W isdom Horse’s Lynn Baskfield and Ann Romberg are both certified life and business coaches who hold masters degrees from universities in the US and share a lifelong passion for coaching people. So it was a natural next step for them to join forces to develop a training program for aspiring professionals, which combines a love of learning, coaching and horses. The results was the creation of a year- long, individualized training program, based on an adult learning model, that has proven to be effective at many institutions of higher learning including Princeton University in the US. In an Australian first, Lynn and Ann are now working in partnership with Emily McVeigh of Equine Learning Experiences Australia (ELEA) to roll out a 13-month Wisdom Horse equine guided coaching apprenticeship for aspiring professionals right here in Australia. Starting in March of 2015, the course will be presented to participants via three ‘face to face’ intensives during the year, as well as via distance education delivery. In addition to the coaching component taught by Paula Hemming, a professional coach trainer, there is an in depth business development component that answers the question: How do I turn the skills I have developed into a viable business? Well- tested materials, procedures, and protocols are part of the package so that those who are starting a new business or taking an existing business to the next level don’t have to reinvent the wheel. There are four areas of competency required for becoming a qualified equine guided coach through the Wisdom Horse program: horse skills, coaching skills, horse/human interaction skills and business development skills. The apprenticeship offers development in all these areas by building on any existing professional training and horse experience the apprentice come in with and creating new learning opportunities in the competencies he or she needs to develop. Some people wonder what coaching is and how it differs from therapy. The primary difference is that coaching assumes that the client is creative, resourceful and whole, and that there is nothing to fix, whereas therapy is remedial. The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. Another way to say it is that a coach helps clients get to the heart of what matters to them and to take steps toward fulfilling the dreams and goals that have been waiting for a long time to come front and center. According to a recent ICF survey, there are over 30,000 professional coaches practicing all over the world. Bringing horses into the mix deepens the learning and accelerates the life-enriching results good coaching makes possible. Want to know more?
