Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful likethe heavenly Father, and have toldus that whoever sees you sees him.Show us your face and we will besaved.Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeusand Matthew from being enslavedby money; the adulteress andMagdalene from seeking happiness only in createdthings; made Peter weep after his betrayal;and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.

Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:“If you knew the gift of God!”

You are the visible face of the invisible Father,of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy:let the Church be your visible face in the world,

its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feelcompassion for those in ignorance and error:let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved and forgiven by God.

Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointingso that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed,

and restore sight to the blind.

We ask this through the intercession of Mary,Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign withthe Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.

Amen.

JJJJJUUUUULLLLL

PASTOR’S CORNERNovember 19 - 20, 2016

Homework for the week of November 20 - November 26Luke 21:1-4

This weekend we celebrate the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe; traditionally the Feast ofChrist the King. This Sunday is the last Sunday of the Church’s liturgical year which begins with the First Sunday ofAdvent. As we gather to worship the Lord as a community of faith, as individuals we renew our personal relationshipwith Jesus Christ as our Lord and our Savior. The world we live in has so many ideas, values and attitudes. Many ofthese are in harmony with the teachings, the example and the values of the great Teacher, Jesus Christ. Many are not.May each one of us be open to the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us with wisdom and understanding so that our decisionsand our choices will be in harmony and in obedience to the ways and the commandments of the Lord Jesus Christ. Thecore values of the Savior who is our Lord and our King are so well reflected in the Jubilee Year of Mercy. The Gospelof the Mass this weekend (Luke 23:35-43) is a powerful example of the quality of the King we serve and believe in.Unlike most relationships we have with people of authority and power, our King does much more for us than we do forhim. As Jesus hung on the cross on Good Friday, he forgives one of the criminals being crucified. “And the criminalsaid, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. He replied to him, Amen, I say to you, today you will bewith me in Paradise.” As we renew our faith in the Lord Jesus as our King, may our sincerity, our honesty and ourcontrition be as real as those of the good thief. May each one of us one day be blessed to hear from the lips of JesusChrist, “Today you will be with me in Paradise.”

This Thursday, November 24, is the national holiday of Thanksgiving Day. This holiday has its roots in the earlyhistory of our nation with the Pilgrims in the 1600’s. As we prepare to share with all of our fellow citizens one of themost appreciated American holidays, may our hearts strive to be truly grateful for the abundant gifts and almostinnumerable blessings that are ours as American citizens. One of the best ways to do Thanksgiving is to attend Massas a family. Here at St. Elizabeth Seton, we will have Mass at 8AM on the morning of Thanksgiving. For me as a Priest,a Pastor, an American citizen and as a Catholic, one of the most enjoyable and one of the most meaningful Masses ofthe year is the one this Thursday. Between now and Thanksgiving, I encourage each of you to take some time and bespecific for what you are thankful. Pray to the Lord and ask for his guidance to know your blessings and your gifts, asan individual, as a member of your family, as a citizen our community and of our country and as a Catholic andparishioner of St. Elizabeth Seton Church. We are enjoying one of our great patriotic blessings at this very time.Following the national elections of Tuesday, November 8, we are going through the peaceful and orderly transfer ofpolitical power from our current President Obama and his democratic administration to the newly elected PresidentTrump and a republican administration. May Thanksgiving 2016 be a time of family harmony, a time of deep gratitudeand a time of thankfulness for the providence of our God who is so generous and so bountiful to us, to our loved onesand to our country. May God bless America and may America always honor, praise and worship the living God.

Last weekend at all the Masses I was able to commission all the liturgical ministers: altar servers, sacristans, ministers of the Eucharist, lectors, choir members and ministers of hospitality. I commend all who serve at the Liturgy, especially those who recently committed to serve at the Stewardship Fair and were given some initial training lastSaturday morning, November 12. My appreciation to the Seton Sunshine Group for their graciousness in serving thebreakfast and for the members of the Stewardship Committee and Deacon Nelson Schexnayder who helped with thetraining of the new ministers. May all of us strive to do our best when we gather to worship the Lord to give him theglory, the praise and the honor that his holy name deserves.

My prayers, love, best wishes and gratitude to you and to your loved ones, for who you are, for all you do for the Lordand for all you do for the good of St. Elizabeth Seton Church Parish. May all of us have a peaceful, joyful and blessedThanksgiving week. May the spirit of Psalm 122 of today’s Mass fill us as we pray: “Let us go rejoicing to the houseof the Lord.”

SHALOM! Fr. Gary

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humblevoices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed yourorder and returned to its former quietude. You are still theMaster of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a dangerover which we have no control. The Gulf, like a provokedand angry giant, can awaken from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land andspread chaos and disaster.

During this hurricane season we turn to you, O LovingFather. Spare us from past tragedies whose memoriesare still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse toheal with the passing of time. 0 Virgin, Star of the Sea,Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Sonin our behalf, so that spared from the calamities commonto this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude,we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reachheavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaitsus.

Amen

Homework for the week of November 20 - 26Luke 21:1-4

The book of Samuel recounts for us today the anointingof David as king of Israel. It was the elders of Israelwho declared David king that day, but it was God whocalled David to shepherd Israel. Thus mandated by thecitizens of his kingdom and by his God, David took hisplace in a long line of kings.

The apostle Paul speaks to us of kingship as well, buton a much higher plane: the kingship of Jesus our Lord.As great as David was, he and all earthly monarchswho came before and after him in their kingdoms aroundthe world are minor kings bycomparison to the true King. Andlastly, we hear the story of that trueKing in perhaps his weakestmoment: near death, hanging on across, taunted by a commoncriminal and by the world at large.

KINGSHIP

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONAmong the Catholics seeking religious freedom in America

were the Carrolls of Maryland, who arrived in 1649 fromIreland via England. Charles Carroll, born in Annapolis in1737, was the only Catholic signer of the Declaration ofIndependence, and was the longest surviving signer. As wasthe custom for English Catholics, he attended English schoolsin Belgium and later university in France. By the time hesigned the Declaration, he was the richest man in America, and his decision to sign would hardly go unnoticed by theking.

Because Carroll was so wealthy and because he was aCatholic, he had more to lose than the others. Those whosigned became traitors to the Crown and risked losingeverything. It is said that someone grumbled that there weremany men in the world named Charles Carroll, and he coulddodge responsibility if he had to. For that reason, he added aflair to his signature, “of Carrollton,” making it clear that heput everything at risk

His cousin John, also an ardent supporter of the AmericanRevolution, was ordained a Jesuit priest and returned toMaryland at the outbreak of hostilitites. Upheavals in Europeforced the Jesuit order to dissolve, leaving Carroll a secularpriest. Ultimately, it was John Carroll who was asked toorganize the Catholic Church in the new nation. No one wasbetter positioned for this task; a cultured man from anesteemed family, a cherished friend of Benjamin Franklinand George Washington, and a man so thoroughly attuned toan undercurrent of anti-Catholicism in the colonies that hecould charm powerful people to a new point of view.
