Message from Fr. Pergjini- As I am preparing to write my article, outside is the most beautiful day of November. I am looking from my window. The charming sun mixed with a light wind extends its warmth to the beautiful colored leaves. They fly up and down. It seems that they still are struggling to exist in their own way. However, their destiny is to fall on the ground and never have life again. So the beauty of the day can also offer a somber reflection on the end of the day, end season, and the end of life for these beautiful leaves. Fall is magnificent with its vivid natural colors and still blue skies, yet also with its many reminders of an end that comes to all life, someday an end of time itself. Contemplating and following the beautiful patterns of nature on this gorgeous day here in my favored season of autumn I am taken with finality of so many beautiful leaves that fall, taking their last slow, fluttering flight like aging butterflies and falling gently on the cold ground to the end, to their death. For them there is no more life, no more hope. Their spring beauty filled with life and promising hope is gone now. Their unique and magical colors signal their dramatic end, but for us who believe in Christ are not absorbed by the sad ending of the beautiful colored leaves. This Sunday, November 26th, is the last Sunday of Ordinary Time, the last Sunday of the liturgical year. The Catholic Church ends its liturgical year with the solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe. On December 11, 1925 Pope Pius XI issued his encyclical letter Quas primas. This document meant to remind to the faithful that the most powerful weapon against the destructive

forces of the age is to acknowledge of the kingship of Christ. Pope Pius the XI in his letter of 1925 wisely mentioned that church documents are read only by few learned men and women while the celebrations of the feasts during the liturgical year moves and teach all the faithful, every year and forever. A document he said brings saving touch and joy to the human intellect, but the celebration of the liturgical feasts influence not only the mind but the heart and soul and the whole nature of men and women. Yes indeed, the celebration of the solemnity of the Christ the King of the universe touches our whole human nature. As we end this liturgical year with its solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe, our goal and our glory to be followers of Christ the King, we trust and abandon ourselves into the hands of Christ the King not only during the liturgical but our entire earthly pilgrimage. The famous and well-known words

from the letter to the Hebrews 13:8: " Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." He is our hope," the Alfa and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end." (Rev 22.13) Again we are consoled and filled with Christian hope that saves our broken souls. The Gospel of Saint Mathew reminds us that to love our neighbor will be decisive criterion at the final judgment because Christ identifies himself with all of suffer. Yes indeed we are people who unite our voices praising and glorifying the Almighty Father every single Sunday in the most powerful sacrifice on earth, the Holy Mass, by proclaiming Christ the King of the Universe. The beautiful preface of the Mass reminds all of us Christ our King who at the end of time will present to His Father the Eternal and universal kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love and peace." Just as the magnificent leaves have an end, we humans have one too, an end to our earthly life. But with us it is different because our End is without End. Our hope and our goal is life in Eternity with Christ the King of the Universe who promised Eternal Kingdom for us if we freely are willing to love Him in the suffering and misery of our neighbor, and faithfully live the saving Truth of His commandments. The prayer after Holy Communion of the Holy Mass of Christ the King of the Universe strengthens our faith in the power of Eucharist: Having received the food of immortality we ask, O Lord, that, glorifying in obedience to the commands of Christ, the King of the universe, we may live with him eternally in his heavenly Kingdom. Who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen!

