Prayer Hint for the Week:

Choosing a Scripture passage to use for your prayer time is a good way to begin a conversation with God. The Gospel or one of the Scripture for the upcoming Sunday Mass will help open your heart to be more attentive at Mass. Ask the Holy Spirit to be with you and then read the passage slowly. Listen in the silence to see where God leads your mind and heart.

THE SUSPENSION OF ALL PUBLIC MASSES IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF

PHILADELPHIA On March 17th the Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced that Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez has

suspended all public Masses in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia effective at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18th and until further notice. These measures will be re-evaluated pending future developments.

Archbishop Pérez said, “As the Archbishop of Philadelphia, my first priority is to ensure the health and welfare of those entrusted to the pastoral and temporal care of our Church. So, in light of the developing Coronavirus pandemic, a decision has been made to suspend the public celebration of all Masses in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for the time being.

All of us need to do our part to slow the spread of this illness. Like you, we are monitoring coronavirus developments and look forward to continuing our lives on a more normal basis. While things may look and feel different during these uncertain times, I want to be very clear that the Catholic Church in Philadelphia is not closing down. It is not disappearing, and it will not abandon you. Time and again as our history has proven the Church has risen to meet great challenges and provide a beacon of hope and light.

As your Shepherd, I promise that the Church remains steadfast and is prepared to walk with you and serve you. Neither the Church nor its charitable works will stop. God is always by our side. He never abandons us. I invite you to join me in prayerful solidarity for the intentions of the sick, suffering, and their caregivers, as well as government and health officials. With God’s grace and blessing, we will navigate the difficult waters of this challenge as a united human family, for after all is said and done, we are people of Hope!”

Priests will continue to offer the sacrifice of the Holy Mass in private during this period and to honor all requested Mass intentions.

Churches can remain open as a location for private prayer at the discretion of the pastor. Baptisms, Confessions, Marriages, and Funerals will take place as usual but with due regard for the limitation of participants and reasonable social distancing.

In conjunction with directives already in force in hospitals and institutions, all visits to the sick with Holy Communion, including in private homes, by priests, deacons, and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are suspended. In such instances, only priests will be available to celebrate the Sacraments for those in immediate danger of death. In all circumstances, government and health agency directives for group size and social distancing are to be observed as the Archdiocese of Philadelphia strives to meet the pastoral and temporal needs of all those in need.

St. Joseph and Lent

This past week on March 19, the Church celebrated St. Joseph Day. During Lent, we are encouraged to say yes to God. Through our prayers, fasting, and almsgiving, we are doing as God asks us. We can look to the saints, like St. Joseph, as examples of how to live life as holy people. St. Joseph has much to teach us!

St. Joseph took care of Mary and Jesus. How can you take care of someone in your family? Besides caring for those you live with, is there a relative that is sick or elderly… or is there someone in your family you need to reach out in reconciliation and forgiveness?

St. Joseph obeyed God by marrying a pregnant Mary. What is one way you can obey God this Lent? St. Joseph frequently took time to pray and listen for God’s direction in his life, especially in the tough and difficult decisions. Have you taken the time to sit in prayer and listen for God’s direction in your life?

St. Joseph worked to give Mary and Jesus the things they needed. What can I do this Lent to help my family, not just to satisfy their material needs…. But to give my time and presence to support their spiritual and emotional needs.

“St. Joseph was ‘a just man’ a tireless worker, the upright guardian of those entrusted to his care. May he always guard, protect, and enlighten families.” ~ Pope St. John Paul II

Till We Have Faces by C. S. Lewis

C. S. Lewis - the great British writer, scholar, lay theologian, broadcaster, Christian apologist, and bestselling author of Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce, The Chronicles of Narnia, and many

other beloved classics - brilliantly reimagines the story of Cupid and Psyche. Told from the viewpoint of Psyche’s sister, Orual, Till We Have Faces is a brilliant examination of envy, betrayal, loss, blame, grief, guilt,

and conversion. In this, his final - and most mature and masterful novel, Lewis reminds us of our own fallibility and the role of a higher power in our lives.

The past few weeks have certainly been unprecedented in our society as we navigate the impacts of the novel coronavirus, locally, nationally, and across the world. Please be assured that the health and safety of our students is our top priority. At this time, it is important to also keep perspective and to continue to pray for a positive outcome for everyone being affected by this virus.

Seasons of the Soul The Need for Confidence Have you ever worried about the future? The destiny of a son or daughter, outliving your retirement investments, or caring for an aging, disabled parent?

Have you ever worried about the past? Regretted decisions, broken relationships or unfulfilled dreams? Have you ever had the experience of being worried about everything in general, but nothing in particular? If you said “yes,” then you know something of anxiety.

There are many things in our lives that cause us to be anxious: regrets about the past, uncertainties about the future, and everything in between. But, as you probably know, anxiety can be as bad – or sometimes even worse – than the thing about which we were worried in the first place.

The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language defines anxiety as “a state of intense apprehension, uncertainty and fear resulting from…a threatening situation or event, often to a degree that the normal physical and psychological functioning of the affected individual is disrupted.” St. Francis de Sales certainly knew the danger of anxiety. In his Introduction to the Devout

Life (1609), he wrote: “Anxiety is the greatest evil that can befall us, sin excepted.” Strong language. He continued: “Sedition and internal troubles ruin a nation utterly and prevent it from being able to resist a foreign invasion. Similarly, when we are troubled and restless we lose our power to maintain the virtue that we have acquired. We also lose the means of resisting the temptations of the enemy who then makes every effort to fish, as they say, in troubled waters.”

Anxiety not only hinders us from resisting evil. It can also prevent us from achieving what is good. How many first dates, interviews for a job promotion, or efforts to win that “big” contract have gone up in flames because of anxiety?

St. Francis de Sales wrote: “Anxiety arises from an inordinate desire to be freed from the evil we experience or to acquire the good for which we hope. Yet there is nothing which so aggravates the evil or impedes the good as anxiety and eagerness.” St. Jane de Chantal was a contemporary and friend of St. Francis de Sales. In her advice to a woman who had recently been widowed, St. Jane offered her remedy for anxiety: “Try to calm your passions and

inclinations and live according to the sound reason and the holy will of God. Otherwise, you will always be anxious and perturbed.”

St. Francis de Sales wrote: “When you are taken up by a desire to be delivered from some evil or to obtain some good, place yourself above all in peace and tranquility. Compose your judgment and your will. Then, quietly and gently, pursue the object of your desire, taking in order the means that are fitting. And when I say ‘gently,’ I do not mean ‘negligently’ but without eagerness, confusion and anxiety. Otherwise, you will spoil everything.” So, when faced with some sin or setback to avoid, or when striving to obtain some gift or good, remain calm and avoid all solicitude. Ask God for the presence of mind and heart to stay centered. Consider what God gives you the courage and ability to do on your own behalf. Consider, too, that which is only in the hands of God.

Perhaps St. Jane says it best. “What I mean is that in all your good works you should unite yourself to the Will of God’s good pleasure, and in your faults and imperfections, you should unite yourself to God’s compassion gently, quietly and with peace of mind.”
