Around A.D. 400, the Christian church formally established the season of Lent. It begins with Ash Wednesday (2-26-20), which is 40 days (not including Sundays) before Easter. The word “Lent” means lengthen and it is also an old English word for spring. In spring the day’s get longer, brighter and warmer. We experience new life everywhere in nature. What a great connection to the new life we as Christians have in Jesus. Early Christians were very penitent during Lent. People were somber, strictly fasted for the whole 40 days and even wore sackcloth, a rough fabric like burlap. The official Lenten regulations are; Abstinence: On days of abstinence eating meat is not allowed. Catholics in the United States are obliged to abstain on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Self-imposed observance of fasting on all weekdays of Lent is strongly recommended, as is abstinence from meat on all Fridays of the year. Fasting: On a day of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together, they should not equal the other full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are permitted. The obligation of fasting binds Catholics who are 18-59 years old. The obligation of abstinence applies to those 14 years and older. The law does not oblige when health or ability to work would be seriously affected. OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE CATHOLIC PARISH March 2020 During Lent, talk about how as a family, you want to grow closer to God. Explain that during this time, each member of the family gives up and takes on habits that will help them be better people. Family Faith Sunday

November 3rd

“Let’s dive into the Ten Commandments – How do we live a joy-filled life through the gift of the Ten Commandments, firmly grounded in

God’s Word”. The Ten Commandments are important to our lives as Catholics. The Commandments reflect the covenant God made with the ancient Israelites. The Commandments helped to keep the Israelites faithful in their relationships with God, and they do the same for us today. They form a foundation of wisdom for everything in the Bible and flow from the heart and mind of God and contain eternal wisdom, insight, and understanding concerning God and our relationship with Him. The Ten Commandments touch on two relationships. They tell us of our relationship with God and with our neighbor.

Family Faith Sunday is a multi-generational program where parents/guardians and their children

(K-8th) gather to pray, play and share their faith in community with other families in a fun way!

Patron Saint of Immigrants Saint Frances Cabrini’s Story:

Can you imagine what it would be like to have 12 brothers and Sisters? I was the youngest of thirteen children. I was weak I was born, so my parents took me to be baptized immediately. My father often read stories about missionaries to us. As I Played, I pretended my dolls were missionaries. I dreamed of becoming a missionary. When I was thirteen, I attended a private school. After I graduated, I tried to become a sister in hoped I would eventually go to China. Because I was not well, the sisters told me “no.” Smallpox broke out in the village and my parents died. Soon I caught the disease. My sister Rosa nursed me until I was well. I was hired to take care of orphans. Six other women helped me run the orphanage. These women and I began a new religious order. We became the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Our religious community traveled to the United States. A very generous lady bought us a home, and we opened an orphanage. We Also opened schools and a hospital. The sisters and I were preparing for a Christmas party. I was putting candy in little bags for the children, when I had a heart attack and died. I was the first American citizen to be made a saint.

Fun fact about Mother Cabrini: St. James Cathedral in Seattle is where Mother Cabrini prayed and attended Mass. She

had a great presence in Seattle, between 1903 and 1916 and her statue is in the right

On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month the Armistice (truce) was signed. World War 1 was called, “the war to end all wars.”

God-Sharing Moments with the Family

Future Saints!

Have your children take turns tracing each other as they lay down on a large sheet of rolled paper. Each child cuts out their own outline and adds their names, facial features, hair etc. With adult help, have the children draw or write posive atributes about themselves on the cutouts. Magazine pictures can also be used. Hang the completed life-size prints on a large wall in your home. Label the display “Future Saints”, or “On the Way to Sainthood”.
