I imagine a great many of you have at least heard of Gary Chapman’s book, The Five
Love Languages. If you haven’t read it or studied the principles found within it, at some
point, I highly recommend it for any couple. The principles are biblically sound and
exceedingly beneficial to any marriage. But did you know that Chapman has also written
a book of the same premise which is focused on loving your children? This work, entitled The 5 Love
Languages of Children, takes essentially the same principles and applies them to the parent/child
relationship. Here is an excerpt from the book:
By speaking your child’s own love language, you can fill his “emotional tank” with love. When your
child feels loved, he is much easier to discipline and train than when his “emotional tank” is running
near empty.
Every child has an emotional tank, a place of emotional strength that can fuel him through the
challenging days of childhood and adolescence. Just as cars are powered by reserves in the gas
tank, our children are fueled from their emotional tanks. We must fill our children’s
emotional tank for them to operate as they should and reach their potential.
But with what do we fill these tanks? Love, of course, but love of a particular kind
that will enable our children to grow and function properly.
The 5 Love Languages of Children by Gary Chapman, p17
Loving children is a spiritual task, a significant responsibility, and a sure blessing. It is hard to
underestimate the importance of doing so well when we read Mark 9:36-37 which says, “36
He took a little
child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, 37
“Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me
but the one who sent me.”
May it be that we, as followers of Christ, live in his example. May it be that we love and cherish the
children God has placed in our lives, those who bear our name as well as those who don’t. May we
“welcome” these little children into our hearts, into our homes, and into our church in Jesus’ name, for in
doing so we welcome God!
“IT IS FINISHED” A multi-generational musical for Easter
If you love the Lord and love to sing we’d like to
invite you to come be a part of a multi-generational
choir under the direction of Deborah Lockey that will be
presenting the Easter musical, “It Is Finished” by Russell
Mauldin and Sue Smith on Palm Sunday, March 29.
This easy-to-sing but beautiful work presents the
story of redemption and the events that happened
that holy week as Jesus completed redemption’s plan
and declared, “It is finished!” There are two times you can
join us for rehearsal – Thursday mornings at 10:30am or Sunday evenings at
5pm. Our youth and senior adults have already begun work and are looking
for some other folks of any age, 6th grade and up, to come join us!
FBC Quarterly Business Conference

to be discussed and/or presented, there will

committees of the church as recommended by
the Nominating Committee and a presentation
by the Constitution and By-Laws Committee.

Dine In / Take Out
Sunday, February 8—11:30am
It’s ski trip time! Seventeen youth and four adults will be headed to the slopes at Winterplace on February 14-16 for two nights and a full day of skiing. Please pray for our youth as they travel, ski, and worship together.
Our L.I.F.T. time is changing! Instead of meeting before school this year we’re going to try meeting after school on Wednesdays at Chick-fil-A, at 3:30pm. We hope to catch our youth when they are more awake and give them an opportunity to bring their friends with them. During this time (after getting food, of course!)
we’ll share what’s going on in our lives and prayer requests we have, do a brief Bible study (10 min.) then pray together before heading home around 4:15pm. Our vision is that more students will be able to participate and that we will begin to build relationships with the friends they bring, all the while “Living In Fellowship Together”! So students, come join us at Chick-fil-A for a midweek LIFT!
How do you spell excitement? L-O-C-K-I-N! We’re having one on Friday, March 20 so mark it on your calendar. We’ll start around 5:30pm and end on Saturday morning at 7am. There will be free pizza, games, activities, worship, Hide ‘n’ Seek, a movie, and hopefully a little bit of sleep. Bring a snack to share, a 2-liter soda and friends!
Our Joy Club will meet this month on Tuesday,
February 24 at 10:45am in the conference
room and will feature Jane Gordan, attorney,
speaking on estate planning. I encourage our
median-age adults to join us as this is an area
that really affects us as we begin to help care for
our parents. A luncheon will follow in the FLC,
an enjoyable time of fellowship around the table.
We have added some folks to our planning
team and are excited about putting together
some day and overnight trips for 2015. The
three overnight trips are to Washington in the
spring, Charlotte & the Billy Graham Library
and Transportation Museum in September, and
a Coastal Retreat for Senior Adults at Caswell
this fall. Craig Everett is working on plans for
the Washington Trip scheduled for the week of
April 27. As soon as he gets that package put
together we will give you details and cost for
the trip. Please pray for our team as we seek
God’s vision for our Senior Adult Ministry.
And if you love working with senior adults
come be a part of our team!

