The O Antiphons — Las Antifonas de la O

The “O Antiphons” refer to the seven antiphons that are chanted or recited preceding the Magnificat during Vespers of the Liturgy of the Hours. They cover the special period of Advent preparation known as the Octave before

Christmas, December 17 — 23, with December 24 being Christmas Eve and Vespers for that evening being for the Vigil for the Solemnity of Christmas. The importance of the “O Antiphons” is twofold because each one highlights a

title for the Messiah and each one also refers to the prophecy of Isaiah of the coming of the Messiah.

Las “Antífonas de la O" se refieren a las siete antífonas que se cantan o recitan antes de la Magnifica en las Víspe-ras de la Liturgia de las Horas. God’s kingdom is close — it is Jesus Third Sunday of Advent Week of December 15, 2019 Listen to the Word (Isaiah 35:1 – 6a, 10) As you hear the words of the prophet, what words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart? Look into your life Question for children: Why is Christmas such a time of happiness for people? Question for youth: God speaks to you every day: Isaiah tells us our ears and eyes will be opened in Christ to hear God’s voice. What do you hear God saying to you? Question for adults: What is there in this promise from the Prophet Isaiah that gives you hope? How have you seen this promise fulfilled in Christ? Activities for the week Take these activities to further reflect: Discuss with your family what it means to live as a follow-er of Jesus in the world today. Using the newspaper, dis-cuss for each major story how a Christian would respond. What would Jesus do in each situation? Prepare for Christmas by talking together about family members who have been influential in your lives. Go through the family album and point out pictures of people who are good role models of Christian living. Tell their sto-ries to your family. Discuss which of them has brought the light of Christ into your lives this year. Take a plant, perhaps an amaryllis bulb to a homebound person or a nursing home resident. Visit the person often during the Advent season, and together watch the plant grow and bloom for Christmas. You and the flower will both be signs of God’s reign of love in our midst.
