Pastor’s Message
Mother's Day Shines Again
Before all these mechanical safety devices, some of us no doubt grew up with a
different kind of child-restraint system. Judith Viorst reminded me of this when she wrote: "This year I received a Mother's Day card that pictured a mother driving a car, her son in the
passenger seat and her outstretched arm protectively flung across his chest. I've heard a great deal from my sons about my overprotective tendencies but I think that this card's message said it best. The message said, 'To Mom, the original seat belt.' "
A mom's protective reach has always been the saving seat belt for her family. But this seat belt takes different forms in different families. · For some mom offered the seat belt of continuous presence. · At the door when they trudged off to school. · Welcoming them back when they flew in the door. · Putting every meal on the table. · Shouting encouragement at every game.
For some, mom offered the seat belt of role model. · A mom who always worked incredibly hard at her job, her church, her tennis, her family. · A mom who put everything she had into all the things she did, regardless of how important, or how trivial.
For some, mom offered the seat belt of stability. A "no fear" mom raising "no fear" kids.
Or for some, mom offered a seat belt of gentleness. A spirit of love, forgiveness, tenderness, always accessible, always welcoming. Arms that wrapped around to provide a time-out, decompression space.
Whether your mom was a "Rock of Gibraltar"-type, or a "Balm in Gilead"-type, she helped create who you are and how you respond to the world. My kids, growing up with a preacher-mom, got "Momilies" as well as homilies. But as author Hester Mundis noted, "There's no such thing as a nonworking mother." As Michelangelo's Pieta illustrates with such heart-breaking poignancy, even Jesus returned to the arms of his mother.
The busiest day of the year at car washes? The Saturday before Mother's Day. What mom thinks still matters. The most successful and adored mothers have raised their children to be disciples of Jesus' love.
On Mother's Day, Jesus' love doesn't take a day off. It rejoices every day to have yet another chance to show itself to everyone.

loves MOM!
She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

Principal’s Message
With the school year just about over, May proves to be a very exciting month. We start the month off with National Day of Prayer. All of the blankets made by Pro-ject Linus will be on display at chapel. Thank you Martha Bauman! Right on the heels of National Day of Prayer, Riviera Hall will host its annual Spring Gala, A Night in the Piazza. Two days after the Gala comes the Terra Nova 3 testing week, May 5 through May 9, and if testing is not enough this month, we threw in our Hello 5th grade, Goodbye 8th grade dance on Friday, May 9. This is always an emotional evening with the 5th graders being very nervous, in fact, they are almost as nervous as their parents about going to their first “BIG” dance and the 8th graders being so sad be-cause this will be their last dance at RHLS.
As this month moves forward, we will hold our annual Open House and Hands on Art Show on Thursday, May 15 at 5:00 PM. This is an evening for parents and friends to visit classrooms to see examples of the many happenings that have taken place throughout the school year. However, this year our TK through fifth grades will be performing their Spring Concert right before Open House, at 5pm. Once again, you, our RLC family, are welcome to join us at the concert and Open House. We wrap up the merry month of May with Coach King and Mrs. Nollan, 7 brave par-ent chaperones and the eighth graders leaving on a new adventure. This year we will leave LAX on May 23 to fly to Italy and Salzburg, Austria for ten days. We will visit Rome, Pompeii, Florence, Bolzano, and Salzburg. We know that this trip will enrich the middle school learning experience as well as the lives of our students. Please keep the students and their chaperones in your prayers.
However, the 8th graders are not the only travelers in the merry month of May at RHLS. Our Fabulous Fifth Graders will be spending four fantastic (did you pick up on the alliteration) days at Thousand Pines Camp in Crestline. Thousand Pines is a camp where teamwork is developed. In addition to these two wonderful trips, our fourth graders will be traveling through time as they experience “Walk thru Califor-nia” and our fifth graders will go way back to experience life in the American Revo-lution with “walk thru the Revolution.” May is definitely a beautiful month; one filled with many exciting activities.
Blessings, Phyllis Nollan, principal
