Howdy,
Last weekend we celebrated Mother’s Day.
Many little children made special cards or even
a gift for their mother. It is one of the biggest
days in the restaurant business...you take mom
to dinner so she doesn’t need to cook that day.
At mass I often see mothers with flowers and
they are often more dressed up. Yes, it is a
special day.
After my mother died, this day felt a little dif-
ferent; I mean, do I go to the cemetery to visit
her? Do I sit and remember all of those memo-
ries, feeling either sad or thankful? How do I
celebrate Mother’s Day when my mother has
died? Or, do I just go on my regular way and
ignore the day? It was a little sad and confus-
ing for a while, not just on Mother’s Day but
every day.
One day I was preparing my homily and the
gospel was where Jesus, on the cross, says to
St. John, “There is your mother!” It was like
Jesus was saying it to me. Before that day I
did not have a special devotion to our Blessed
Mother; there was nothing wrong with that de-
votion but it just wasn’t necessary for me.
Now of course, our Blessed Mother is very im-
portant to me and I celebrate Mother’s Day
with great memories of my mother and thank-
ful that our Lord has given me a special mother
to be with me forever.
Pax,
Father Mike
menterio a visitarla? ¿Me siento y traigo a la
mente esos recuerdos, sintiéndome triste o
agradecido? ¿Cómo celebro el Día de las
Madres cuando mi madre ya ha muerto? O,
Paz,
Padre Mike

Totus Tuus (Latin for “totally yours) was in-
spired by Pope St. John Paul II who sought to
bring people closer to Christ through devotion
to His Blessed Mother. The program is au-
thentically Catholic-with time spent attending
daily Mass, praying the Rosary, and learning about the Faith-
and authentically fun, with games, skits, songs, sports and even
a water fight for children on the last day.
The program is run by college-aged missionaries and seminari-
ans who embody the joy and life of Gospel and who have radi-
cally given their summer to the Lord. We will also need
volunteers to bring food for the missionaries daily for lunch
and dinner.

The “glory” of God is that even in the human cir-
cumstances that seem empty of His presence and
care, God is at work to reveal His love for sinners –
to shine forth his love in all its brightness and pow-
er.
Jesus spoke about a “new” commandment of love.
The Jews had already been taught to love their
neighbors as themselves (see Lev 19:18). What is
“new” in Jesus’ teaching?
Now God’s people are to love others as Jesus loved
us—laying down His life for people who don’t de-
serve it. We are the people who don’t deserve it, yet
he still loves us. The presence of Jesus’ love in us is
how all will know that we are His disciples.
When this selfless love becomes the mark of the
Church, then “is the Son of Man glorified, and God
is glorified in Him.”
This week look for the small ways your self-denial
offered with love can be a flash of Jesus’ glory in
this world.
New Hours for Family Catechesis! Beginning in
September students K-12 will study on Sundays