LIVES OF THE SAINTS ST. CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA

St. Catherine is believed to have been born in Alexandria, Egypt of a noble family. According to the Legend of St. Catherine, this young woman converted to Christianity after receiving a vision. Her love for learning was reminiscent of that of Solomon who prayed, and prudence was given him; pleaded, and the spirit of Wisdom came to him. “I preferred her to scepter and throne,” he wrote, “and I deemed riches nothing in comparison with her, nor did I liken any priceless gem to her. Because all gold, in view of her, is a little sand, and before her, silver is to be accounted mire. Beyond health and comeliness I loved her, and I chose to have her rather than the light, because the splendor of her never yields to sleep. Yet all good things together came to me in her company, and countless riches at her hands; and I rejoiced in them all, because Wisdom is their leader, though I had not known that she is the mother of these” (Ws 7:7-12). At the age of 18, Catherine debated 50 pagan philosophers who were so amazed at her wisdom and debating skills that they became Christians. She denounced the emperor Maxentius for persecuting Christians. Fifty of her converts were then burned to death by him who offered Catherine a royal marriage if she would deny the Faith. Her refusal landed her in prison. While there, and while the emperor was away, Catherine converted his wife and two hundred of his soldiers. He had them all put to death. Catherine was likewise condemned along with them. She was sentenced to be executed on a spiked wheel, but when she touched the wheel it shattered and so she was beheaded. Centuries later, angels are said to have carried her body of to a monastery at the foot of Mt. Sinai. Devotion to her spread as a result of the Crusades. Her voice was one of those heard by St. Joan of Arc. She was almost

immediately invoked as the patroness of students, teachers, librarians and lawyers and is officially venerated as the patroness of philosophers and preachers. Catherine is one of the 14 Holy Helpers especially honored in Germany and Hungary.

God of power and mercy, you gave St. Catherine of Alexandria, your martyr, victory over pain and suffering. Strengthen us who celebrate this day of her triumph and help us to be victorious over the evils that threaten us. Grant this through our Lord Jesus

Christ, your Son who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

ST. ANDREW

The feast in honor of St. Andrew has been celebrated on November 30 since the beginning of the 5th century, according to the Jerusalem Calendar. Around the year 470 a church was dedicated to him in Rome, near St. Mary Major, because he was the brother of St. Peter. He had been a follower of John the Baptist and was the first of the apostles to follow Christ; in fact it was he who led his brother Peter to Christ (Jn 1:35-42). For that reason the Greeks called him the “Protoclete” or first called. Tradition says that he preached the gospel in Greece and in the year 60 was crucified in Patras on an X-shaped cross (now known as St. Andrew’s cross). His relics were transferred to Constantinople in 357 and later to Amalfi, Italy, in 1208, but his skull was sent to Rome in 1462. In 1964, as an ecumenical gesture, his relics were returned to Patras in Greece. There is great devotion to him in the Byzantine Church. He is patron of Russia and Scotland.

Lord, in your kindness hear our petitions. You called Andrew the apostle to preach the gospel and to guide your Church in faith. May he always be our friend in your presence to help us with his prayers.

ST. FRANCIS XAVIER (1506-1552)

On December 3, 1552, Francis Xavier died on the island of Shangchwan, near the Chinese port of Canton. He was canonized in 1662, inscribed in the Roman Calendar in 1663, and named patron of India and the Far East in 1748. Finally, in 1927 he was declared patron of foreign missions, together with St. Thérèse of Lisieux. He was born of a noble Basque family in Navarra, Spain, and in 1525 took up his studies in Paris. On the feast of the Assumption in 1534 he made his religious profession together with St. Ignatius Loyola in a church in Montmartre, Paris. At that time he also made a vow to go to the Holy Land, but being unable to do so because of a blockade by the Turkish Muslims, he went instead to Rome in 1538, where he placed himself at the disposition of the pope for work in the foreign missions. He and Ignatius Loyola had been ordained to the priesthood in Venice the preceding year. Consequently, when the King of Portugal asked for missionaries for India, Francis was able to take the place of a sick confrere. Francis labored as a missionary in Goa, Malacca, Japan and China, and converted approximately 30,000 pagans. He died of exhaustion and fever on the island of Shangchwan.

Father, you inflamed St. Francis, son of the newborn Society of Jesus, with the ardor of charity and zeal for souls, so that, ignoring dangers, difficulties and fatigue, he would embark on numerous journeys and, acquainting people

with the mysteries of salvation, would make them members of your Church. -Saints of the Roman Calendar
