At nearly 400 feet long and weighing approximately 4.3 million pounds, the newly assembled railroad truss bridge near 130th and Torrence Ave was moved into place on August 25th. It is believed to be the largest truss bridge to ever be moved after being assembled off site.

“The moving of this new truss bridge is an incredible feat of construction and engineering,” said Chicago Department of Transportation Commissioner, Gabe Klein.

Street Dedications for Two Beloved Pastors

Following 5 o’clock mass, with the sun shining and his Annunciata family present, Alderman John A. Pope joined over 100 members of the Annunciata family for a “Street Dedication” to honor the late Father Paul. 111th Street between Avenue G and Avenue H was renamed “Father Paul Cullen Way.”

Father Paul was very helpful in working with the Office of Catholic Schools to form a Board of Specified Jurisdiction for Annunciata School. He personally wrote all the letters to those that went on to form the board and they continue to be very active today.

His love of the school continued down to

each and every student. Father Paul would light up around the students and they, in turn, were always thrilled and excited when he paid visits to their classrooms.

Father Paul served the Order of Friar Servants of Mary (O.S.M.) for 46 years and was the pastor at Annunciata for the last decade. Throughout his life he impacted thousands of peoples’ lives. No matter what the situation, Father Paul could make things better. He was a tireless advocate of the Church and School and was active in all parish events. He believed education was essential and did everything in his power to make sure that the school was the best it could be.

earlier the same day, in the South Chicago neighborhood, another loved community leader was honored. Reverend Hilliard Clyde Hudson served as Pastorof Pilgrim Baptist Church for over a quarter of a century. Since February 1985, Rev Hudson has served diligently and caringly as Pastor. He was well loved and respected in the community and was honored with a service prior to his street dedication.

“It was extremely fitting for the community to honor Rev Hudson by bestowing this honor on him at the crossing just outside the building where he labored for the community,” said Angela Hurlock, executive Director, Claretian Associates. “I feel honored to have had the opportunity to work along side such a great community advocate like Rev Hudson and similar to other community heroes likeNeil Bosanko and Father Tom Moran. He will truly be missed.”

Reverend Hudson was also a recipient of many awards during his lifetime, such as the Mustard Seed Award in 1995 and Who’s Who in Religion 1992-1993. He was also personally honored by Mayor Daley as well as the City Council on March 10th, 2010 as an honor for his 25th anniversary as Pastor at Pilgrim Baptist.

While both, Father Paul and Reverend Hudson are no longer with us physically, be assured that they will be with us forever in spirit. These street dedications will ensure neither shall be forgotten as their names will forever be associated with the locations where they gave so much of their lives.

Voluntary reporting Goals for utilities is

moving forward. The Hispanic American Construction Industry Association (HACIA) would like to congratulate Governor Quinn on signing the Voluntary Reporting Goals for Utilities Bill: SB2526. HACIA backs the bill because it will require all Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC)-regulated utility companies to provide an annual report indicating procurement goals and actual spending on small businesses and enterprises owned by minorities, women and veterans. “We are pleased Governor Quinn has signed this bill and it’s moving forward,” said Jorge J. Perez, executive Director of HACIA. “Utilities have always had opportunities for our members. We look forward to continue working with them and Governor Quinn’s administration on the implementation of this bill.” HACIA Board President and President of DesignBridge, Ltd.

Victor Ignacio Dziekiewicz said this was another important step in recognizing the diversity of this state and the diversity of this country. “We are working together with the governor and legislature to really make an impact on this recognition and the ability for small and minority businesses to share what the state supports.” Governor Quinn signed the bill today at the State of Illinois Building.

Monday, August 27th marked the beginning of a new and exciting academic year on the Maria High School campus at California Avenue and Marquette Road. Representatives from the Sisters of St. Casimir, leadership team members and

the entire student bodies of Maria High School and Catalyst-Maria elementary and High Schools at a celebratory ribbon cutting and balloon launch.

The ceremony commemorated the opening of the school year and the passing of the torch between two organizations

dedicated to improving the lives of the children in the Chicago Lawn community.

Maria High School, which celebrated its centennial last year, will close at the end of the 2012-2013 school year due to declining enrollment and rising costs. To ensure that educational choice remains an option for neighborhood children, the Sisters of St. Casimir and the leadership of Maria High School entered into a partnership with the Catalyst Schools, a network of charter schools that emphasizes rigor, college expectations and excellence. Out of that partnership was born Catalyst-Maria, the third Catalyst campus, and the first one that will eventually encompass grades K-12 in two CPS charter schools that share the same location. Catalyst Maria-High School and Catalyst-Maria elementary School are poised to continue the Maria tradition of preparing students for success in both school and in life.

