SHEPHERD’S VOICE “If You Love Me, You Will Keep My Commandments”

The proclamation of the Word by the apostles that made the Jerusalem Church come together was also effective in Samaria: faith breaks the age-old barrier between Jews and Samaritans through the preaching of Philip. Amazing things happen: demons are cast out, the sick are healed, and great numbers are baptized and received the Holy Spirit. It all began with the preaching of Phil-ip and the crowd’s attention. It was listening to God’s word that leads to wonders. How attentive are we to God’s Word? What wonders had the Word of God done to our lives, to our family and com-munity? Have we been attentive?

With what happened to the Samaritan community, they must have sung what we say in our responsorial Psalm: “come and see the works of God” and like the apostles, we have all the reason to say – “Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.”

Our second reading from the 1 Peter is full of advice to Christians living in a hostile world. “Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope,” he tells them, “but do it with gentleness and reverence” (1 Peter 3:15-16). The faith is not something to be forced on others, with strident anger or hostility ra-ther, we treat those who do not share our hope with reverence. In other words, we are to be like Christ, who suffered for doing what was good. When we suffer, was it doing what was good or simply because of our foolishness, negligence, stupidity and too much hurry? If so, we have no one to blame but ourselves.

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). How we love Jesus now that he is gone? He’s never been gone, only the manner in which he is present to us has changed since he walked the hills of Galilee and the streets of Jerusalem. The Lord is present in the sacraments especially the Eucharist, in the Word – Sacred Scriptures we read or proclaimed at mass, in this assembly today and through other people especially the least, the lost, the last of our brothers and sisters.

Jesus did not leave us orphans because Jesus knew it was not easy to be his follower. Thus, he said: “I will ask the Father and he will give you another Paraclete-to be with you always: the Spirit of Truth” (John 14:16). Various translations render it Advocate, Intercessor, Counselor, Protector, Comforter, Helper, and Consoler.

Jesus clearly stated how we are to love him – “If you love me, you will keep my commands” (John 14:15). “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another” (John 13:34). Thus the first way to love Jesus is to keep his commandments – all that he taught us while he was on earth. The washing of the feet of the disciples was a powerful reminder how to love Jesus, that is - by serving one another in hu-mility and love. This is the kind of love and keeping his commandments that assures us that his divine love will remain in us. As God has loved Jesus, so Jesus has loved us, and thus so we must love one another. If we do this, Jesus stays with us.

Let this be our Prayer: Lord Jesus, in this Eucharist, open our eyes, our minds and our hearts to ways in which we can love you by accepting and following the mandate to love one another.” Amen.

God Bless,

Fr. Roni

T T The custom of genuflection is not found everywhere in the Catholic Church. In fact, it is a bit of breach of etiquette to genuflect in most Eastern Catholic Churches. If you’re visiting an Eastern Catholic or an Orthodox church, the “when in Rome” rule should be adopted. Watch what the home team is doing! Usually, Eastern Catholics and Ortho-dox reserve a small portion of the eucharistic bread for the dying in a cupboard or eucharistic dove, but it is not a cen-ter of attention or devotion. The rule is to make a profound bow, called a “metasis,” toward the altar—bowing deeply while making the sign of the cross. East and West split years before we Westerners began to reserve the Blessed Sacrament prominently in our churches. Thus, the East never changed the original cus-tom of bowing toward the altar. Increasingly, as tabernac-les became more widespread in the West and moved into prominent placement within churches, we replaced the bow toward the altar with a genuflection toward the Blessed Sacrament when its place of reservation is visible. In a church where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in a special chapel or off the main axis of the building, normally you should bow toward the altar when you enter your pew, because the eucharistic table is the principal sign of Christ’s presence in the church building. If you have ever participat-ed in the liturgy of Dedication of a Church and Altar, there is no mistaking the altar’s significance: it is first slathered with chrism and then adorned with a brazier billowing clouds of incense that fill the whole church as a sign of prayer and presence! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

D C P N Bishop Fabre has called for an intentional time of pray-er for each of our church parishes in the diocese. He is inviting us to join him in prayer each day for a different church parish in the diocese. You can find a Church Par-ish Novena Card in the back of church. There is a daily prayer on the card, as well as what church parish to pray for each day. May we join Bishop Fabre and all the faith-ful during this intentional time of prayer for the renewal of our parishes. You can learn more about this novena and each of our church parishes in the diocese at: htdiocese.org/churchparishnovena.

D 40 A C The Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux will joyfully celebrate its 40th Anniversary on Pentecost Sunday, June 4, 2017, at 2PM at the Cathedral of St. Francis de Sales. All of the faithful of the Diocese are invited to participate in this momentous historical milestone in our diocese. A recep-tion will follow the Mass.
