Field Trip to Hoi Hai Wan Marine Park

•We went to Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park on 15th January,2008

•It was mostly sunny with scattered clouds.

•It was quite cold, we used an electronic thermometer to measure the air temperature, it was 13.8℃.

Hong Kong is located on the Northern margins of the tropics and has a subtropical climate. The monsoon winds cause a marked season alternation of weather: winters are cool and dry and summers are hot and wet.

Hong Kong has a total land area of 1,100Km2 surrounded by 1800Km2 of territorial waters.

Hoi Hai Wan’s Natural Environment – An Overview

Hoi Hai Wan Marine Park covers an area of around 2.6 Km2. The Park is a sheltered bay. It is a park consisting of an area of sea and the marine life there is protected by law, so we cannot destroy the creatures there.

Weather Condition on Jan 15.

We did some simple experiments as the Oceanographers do. We used a flag and a compass for measuring the wind direction.

The wind direction was:“NNE”

Then we used anemometer to measure the wind speed.

The wind speed was:6.4Km/h

We took some water from the sea, and then, we measured the surface water temperature, salinity of sea water, dissolve oxygen level.

Surface water temp. was 17.5 ℃ Salinity of sea water was 34ppt

Dissolved oxygen was 7.82mg/L

Then we measured the visibility of seawater by a Secchi Disc.

Organism Observation

Then we took some planktons sample by a plankton net and observe the planktons under microscopes.

After the trip, we learnt that there are different types of planktons, they are zoo plankton & phytoplankton.

Organism ObservationBut, a lot of students discussed about plankton in KF, and I also searched a lot of information from Internet myself, and I learnt that there are some even smaller planktons which is called Bacterioplankton, and Planktons eat other smaller planktons or minerals in water.

Organism ObservationThen we took a glass bottom boat to observe underwater organisms. We saw some soft corals and hard corals. We also saw a lot of sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and some coral fishes, such as groupers, and crown fishes.

Organism ObservationWe also saw a kiln when we were leaving the Hoi Hai Wan marine park. According to the instruction board, it was a traditional method to produce lime by using live corals, we could still find some coral fossil around it.

Threats of Hoi Hai Wan

Even though Hoi Ha Wan has such variety of marine organisms, and it is protected by law, we think that pollution problem also impact Hoi Ha Wan. Before I read this note from KF, I thought Hoi Hai Wan does not have any waste and sewage disposal problems.

Then, I tried to find some evidence for my theory. And I checked the photos I took during our trip in Hoi Ha Wan. This photos was taken during glass bottom boat trip, it shows a tire on the seabed, and we also saw some rubbish. Besides , the water was also not very clear, the visibility was just 3M according to our measurement.

Similar Threat of Hoi Hai Wan in Hong Kong & The Fresh Water pond in QuebecAccording to Brook’s note, I think both the HK Hoi Hai Wan and the fresh water pond in Quebec are suffered from waste disposal problem.

The reason why is because I think illegal fishermen use harmful chemicals such as cyanide for fishing. These chemicals can kill all the corals and marine creatures.

Similar Threat of Hoi Hai Wan in Hong Kong & The Fresh Water pond in QuebecAccording to Karine’s note, pollution from chemicals is very serious in Hong Kong. However, for oil leakage, I think nearly no oil leaks in Hoi Ha Wan because there is no car nearby.

Further InquiryThough Hoi Hai Wan is very remote from city center, and it is protected under law. However, we are not sure if the it’s ecology would be affected by climate change, there are quite a number of notes talk about global warming, and here is one of the KF notes talking about the harmfulness of Carbon dioxide.

Further InquiryThis is the first note I wrote. This is about the problem of carbon dioxide. At that time, I was learning about global warming in English lessons, and I am interested to know deeper in this topic, and so I wrote this note in KF.

Further InquiryThis is another note I wrote in KF about global warming. At first I thought that global warming is only a kind of pollution. But now I find out that global warming was cause by Carbon Dioxide, pollution and human beings. But, it is a very big topic, and I hope I can study this problem, and then find a solution for it.

Further InquiryI have learn a lot of things which are all related to global warming. Such as atmosphere, carbon dioxide, carbon footprint, pollutions etc. I think it is very good to share our own ideas with others. So I’m very happy that I can write notes and share with you.
