A Pastoral Letter to the United Methodist Church from the President of the Council of Bishops

March 1, 2019

Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are

any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anoint-

ing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them

up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and

pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.

(James 5:13-16 NRSV)

To the Faithful Disciples of Jesus Christ who are the People of the United Methodist Church,

I read this passage of Scripture on our Day of Prayer, in St. Louis. I then reflected on these

words with the Council of Bishops on the day after the Special Session of the General Confer-

ence, and I share them with you. In a time of division and challenge, with “fighting and fears,

within, without”, we are in need of healing. The healing ministry of Jesus takes pain and suf-

fering seriously. The scripture calls for the elders of the church to pray and anoint. In the an-

cient spiritual traditions, anointing is about setting apart and healing, receiving power and

gaining courage.

Every church I have known in my life has had spiritual elders, mature spiritual leaders who

care for the body, that is the people God has called together in a place. I pray in this moment

for mature spiritual leadership among the clergy and laity of our global church. I pray that we

will move toward the pain and grief, and especially among our members in the LGBTQ com-

munity.

James does not call us to identify the sins of one another. He calls us to confess our sins to

one another, and to pray for one another, so that we may be healed. Our mutual prayer and

confession is for a larger purpose: our healing. And our healing is for an even greater pur-

pose: that we might be "repairers of the breach” (Isaiah 58:12).

Through the power of the cross and the flame of the Holy Spirit, God demonstrates his love for

all. May we be a means of grace to one another in these days.

The Peace of the Lord,

+Kenneth H. Carter, Jr. President,

Council of Bishops The United Methodist Church

YOUTH UPDATE APRIL 2019

The youth group's Sustainability and Creation Care Fundraiser was a huge success. We raised over $900 for youth missions work at Davis Street UMC! We are so grateful for the generosity of each and everyone of our members. In addition to hosting our March Luncheon and supporting the Creation Care Sunday, our UNITED Youth Program attended Winter Jam, a concert series in Raleigh, North Carolina. Though we are a small ministry. we are thriving and the Davis Street Youth program is steadily growing over time.

To God Be The Glory!

EASTER POTTED PLANTS

The sanctuary will again be decorated on Easter Sunday morning with potted plants on the window sills, the altar table and possibly the altar rail. Anyone who would like to provide a pot of azaleas, buttercups, tulips, hydrangeas, Easter lilies or other blooming spring flowers from your yard should bring them to the church narthex on Saturday, April 20 or on Easter before Sunday School. You may take these back home with you after the Easter service or why not share them with one of our shut-ins? Thanks in advance for your help in this project.

LIVING CROSS

In keeping with our tradition at Davis Street, we will be decorating a “living cross” on Easter Sunday, April 21st. The cross is fashioned from a Christmas tree trunk covered with chicken wire and adorned with fresh flowers. Please bring any flowers you have blooming in your yard or you can buy some beautiful blooms at the grocery stores or retail stores. Fresh flowers should be bought early (before 9:30 am) on Easter Sunday so that a group can decorate the cross during Sunday School and have it ready for the eleven o’clock worship service. As usu-al, thank you for all your help!

CHOIR NEWS

Calling all tenors and basses! Our sanctuary choir is growing! With the growth we are experiencing in the sopranos and altos, we need more tenors and basses for the balance. Thanks for keeping your ears open for singers. Kitty Anderson

THE CARING PEOPLE MINISTRY

The Caring People ministry for single moms continues to meet each Thursday from 6:00-7:30.

We eat dinner and then have Bible study and sharing time. Women from our church provide support for the moms. We now have three moms who are there every week and some who have visited. If you know of a single mom of any age who needs a group of caring friends who understand what it’s like to be raising children by herself, please invite her to join us. We also need volunteers to help with meals. To volunteer, or for more information, contact Jane Bran-nock (336-339-3584) or Nancy Webster ( 615-260-4807)

Birthday Bash May 2

The new ministry for adults 55+ will kick off May 2 at 11:30 am in the Fellowship Hall with a Birthday party and lunch to celebrate everyone’s birthday. Come enjoy lunch, get to know each other better, and enjoy cake! During our time together, we will also share more of our plans for the coming months.

THANK YOU DAVIS ST. FAMILY

I want to thank each and everyone of you for your thoughts, cards and prayers during my stroke and continued recuperation. Although I've tried to continue my daily life, I have to ad-mit it's slowed me down a bit.

Words cannot express how much my church family means to me. Know I love and care for you all. Thank you, again, for your continued prayers.

Peace,

Cyndy Jenkins

March 12, 2019 Throughout my life, DSUMC has always been supportive. Words cannot adequately express our family’s appreciation for your prayers, food, flowers, phone calls, cards, and love in our loss of Richard. He so enjoyed your visits, and all of your prayers with him. Thank you! Dianne W. Davis

Please tell our church family that we say THANK YOU,THANK YOU for our surprise of

beautiful red roses and the daily reading book when we got home from a doctor appoint-

ment. What a huge surprise that was and it truly warmed our hearts . Thank you for think-

ing of us and we pray that God be with all of you each day and keep you close to

Him. Don’s not doing well at all, waiting to hear from advance nurse what his labs said

yesterday and go from there... Thank you again for that heart warming surprise.

Dear Rev. DeJesus:

This may sound corny but I’m going to tell you anyway. We have a tradition in the office.

Every day at 1:30, we ring a bell once for each gift that has come in during the past 24

hours. We do this for a couple of reasons. The first is simply thankfulness. Our tradition is

that whoever hears the bell pauses for a moment of gratitude. Today we will ring the bell

for Davis St. and everyone who hears it will pause to whisper a prayer of gratitude. Thank

you for caring about our families and trusting us to fulfill our mission. Thank you for your

continued love, prayers and support. We are so grateful.

Blessing and peace-

Lent 2019: With All Your Heart

In this season of formation and preparation, we again approach the forty days of Lent from a variety of different per-spectives and points along the Christian journey. During this season, new and longtime Christians alike hear the call to return to God with all their hearts, thus entering a season historically characterized by much prayer and fast-ing. These works of discipline have for hundreds of years served as a means by which new converts prepare for baptism, which occurs as a part of the Easter Vigil. Using the words of Wesleyan theology, we believe all this work

is initiated by God, who invites us to come before God with all our hearts.

When approaching Palm/Passion Sunday and Easter Day, we have presented more readings, understanding that across the church, the proclamation of the gospel narratives that tell the story of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, pas-sion, and resurrection are vital to worship and discipleship. The incorporation of Easter Day into this series creates a departure from the form of previous years of resourcing. You will notice that Easter Day serves as a hinge point between the seasons of Lent and Easter, and the Scriptures and resources for that day connect both seasons as

formation and doctrine come together in one narrative stream.

May your Lenten season be one of challenge, commitment, and support as the church responds to the call of God–

“Return to me with all your heart” (Joel 2:12).

Keep Praying! God is listening to your every word.

When we pray to God great things happen to us. We are creating a beautiful, meaningful bond with our Creator. Schedule a time each day to sit down and have a conversation with God so that you can reap the benefits of prayer. It will improve your day to day life and strengthen your faith. This is the perfect time to give God thanks and praise for His son Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
