From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

What do you want of me, Lord? Where do you want me to serve you?

Where can I sing your praises? I am your song. I am your song and servant, singing your praise like Mary.

Surrendered to your Spirit, ‘Let it be done to me.’ These words, taken from the hymn Servant Song by Sr. Donna McGargill, come to mind as our parish today reflects with gratitude on the ministry carried out by Deacon James Challender. Today we honor him on his retirement from this ministry. How grateful we are that Deacon Jim’s response to the question, “What do you want of me, Lord?” led him, like other good men of our parish, to the Holy Order of Deacon. Church law requires that deacons submit to the bishop a letter of retirement when they reach their 75th year. While Bishop O’Connell has accepted Deacon Jim’s letter, Deacon Jim continues to enjoy the faculties to minister as deacon as parish needs require and health allows. Retired deacons request a renewal of faculties annually. In essence, this means that a retired deacon, much like a retired priest, is relieved of administrative and regularly scheduled duties. He is free then to continue his diaconal ministry at his leisure or in a moderate capacity. Today Deacon Jim will assist at the 11:00 a.m. Mass. Afterward, in the church hall, we shall have an opportunity to greet him and express our gratitude for his ministry over the past 13 years! We also thank Mrs. Challender—Nancy—for sharing so generously in Deacon Jim’s service to the Church.

Lord, grant to your son and our brother James the gifts of courage and joy

that he may continue to serve you more devotedly and be worthy of still further blessings!

With affection, Msgr. Gervasio

We Salute Our Benefactors… Helping to Keep Catholic Education

Affordable

The Jennie Kelly Tuition Scholarship We are delighted to announce the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships to five families of our school. These were made through the great generosity of Mr. Frank Martucci in loving

memory of his mother, Jennie Kelly. Our parish offers its most sincere thanks to Mr. Martucci for this extraordinary gift by which he wishes to honor his mother and make a quality Catholic education possible for the children of our parish. We ask our parishioners to remember in prayer Mrs. Kelly, who valued the mission of Catholic education.

Our Lady of Sorrows-St. Anthony Tuition Assistance Grants

Owing to the generosity of our parishioners through the special “Mission of Our School” envelope for the past few years as well as individual contributions, our parish was pleased

to provide five tuition assistance grants of $1,000 to five families of our school. Thanks to all those who contribute to this fund. In the future the wording on the annual envelope will be more specific—“Tuition Assistance Fund.” This contribution, like all church contributions is tax deductible.

The Sarah Reba Burrichter Tuition Assistance Grants

Owing to the generous bequest of the late Sarah Reba Burrichter, a teacher, our parish was able to award four tuition assistance grants of $500 to four families of our school. Please remember in

your prayers the soul of Ms. Burrichter, whose generosity is helping parents provide a Catholic education for their children.

Religious Education News Welcome back to all Religious Education parents and students. The Religious Education Program is off to a great start with well around 300 students. We have our catechists in place and they are very energetic and ready to share their faith life as well as their knowledge of how God is working through them with your children. This is our third week of classes and things are moving smoothly. Everyone involved in this program—catechist, student, and parent— is challenged by the words and example of Jesus to respect each person’s right to be treated with dignity, respect and love. Parents, thank you for your volunteer help. We need more parents to help, so please sign up today.

Catechists Needed We don’t want to leave anyone out, so we have a great opportunity for you to volunteer in our Religious Education program! Catechists and aides are needed. If you love your faith and are willing to share this faith with children, please call the Office of Religious Education (587-4372).

The Celebration of Mass with the

Anointing of the Sick

7:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 18

Our Lady of Sorrows Church By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests, the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them.” (CCC 1499)

Who may receive this sacrament?

Those awaiting a surgery of a serious nature.

The elderly who are notably weakened, even if not seriously ill.

Sick children may be strengthened through this anointing.

Our parish invites all those Catholics who may be ill to this sacred encounter that they might know that Christ, who often visited and healed the sick, loves them in their illness.

If you would like more information on joining this satisfying ministry, either as a caregiver or a care receiver, please contact Anne (586-6596; [email protected]).

Do You Know… Catholic Social Teaching?