The ceremony took place in the morning as all students, teachers, administrators and guests, including many Sisters of St. Casimir and family members, met for

festivities at the softball field behind the school.

In speaking to the crowds, Vice President of Catalyst Schools, David Baldwin, pledged that Catalyst Maria will live up to the legacy of St. Casimir Academy and Maria High School and will serve the community with the same passion and commitment. Later in the program, Foulkes, along with Sr. Immacula Wendt, General Superior of the Sisters of St. Casimir, and Terry Toth, Chairman of the Catalyst Board, shared ribbon cutting duties and welcomed 380 kindergarten through fifth grade students to their first day of school. One hundred seventy-five Catalyst Maria ninth graders and 95 Maria High School sophomores, juniors, and seniors began school on August 20th.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, representatives from each grade level released dozens of multi-colored balloons. The sight of vibrant balloons floating up, up and away symbolized the unlimited potential of both the Maria students and the Catalyst scholars.

“It sounds like the east Side has some hidden talent,” stated a first time attendee at ONT’s Second Spotlight series, which featured performances by the Free AJents and CoJack. Small World Inn’s outdoor patio filled with attendees last Friday, eager to check out the lyrical skills of these SkyWay Music artists.

At the end of the night, CoJack was presented with a banner congratulating him on his victory for the Second Annual Battle of the Bands. The night would not have been complete without DJ JoeMasterC who kept the music going before and after each set.The ONT Spotlight Series events are meant to mix the longstanding fans of bands and performers along with individuals who have yet to hear the established talent the area has to offer.

The annual Annunciata Fest was full of delicious food, entertainment, games and plenty of attendees.

This year the Fest took place on August 17th-19th, at its usual location - the church/school parking lot.Friday night opened with a performance by the Annunciata choir and the local Girl’s and Boy’s Scouts.

SYnOPSIS: A misunderstood boy, takes on

ghosts, zombies and grown-ups to save his town from a centuries-old curse.

rEVIEW: The film has a lot of heart, and is very thoughtful and pointed in its messages. The animation is gorgeous, the characters strong, and the experience entertaining from start to finish. But what is it about dark subject matter that lends itself so well to the art of stop-motion animation? Following in the footsteps of The Nightmare Before Christmas, The

Corpse Bride, and Coraline, ParaNorman arrives with another grim tale revolving around things that go bump in the night. Furthermore, it follows a trend of movies with stern anti-bullying messages wrapped around its plot details – indicating that it’s not just the living that feel victimized. Centering on Blithe Hollow, a town that is best known for its persecution of witches, ParaNorman follows our young misunderstood hero as he deals with a family that doesn’t get him, classmates that bully or ignore him, and his uncanny ability to see and talk to dead people. It’s a gift he doesn’t enjoy – as we watch him walk to school saying good morning to various departed appertains certain empathy is created for the boy with no real friends in the living world. If you’ve seen The Frighteners, think of ParaNorman as that movie skewed for a younger crowd. As in Coraline, the animation is gorgeous. Fell and Butler haven’t mastered the full potential of stop-motion the way Henry Selick did with Coraline, but they come awfully close and, more importantly, leave a visually distinctive stamp on the material. ParaNorman shares many

aesthetic traits with Coraline and The Nightmare Before Christmas, but thanks to unique character and background designs, it overall looks a little unlike any other stop-motion film. The employment of 3D is exquisite, immersing the viewer in depth and highlighting details one wouldn’t notice in two dimensions. ParaNorman confirms that Laika is an animation studio worth watching out for. As with Coraline, they’ve crafted a film that truly respects its young audience, and for that, I respect it right back. Not every kids’ movie needs to be twisted and stylized like ParaNorman, but they do require a strong voice, relatable characters, and a positive message, and many films would do well to learn by Laika’s example. ParaNorman couldn’t possibly respect its audience any more, and for that, I admire the film greatly.

10 Alderman Pope’s Annual Senior PicnicBy ONT [email protected]

On Friday August 17, Alderman John A. Pope and his staff celebrated his annual Senior Picnic. Hundreds of community members came out for bingo, raffles, food and fun. There were many participants involved in this anticipated event.