HELP NEEDED
Lunches for Habitat for Humanity Workers
Our church has committed to providing the Habitat for Humanity workers with lunch on the fourth Tuesday of every month. The Missions Council is asking Sunday School Classes to take one month and prepare these lunches on that Tuesday. The lunch consists of 25-30 meat sandwiches, bags of chips, cookies (homemade or purchased), 2-3 gallons of tea and paper products (plates, cups, &
napkins). If your class is unable to prepare lunches, then a donation would be appreciated. The cost for these lunches can run between $60-$65. Lunches are delivered to the Habitat office on Hwy 70 near the Flea Market around 10:30am. If your class is able to prepare the lunches but not to deliver them, then the Missions Council has someone who can take the food. If you or your group is willing to prepare and deliver these lunches or if you or your group would like to make a monetary donation to purchase lunch products, please contact Betty Morgan at 726-4542.

Dear Church Family, Thank you all for the many expressions of concern, telephone calls, visits, cards, etc. during Harry’s eye surgery. He is doing fine and should be finished with appointments by January 7th.
God’s blessings on all of you, Ernestine & Harry Conway
Dear Church Family, I want to thank you for all you did for me during my illness and surgery; the flowers, cards, visits, meals, and especially your prayers were greatly appreciated. I’m slowly improving. May God richly bless you in 2015.
In His love, Betty Clonts

MEMORIAL & HONORARIUM G IFTS DECEMBER 2014
Our children are the future of the world. The type of adults they will become will depend upon what they are taught as children – both through direct teaching and by example. We, as Christians, have a responsibility to teach children everywhere about the love of Jesus and to give them hope. Vacation Bible School is one way to do this. Bible Blast to the Past will take the children on an amazing time-travel journey to experience stories that show the INCREDIBLE, FAITHFUL, INVINCIBLE, UNCONDITIONAL, and REAL love of God. Children will know they can count on God’s love because God IS love (1 John 4:16)! Children’s lives will be changed, and they will be inspired to courageously change lives around them. As you reflect back over your life, do you remember those special people who gave their time to work with you when you were a child? We all live very busy lives and wish we could have more hours in a day. God knows that. However, He wants us to put His work first and then He will provide for everything else to fall into place. Living by example is one of the greatest ways to teach others about Christ. When you volunteer to help in VBS, you are showing the children that Christ is a priority in your life and that you care about the future of their lives.
Are you willing to help teach our children? They need YOU!
We need several department directors and workers as well as general workers. Pray for God to show you how He wants to use you to teach our children. We were all children once and many adults took their time to teach us. Now it is our turn to teach the children. We can not let our children down by not being there for them. Please contact me and let me know where you would like to help in Vacation Bible School.
“Here am I, Lord…send me.”
Love, Diane Poag

Church family –we need your help! As you clean up and clean out from the holidays, please put your un-wanted items aside, because on March 7th we will be having a church-wide yard sale to
benefit those traveling to Brazil.
We will be collecting the following items: Baby items, bedding, blankets, books, bookcases, cabinets, clean-ing tools, clothes (gently used), collectibles, crafts and craft items, cups, curtains, DVD’s, desks, dinnerware, filing cabinets, gardening & lawn tools, glasses, hand tools, household items, furniture (sofas, chairs, & ta-bles), housewares, jewelry, kitchen items, knick-knacks, lamps, linens, luggage. music CD’s, pictures, power tools, purses, rugs, silk flowers, small appliances, tools, towels, toys (indoor & outdoor) ….and much more. We will not be accepting: Computer items, printers, TV’s or shoes.
Please be mindful of those working the yard sale and designate the size of clothes in each bag/box. It makes it much easier for those that are sorting the clothing to get the task at hand accomplished in a timely manner. Also if you happen to have extra hangers you want to discard, please feel free to send those along with your clothes. Also if you have paper bags from shopping or the grocery store, we would be happy to have those to use when people purchase items.
*Rule of thumb – if you have not used it in 5 years, more than likely you never will… why not donate it to a worthy cause that will send missionaries to a foreign country to spread the love of Jesus Christ!
If you need help moving items or getting them to the church, please feel free to contact Amy Nelson at 241-1402. If you are interested in helping with the yard sale, please feel free to let the office or Amy know. Many hands make for light work!
PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE ITEMS IN THE FLC UNTIL MARCH 2. Upward Basketball practices and games are going on through March 1.
A pod will be made available for you to put your donated items in— around middle of February.
Call the church office if you need to bring items before pod is delivered.

When we think of grief, we usually think of losing a loved one in
death. But there are many reasons to cause severe grief such as
divorce, loss of a job, financial loss, etc. In our group at the present
time there is one or more that are suffering for these reasons.
Everyone grieves differently, but they don't have to go through it
alone. God works miracles, if we just let Him.
This ministry is led by volunteers that have "walked the walk" and
understand what you are experiencing and want to offer you comfort
and encouragement during this difficult time. Besides sharing our
grief together, each week we watch a video featuring leading
authors, counselors, and pastors with years of expertise in grief
recovery.
There is no cost for the course except for a $15.00 fee for a
workbook which assists you with note-taking, journaling and grief
study. If you or someone you know is suffering the agony of
grief, please come join us. This ministry is designed so that a person
may start at any time.