In a world characterized by growing prosperity for some and pervasive poverty for others, Catholic teaching proclaims that a basic moral test is how our most vulnerable members are faring. In a society marred by deepening divisions between rich and poor, our tradition recalls the story of the Last Judgment (Mt. 25: 31-46) and instructs us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first.

Parish School News What a beautiful start to October! Not only are the leaves changing, but we already see growth and changes in our students. The Pre – K and Kindergarten students are now familiar with the school, and say hello to everyone as they navigate the hallways. We feel like they have adjusted beautifully and have been here longer than four weeks. Their excitement at all new things is contagious, and we are always peeking in on them to see what new and exciting things they are learning. The sixth graders are now ready to handle a new instrument, and they received them this week—the ukulele! This is the first group of students to ever try playing this instrument at Our Lady of Sorrows. With a little help from Mr. Kemmey (of course!), they have already learned how to tune them, and then jumped right in to playing the chords. We can’t wait to hear their first song—keep practicing sixth grade! Continuing with our commitment to service, all the students have written letters or cards to, or drawn pictures for, a deployed unit of marines. Each child has echoed the same sentiment: thank you for all you have done to protect us and our great country. We wanted to share with these brave men and women how much we respect them, honor them, and look forward to their safe return home. It is a wonderful lesson to learn, and we are truly grateful for their service.

We also send out a thank you to the National Junior Honor Society and the Student Council for spearheading a collection of hygiene items for those affected by the hurricanes. They were able to collect some basic items such as toothpaste, band aids, combs/brushes, detergent, and trash bags, which will be sent to aid those who have lost everything. Here is a look at some of the collected items they have collected.

As this week comes to a close, we pray for those affected by the tragedy in Las Vegas. Words are so difficult when children ask why and how; there are no easy answers. Our thoughts and prayers go to all those affected by this senseless violence, and we ask God for peace as we move through these days. Peace and blessings, Maureen Tuohy, Principal

The elderly and infirm may unite themselves spiritually to the celebrations of the 13th of each month from May to October 2017. The faithful who follow one of these three ways must also fulfill the ordinary conditions: Go to Confession and Communion Be interiorly detached from sin Pray for the intentions of the Pope Recite the Creed, Our Father, Hail Mary, & Glory Be They should also pray before the image of our Lady of

Fatima invoking her help * "An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints." (Canon 992 and Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1471) A plenary indulgence is a complete remission of temporal punishment due to sins and is limited to one per day. An image of Our Lady of Fatima will be exposed in the Sanctuary (SAC) and at the Shrine of Our Lady (OLS) during the Centennial.

Faith in Our Future Lord Jesus Christ, Word of the Father, we turn to you. Watch over our plans. Enliven our service to the Church. Sustain our labors. Guide our steps in search of the best ways to proclaim your Gospel. Our poverty is great. We do not place trust in ourselves but only in you. Encourage us, reassure us, give us your blessing. You, who with the Holy Spirit, live and reign in us and in your Church forever and ever. Amen.

October—The Month of the Rosary The month of October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. The liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated annually on October 7. It was instituted to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in gratitude for the protection that she gives the Church in answer to the praying of the Rosary by the faithful. During the month of October, let us consider this beautiful prayer of the Rosary as a means that we too can use in order to draw closer to Jesus and Mary by meditating on the great mysteries of our salvation. Please make sure to join us on Thursday, October 12, for our last Fatima Rosary Night.

Rosaries Available—For anyone in need, Rosary beads and prayer pamphlets will be available at Our Lady’s Shrine at Our Lady of Sorrows Church and at the side altar of the Blessed Mother at St. Anthony Church throughout the month. Free will donations will be greatly appreciated to help replenish supplies and to pay for postage for the rosaries we send to the 3rd World missions, the military, and the First Communicants.

October . . . Taking Up the Rosary The rosary is the book of the blind, where souls see and there enact

the greatest drama of love the world has ever known; it is the book of the simple,

which initiates them into mysteries and knowledge more satisfying than the education of other men;

it is the book of the aged, whose eyes close upon the shadow of this world,

and open on the substance of the next. The power of the rosary is beyond description.
