English Writing:

Dear detective,

I hope this letter finds you well. As you are aware, there has been a sharp increase in the number of missing

cats in London and Kent. At first glance, it seemed we were just getting random reports and calls. However,

after careful examination we have concluded that people are calling everyday between 5pm and 10pm. We

need this case solved because these pets are very dear to families across London and Kent and we need to

ensure that they are returned safely. We have managed to collect some evidence that you may use as clues in

your investigation.

We will need you to collect evidence as you work on this case. Could you keep a diary entry for each day you

work on this mystery? Hopefully by the end of this week you would’ve written a diary report of how you

cracked this feline fiasco!

Kind Regards

Chief Constable

Evidence collected so far.

Boxes of catnip and wooden rafts have been found near the River Medway. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that

these have been dumped here. The River Medway leads into the Thames Estuary – I wonder if there’s a link

there?

Oracy: Exploratory Talk Challenge 3

Have a discussion about these talking points and questions, thought up by OLOL children:

Why aren’t there dinosaurs anymore?

How long does it take to get from Earth to Jupiter?

Teachers should be paid more

Grown-ups and children should be treated equally

Is global warming that bad?

Coffee is bad for you

Bricks are made out of sand

Water is more harmful than helpful

Why is the sky blue?

Why does the fur of squirrels look like it is cut so neatly?

Ghosts are real

Information:

So that there is a lot to talk about, there are always rather a lot of Talking Points. Some groups become so involved

that they never get to the end of the list – and this is good! High quality talk always takes time.

Top Tips:

Use your sentence starters to build, challenge (with respect), clarify and probe each other’s ideas to come to a

shared agreement. Remember, if you cannot agree, this is not a bad thing! Remember to reflect on it positively. ‘We

found it hard to agree about....’

What to do:

Have a discussion about the talking points above. All the resources and sentence starters you need are on the Oracy

page to download, if you have not already done so.

Science (Evolution and Inheritance):

Most environments, however extreme, have some form of life in them – living things that have evolved to survive

in those conditions against the odds. We are going to explore extreme survival and the adaptations that enable

living things to thrive in such conditions.

Extreme Survivors - cut out the text boxes and photos to match the living thing to the extreme

environment

Environmental conditions Adaptation of survivor

Temperatures as high as 50⁰C Bark beetle produces a form of antifreeze

Very high mountains (over 2,500 m) where oxygen

levels are low

Sahara desert ant has long legs that keep it off

the hotter sandy floor

Very deep oceans where the pressure reaches 1000x

that of the surface. The water is freezing and it is

pitch black

Lantern fish has light producing organs and high

levels of polyunsaturated fats that help keep

the pressure inside the body the same as

outside. They also have a low metabolism.

Temperatures as low as -58⁰C Andean people living high in the mountains

have greater lung capacity and their blood can

carry a greater volume of oxygen than people at

lower altitudes.

Areas of frequent bush fires Tardigrades can switch off their metabolism

and wait for conditions to improve!

• Dry places with no water

• Freezing to -272.8 °C

• Heating to 151 °C

• Pressure six times as great as that felt at the

bottom of the deepest ocean

Doses of X-ray and gamma radiation that are

lethal to other life forms

Ceanothus bushes have heat resistant seeds

and need fire for germination – they even have

flammable resins on their leaves that would

seem to encourage fires! The leaves have high

levels of nutrients that are released when they

are burnt. The Ceanothus regrows. The leaves

are designed to avoid water loss and

desiccation.
