Many people that I know have the same traditions each year, and I hope the day brings back wonderful and comforting memories for all of you. For the past several years, my family has not travelled, and we have begun to establish a bit of a regular tradition of celebrating with friends who also have families a long distance away. I love that this is now becoming our new tradition. This year, however, we have decided to celebrate Thanksgiving and my mother’s 80th birthday. If you knew my mother, you would understand the challenges involved with this plan. Several years ago, my brother and I attempted to throw my parents a party for their 50th anniversary. My mother was so adamant about not having a party—“It is too much trouble...too much expense...too much for friends to travel...”—on and on to the point that we ended up cancelling the party. Based on that experience, we decided upon a better strategy for this celebration, and we have planned and set the party before informing my mother (a surprise party is not an option). When she did find out, her reaction was not good, as anticipated. My younger nieces just couldn’t understand why Oma was upset about having a birthday party! We have held firm and refused to cancel the party, and amazingly enough, my mother is actually starting to get excited about the party! I am so thankful to still have both of my parents, and I guess that I am telling this story to express that thanks. My time with them is limited due to distance, and I value the time we are able to have together. Spending time with those we love and care about is what holidays are about; despite the challenges, we need to celebrate when we have the opportunity. I see the commitment to family here every day, and it is absolutely one of the things I love most about this job. Please join us for our traditional Thanksgiving brunch. We do ask that you make a reservation, as this is the busiest meal of the year for us. Finally, as I do every year, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to our Belmont Village family: our wonderful residents, families, and our amazing staff who perform countless acts of kindness every day. For all of you, I am thankful.

Chicago History MuseumThe 1968 Exhibit is filled with

the sights and sounds of thismedia-saturated year, includingcontributions from news anchorTom Brokaw, legendary folk-popsinger José Feliciano, andastronaut James Lovell. Explorestories told by Vietnam vets,self-proclaimed hippies, conservative voters, and everydayAmericans. Reminisce overfashion, music, food, andhousehold items.

Chicago’s critical role in theconflicts of 1968 grew prominentduring the month of August. Asdelegates converged on the city forthe Democratic NationalConvention, so too did activistswith a diverse range of interests.Tensions were high on theconvention floor and in the streetsand culminated in violent clashesbetween police anddemonstrators. On Aug. 28,chants of “The whole world iswatching” accompanied aparticularly bloody encounter thatmany came to view as signifying aserious rift in the democraticprocess. The stories of theconfusion and anxiety in the most

heated moments form the core ofthis section of the exhibition.
