The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity — Father, Son, Holy Spirit Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Week of June 7, 2020 Listen to the Word (2nd Corinthians 13:11-13) As you hear this reading, what single line from St. Paul touches your heart? What is there in this reading that really speaks to your soul? Look into your life Question for children: When people love each other, how do they treat each other? Question for youth: Growing as a teen, how would you make sure to include the characteristics of a loving community in your relationships? The Trinity is celebrated today. How would you describe your rela-tionship with God the Father? With Jesus? With the Spirit? Question for adults: If you were to encourage the members of your own parish to live as a “community of love,” which is how we define the Trinity, how would you advise them to live? Use St. Paul’s list of exhortations as your starting point. Activities for the week: Take these activities to further reflect: Remind your family of God’s presence as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, by starting a family tradition of blessing family members before they go to bed at night by tracing the Sign of the Cross on their forehead and blessing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Invite your family or household members to talk about the char-acteristics of a household in which people would want to live. What would it be like? How would people behave? How would this household treat strangers, or the poor, or others in need? Remind everyone that such a household is very close to what the Trinity is: a community of love. Trinity Sunday offers an excellent opportunity to call attention to the use of the Sign of the Cross and the prayer that we say when we make the Sign of the Cross. Teach the very young this sign and prayer. Talk to your family about the need to say the prayer with meaning. Pray the “Doxology” prayer. Use this prayer as part of your family night prayer:

Glory to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be forever. Amen.

MYSTERY There is a well-known story of a teacher who was talking with his students about mystery. “Think of a rose,” he said. Everyone in the room could imagine a rose. “Can you think of the fragrance of a rose?” All heads nodded. “Can you describe that fragrance to me?” No one could. That’s what mystery is. Something that we know to be true, but is beyond our powers to describe fully. In centuries past, most people lived with mystery more easily, but our modern minds want “just the facts,” and we feel uneasy about anything we cannot easily understand. Today we celebrate the feast of the Holy Trinity—one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In the two thousand-year history of the Church many saints, teachers, and theologians have described the Trinity in long and eloquent prose, but no one can ever arrive at a final definition because the nature of the Trinity is too great to be pinned down in human words. The scriptures show us hints in the actions of the one God as Father, Son, and Spirit, and contain many references to the relationship among the three as one. And we learn from Jesus’ words to his disciples, recorded in the Gospels, that there is one savior and one salvation, given to us in Jesus Christ himself, which is open to us through the Holy Spirit. Saint Paul calls us the Body of Christ and says that we, as believers, are in relationship with God—equally called, equally chosen, equally loved. Yet within that equality, God has given each of us different gifts, different abilities, and different callings in life. This month marks a transition for some to the resumption of public liturgies, at least in some limited form. For others, the pandemic response requires continued suspension of public liturgies. For all, the consequences of the coronavirus and economic impact of the need to shelter in place are being felt. In the midst of this, we also transition to Ordinary Time. In this month’s issue of Impact, we explore the importance of presence, the preciousness of every person, our call to lose our lives for the sake of God and others, and reflect on our call to sacred, holy time.
