Sixth Sunday of Easter

SUSTAINABLE COFFEE HOUR: About fifty people enjoyed our First SUSTAINABLE Coffee Hour on Sunday, April 24th. OLOS is taking steps to lessen our carbon footprint in every way possible, including Coffee Hour. We have begun using: Fair Trade coffee from Equal Exchange, based in Bridgewater, MA, ceramic coffee mugs, which eliminates paper trash, sugar in a bowl to eliminate the waste created by small paper packets, metal spoons rather than plastic stirrers, 100% recycled paper napkins At our next Coffee Hour in O’Connell Hall, we will begin using water from glass

pitchers in order to eliminate the waste of plastic bottles and will continue to assess what other

faith-filled steps we can take to reduce waste and care for our neighbors and for Mother Earth. Some

possibilities include using plates made from materials other than petroleum-based and creating a

composting area. Stay tuned! (If you have an interest in exploring this and other possible projects, please

Volunteer Appreciation Celebration FUN, FUN,FUN

Saturday April 23rd after the 4:30 PM mass several parishioners gathered with the staff for a reception to honor all those who help to make OLOS a “Family”. Allen played music, Fr. Vinnie lead us in puzzle making and we enjoyed smiles and laughter. Thank you for making this a wonderful faith filled evening!!

May 7th & 8th Second Collection Next week’s second collection supports the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC). CCC communicates the Gospel through various formats, including social media, podcasts, TV, radio, and print media. 50% of the collection will support this national programming. The other 50% of the collection will remain at the parish to support local communication efforts, such as website technology and bulletins.

MOTHER’S DAY ROSES The Foxboro/Sharon Knights of Columbus will be selling long-stem roses after the 4:30 PM Mass on May 14th and 8:30am and 10:45 AM Masses

on Sunday, May 15th. Proceeds will be donated to several Catholic organizations that assist women in crisis.

Sixth Sunday of Easter

Protecting God’s Children Training OLOS will be offering a Protecting God’s Children training on Tuesday, May 3rd from 7:30-9:30 PM in the Bullock Center. All parents and other adults in the parish who are interested in chaperoning youth ministry events, teaching or volunteering with or alongside children and youth in the parish are required to have this special train-ing. Please attend if you have not attended one of these sessions in the past.

The Sacraments of Initiation This year we will continue our local custom of celebrating First Communion at various regularly scheduled parish Masses during the Easter Season. We will celebrate First Communion at the 4:30 p.m. Masses on Saturday, May 7 and 14, and the 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Masses on Sunday, May 8 and 15.

Why celebrate First Communion during the Easter Season? Since First Communion is a sacrament of initiation, the Easter Season is an appropriate time to celebrate it as well as the other sacraments of initiation - Baptism and Confirmation. We celebrated Baptism on April 14 and will celebrate Baptism again on April 21 and 28 and Confirmation on May 13 – all in the Easter Season. The Easter Season is a joyful time to celebrate all the sacraments of initiation - Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist.

First Communion is a significant moment both for the children and their families and the whole parish community. It's a time for the whole gathered assembly to welcome these children to the Table of the Lord. We do so with great joy and invite you to join in receptions after each liturgy! May the community's active presence and participation at the Eucharistic celebrations during which the children will share for the first time at the Eucharistic Table cause all of us to reflect on the gift of the Eucharist in our own lives and in the life of our parish community.

The Special Olympics On Sunday, May 15, 2016, youth and adults in the parish will have the opportunity to volunteer at the Special Olympics Track & Field Competition at Milton Academy. We will meet as a group in the Bullock Center at 7:45 AM and travel together to Milton. Parents can plan to meet their children at 4:00 PM in the Bullock Center. Come to the OLOS Spring Town Hall! Spring Town Hall is an opportunity for our ministries and councils to report on their activities and accomplishments over the past year – and to seek ideas for the coming year. This year’s Spring Town Hall will be held Sunday, June 12th at 11:45 AM. All are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.

ECO-TIP OF THE WEEK Our faith calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves. One way to love our neighbors, especially those on the margins of society, is to become more “eco-friendly,” to consume less, conserve more and to recycle. Each week, we will provide one concrete step you can take to increase your “eco-friendly” lifestyle in keeping with our faith. As Pope Francis has written, “Men and women are still capable of intervening positively. For all our limitations, gestures of generosity, solidarity and care cannot but well up within us, since we were made for love.” (Laudato Si)

This week’s tip: Ban Bottled Water! Landfills are overflowing with over 2 million tons of discarded water bottles; only 31% of bottles are consciously thrown in the recycling, and only 10% of plastic bottles are actually recycled. It takes thousands of years for plastic particulates to decompose, and incinerating the plastic releases toxins into the atmosphere. Fill a reusable container with tap water. If you are worried about water purity, purchase a filtered water pitcher! In fact, many studies show that bottled water is no more pure than tap water. Additionally, bottled water companies do not pump water sustainably or fairly. Choose to reuse!!

We will mark and celebrate the Feast of the Ascension on May 5th. And the significance of that Feast lies in the beginning of

the Acts of the Apostles. This section of the Christian scriptures is traditionally considered to be written by St. Luke.

Luke writes that Jesus appeared and re-appeared after his resurrection for a period of 40 days. He then met with the disciples and bid them a final good-bye. He exhorted them to remain in the upper room and await the Spirit.

The Feast of the Ascension then is marked 40 days after Easter.

He ascended to heaven hidden by a cloud.

Towels Needed: The Summer Mission Car Wash Fundraiser is coming up, and in addition to volunteers (to sign up to serve at this important and fun service event, visit the “Sign Up to Serve” box on the homepage of the parish website) we need towel donations for drying cars. We are accepting used and worn towels, as long as they are clean. Beach towels, hand towels, kitchen towels, and bath towels – we want them all! Towels donations can be placed in the box labeled “Towel Donations” in the downstairs of the Bullock Center.

“GREEN PLAN” Many thanks to Malcolm J., Elaina McD., Samantha D. and Joe B. for donating their time and talent to OLOS as part of their “The Ethics and Science of Climate Change” community-based-learning class at Stonehill College. Their presentation during our Sunday Coffee Hour on April 24th was both engaging and informative. If you were unable to attend the Coffee Hour, we will have copies of their Questionnaire and “Environmental Sustainability Initiative” pamphlet available at future Coffee Hours. The Team will also be finalizing their “Green Plan” Proposal soon and sending it to our Facilities and Finance Commissions, who will work on creating a Master Plan for future actions in line with our faith mandate and budgetary limitations. We will make copies of the “Green Plan” available once we have the final version.