The Hegewisch Community Committee took care of the bingo games. Prizes included smoke detectors and Jewel Foods gift cards, which were personally purchased by Alderman Pope. The speakers included: Alderman Pope, Yafawn Smith from Xfinity, Patty from HCC, Denise Nelson from eMB Medical Supply, Yolanda DeAnda

from the east Side Chamber and ONT.

Food was purchased from Pete’s Fresh Market and was donated by Yafawn Smith of Comcast Xfinity. Yafawn and Xfinity also donated a $200 gift certificate for service which was raffled off at the picnic. Paleteria el Potrillo donated ice cream bars (paletas), which she does every year. A very big thank you to Rosa and el Potrillo. The South Chicago Chamber of Commerce and SSA #5 provided the Trolley service and the location was donated by St. Simeon.

All in all, the Senior Picnic was a great success and we look forward to it again next year.

Torrence Ave Bridge Moved into PlaceContinued from front page

“It also demonstrates the strength of the CReATe partnership between government, the railroads and other stakeholders to bring complicated projects like these to fruition to improve the quality of life for Chicago-area communities.”

The new bridge, which is part of Mayor Rahm emanuel’s ‘Building a New Chicago’ infrastructure program, is a $101 million reconfiguration and grade separation of the intersection at 130th Street and Torrence Ave.

It is also part of the CReATe project, which is a partnership between the U.S. Department of Transportation, the State of Illinois, City of Chicago, Metra, Amtrak and the nation’s freight railroads to invest billions that are needed to improve and increase

efficiency for the area’s passenger and freight rail infrastructure.

The goal for the bridge is to eliminate the two current crossings of the Norfolk Southern tracks with two roadways to improve the traffic flow. The project will also include the lowering of both roads to fit under the new bridges for the Norfolk Southern fright tracks. The new truss bridge, recently put in place, is for the Chicago South Shore and South Bend commuter rails.

At completion, six new bridges (railroad, roadway and pedestrian/bicyclists bridges) a mixed-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists, retaining walls, drainage system, street lighting, traffic signals, roadway pavement and extensive landscaping will all be completed.

Sports GWHS Fall Sports BeginsBy Elizabeth [email protected]

George Washington High School started their fall sports program on Thursday, August 23rd against Kennedy High School with girls’ volleyball. The girls’ Varsity team is lead by head coach, Sara Kalemba, (also the Varsity softball coach) and coach Anthony Gomez (who is also the wrestling coach). Along with them is the Junior Varsity volleyball team being lead by Tom Stebich.

The team hopes to continue to be a formidable squad as their Varsity team of last year won their conference, while the Junior Varsity team came in third place. This year GWHS moved up in conference levels and are playing some of the best schools in the city. Upcoming dates for GWHS’ volleyball games are on Monday,

August 27th and Wednesday, August 29th at the school.

During tryouts, the volleyball team had over 75 kids come out to play. With such a big turnout this year, they had to create an all freshmen girls’ volleyball team with Hector Patino as the head coach. The 2012 Varsity Girls’ Volleyball roster is Leslie Lopez, Diamond Luna, Olivia Cortez, Brianna Martin, Brittney Treijo, Allison Brazynski, Stephanie Hernandez, Divine Horton, Mercedez Navia, Cassandra Chacon, Bridget Davis, Clarissa Jimenez, Cathy Montiel, Isela Maradiaga, Amalia Vega and Deanna Nordengreen.

L.515 GWHS Fall Sports Begins

2012 season,” said Coach Gomez. “Because of last year’s Conference Championship, we were bumped up to Super Conference and we are expecting nothing but hard work and dedication from our girls giving a new face to Washington’s Volleyball program. We are now competing at the top and we expect to show other teams that we belong and are willing and able to compete.”On Friday, August 24th GWHS plays Bennett High School for the first football game of the season. September 1st, Washington plays St. Francis De Sales in their first football game against each other in a few years. The coaches expect the team to do well this year coming off their winning season placing 2nd in their conference.

Also, coming off an exceptionally great season is the GWHS girls’ swim team. First time head coach,

Androniki Ganczewski, who had been an assistant at GWHS for the past two years, is assisted this year by coach Rachel Yzaguirre and Junior Varsity coach, Marisol Cholewick. They had more kids come out this year to tryouts where they had to create a Junior Varsity team for the first time in a few years.

Let’s wish them all good luck and a great season.
