Picking up the folk and rhapsodic feel, Bartók’s astounding Concerto for Orchestra closes with a punch. Appalachian Spring’s evocation of 19th-century American settlers meets Barber’s nostalgia plus McTee’s playful Double Play, a work commissioned by Slatkin. Piazzolla is famous for having a foot in both latin and classical worlds. Vivian Fung, an audience favourite, writes a new work for VSO Principal Flautist Christie Reside, mixing together influences from around the world. e Fung commission is supported in part by the Hugh Davidson Fund of e Victoria Foundation. Songs of the Earth: Mahler meets Tan Dun Sat, February 13, 2021 at 7:00pm — e Orpheum Otto Tausk, conductor Michael Schade, tenor Matthias Goerne, baritone Tan Dun: Earth Concerto Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde (Songs of the Earth) A program contemplating ancient ideas of the earth and our place on it. Mahler took inspiration for his Songs of the Earth from Tan Dynasty poet Li Po. Chinese superstar composer Tan Dun, a big fan of Mahler, wrote his Earth Concerto in dialogue with Mahler’s Songs.
