lykins in the Potawatomie language. It was one of the first books published in that Native language. Lykins, as you know, founded our church along with his second wife, Mattie, and his daughter from his first marriage to Delilah McCoy, Julia. Delilah and Johnston had moved from the Shawnee Baptist Mission (which they founded) to begin the Potawatomie Baptist Mission just outside Topeka. Lykins was a remarkable young man, having joined McCoy’s Indian mission work in Indiana as an unbeliever. The story of his conversion, an encounter with the Holy Spirit, was a moment of trans- formation. Obviously he was greatly influenced by Isaac McCoy, his mentor in faith. The influence was so great that Lykins felt the need to leave the mission in order to discover his own spiritual walk. But while apart, he experienced the profound and undeniable call of God and he made his way back to McCoy. He and McCoy’s daughter married a few years later. A lot of missionaries found McCoy to be a challenging colleague. He was strong-willed and not giv- en to compromise. But not Lykins, for they developed a close father-son relationship. McCoy is called the Father of the Indian Territories and he had more to do with the Indian tribes in the East relocating than any other person. He was called to Washington DC by three presidents of the USA, by several cabinet officers and by leaders of Congress to advise them on an admittedly difficult situ- ation. The Indians could not thrive in their native lifestyles while white civilization encroached upon them. Something had to be done and McCoy came to the conclusion that the only satisfactory out- come was to urge the tribes to relocate to new tribal areas assigned to them in the territories of Kansas and Oklahoma. McCoy tried everything possible to keep the tribes from being forced to relo- cate West, and he was successful with every tribe except the Cherokees, and we know of their Trail of Tears, and one branch of the Potawatomie, and their Trail of Death across Illinois and northern Missouri. McCoy was asked by two US Presidents to survey the plains states and assign areas to the incoming tribes. He also had to work with the Osage and Kansa Indians so they would not grow hostile over the arrival of the Eastern tribes, far outnumbering the indigenous tribes. In all this, he was successful. Lykins was a profound thinker and innovator. Before medical doctors received much formal training, he picked up informal training and became the federally appointed doctor to the Potawatomie tribe near Topeka. He took the unusual step of vaccinating the tribe against smallpox, which saved many

IT’S A LONG AND WONDERFUL LINE

This past week I received a copy of a book entitled, “The Gospel of Matthew and the Acts of the Apostles” by Johnston Lykins. It was a Bible translation by Johnston Lykins in the Potawatomie language. It was one of the first books published in that Native language. One of Lykins’ mission-ary colleagues invented a way to write several tribal languages which heretofore had not been writ-ten down – they were only oral languages. It’s remarkable that a person not trained as a biblical or linguistic scholar could translate two books of the Bible!

The Kansas Historical Society offices are on the grounds of this Mission and the building where a trade school operated still stands.

Lykins was a remarkable young man, having joined McCoy’s Indian mission work in Indiana as an unbeliever. The story of his conversion, an encounter with the Holy Spirit, was a moment of trans-formation.

He was strong-willed and not giv-en to compromise. But not Lykins, for they developed a close father-son relationship. McCoy is called the Father of the Indian Territories and he had more to do with the Indian tribes in the East relocating than any other person. He was called to Washington DC by three presidents of the USA, by several cabinet officers and by leaders of Congress to advise them on an admittedly difficult situ-ation. The Indians could not thrive in their native lifestyles while white civilization encroached upon them. Something had to be done and McCoy came to the conclusion that the only satisfactory out-come was to urge the tribes to relocate to new tribal areas assigned to them in the territories of Kansas and Oklahoma. McCoy tried everything possible to keep the tribes from being forced to relo-cate West, and he was successful with every tribe except the Cherokees, and we know of their Trail of Tears, and one branch of the Potawatomie, and their Trail of Death across Illinois and northern Missouri.

He took the unusual step of vaccinating the tribe against smallpox, which saved many

lives. He was ordained to Gospel ministry by McCoy.

I’m confident that Lykins had a great deal to do with attracting the President of William Jewell College, Rev. R.S. Thomas, to come from Liberty to Kansas City to serve as our first pastor. Thomas was a brilliant educator and had served as a professor at University of Missouri before serving as Jewell’s first president. Thomas purchased a lot adjacent to the home of Isaac and Christiana McCoy and built a house there. This is on the site of today’s St. Luke’s Plaza Hospital.

We have had a long line of pastors – I’m the 26th. And those pastors have nearly all been fine scholars, highly educated, progressive in outlook, and engaged with our city. Johnston Lykins never served as a pastor of our church, though I can’t imagine that he didn’t do pulpit supply from time to time. Very little research has been done on Lykins apart from his role with McCoy. It’s a real interest of mine which I hope to pursue.

When the pastors of our church are listed, Johnston Lykins should be listed at the top. He began a long line of distinguished pastors and servants of Jesus Christ who have served our church and our city in such notable ways. I’m humbled to continue the line. - Stephen Jones

Our next planning meeting will be held after church on Sunday, Oct. 4. We need LOTS of volunteers!! We have all the lighting, costumes, and supplies from prior years. We have secured live animals. We need 1-2 persons to help coordinate the costumes.

Board of Deacons would like to remind you the first Sunday of the month is Communion Sunday. Please consider the Deacon fund, when giving. This fund is used to help folks in need.

Trustees Request Recently we had to remove a dead oak tree on the west side of the sanctuary. Would anyone want to donate a oak tree to replace it? If so please contact Lloyd Brown or

We Need your Input Deacons would like to survey the congregation: Do you prefer a Christmas Eve Candlelight

Service at 5:00 pm? or 7:00 pm? Please mark the green sheet, call or email the church office at [email protected] with

McCoy Walk

Have you walked the McCoy Prayer Walk? The JAMS class installed the walk and we’ll leave it up until winter. Many people have commented on the effectiveness of the nine plaques along the trail as they tell the story of Isaac and Christiana McCoy and their family, and offer spiritual in-sights and a prayer. A few parts of the trail are on an incline.

Dinners Out – a great success!

We had four “Dinners Out” this summer, to a German restaurant in Paola, KS; to a BBQ restaurant in Hillsdale, KS; to a restaurant in Weston, MO; and a lunch at Vivilore Restaurant in Englewood. We had a wonderful response and a wonderful time each outing. Deacons are planning to repeat the series beginning next Summer. If you have ideas for a nice restaurant with a short drive in the wider region, please let John Barton or Stephen Jones know.
