Dear Parishioners Of Our

Lady of Grace,

Thank you to those who made special donations of time and treasure recently to beautify the Church and grounds. You are a praise of God’s glory and a help to the local poor who, because of

you, enjoy the beauty of worshiping in a beautiful place and can approach that place with the benefit of beautiful grounds.

We have new mikes coming that will be easier to turn on and off. These extra mikes will also make things better at the cantor stands, eulogy possibilities, music worship possibilities, even prayer possibilities, and Triduum possibilities. Visiting priests, especially elderly priests, will be more easily able to help if they are needed as well. If you would like to be the benefactor of these new mikes please let me know.

In the St. Thomas Aquinas Club, we have been going over the doctrine of God. Knowing what is knowable about God, by reason alone, is one of the things that we have been discussing. It is the case that, by reason alone, we know that God is one, he has all possible perfections, he is all good, and indeed he is love. This means, since he is being itself and is the one and only origin of all that is, that everything is sustained in being and created by him and everything is good and or at least redeemable.

It doesn’t seem to match with Scripture, you might think. For example, God seems to be talked out of bad ideas a few times in the Old Testament and it seems like he undoes mistakes that he makes, as in the

flood. However, we have to read the whole Bible. The Bible explains these seeming inconsistencies by saying that God reveals himself gradually and in strange and varied ways. Indeed, because of our immaturity, he revealed himself in the beginning of the Bible in primitive ways that were beginnings. We have the first reading in the Bible today from the Old Testament, stating clearly the truth we know by reason alone, that everything comes from God, as we say in the Creed; all things visible and invisible. Evil, then, is no competition for God. It is a disordering of good, and is not a positive thing in itself.

The goodness of Zacchaeus shines brightly. Rev. Mark Brockmeier, points out that Christ’s showing that this man whom everyone thinks is evil, is rather, not only not evil, but remarkably good, does not end with everyone then rejoicing and agreeing with Christ, but rather, Scripture is characteristically silent on the crowd’s response. I think it is the case that we commonly think of ourselves as a mix of good and bad but tend to give ourselves a break and easily make excuses for ourselves (some don’t, and do the opposite, so I am not talking to you all right now.) We are easily outraged at evil in others and slow to see good in others. We are upset when we see a person as dramatically and publicly evil and are almost happy to gang up with evil opinions against that one and to imagine that the evil is irredeemable and no good is left. This is impossible though. God doesn’t make evil. There is nothing that is, except what he made.

When Christ points this out, the tables turn. We see the evil in us clearly and that is stunning. In the end, however, (seeing that God loves us anyway because he is good, not because we are) we are just full of praise, for God is good.

In Christ,

Fr. Jeremy St. Martin

Dear Pepperell Church Families,

My name is Becky Torpey and I am the Coordinator for the Salvation Army Bell ringers. The Salvation Amy helps many Pepperell residents each year. Last year we did over $3,000 of assistance for families in need. That’s why the bell ringing is so important! The money we collect during the holiday season goes directly to our towns outreach program! The more money we collect the more families we can help! Starting November 29th and ringing through December 24th we will need your help to fill our kettles. There are several times to choose from. You can do as many hours as you like or one hour. No matter what you can do we appreciate your service and your time! Bell ringing times are Friday evening from 4-8, and all day Saturday and Sunday. Students and staff can ring individually or as a group. You can sing Holiday Carols or just wish the community a Merry Christmas! This is a fantastic opportunity to get into the holiday spirit! If we have inspired you please call the Pepperell Senior Center with the days and times that you would like to participate! Again, thank you for your consideration and continued support!

978-433-0326 Have a fantastic year!

Christmas is a time for giving, and this year, like so many years before, our parish will provide lots of opportunities for you to reach out to those who are less fortunate. Our “Christmas Giving Trees,” located at the entrances of both the St. James and St. Joseph Churches will be filled with “ornaments,” beginning the First Sunday of Advent, December 1st. (pending we have received requests). You are invited and encouraged to take the special ornament tag with you, as you leave church, and to pick up the gift/gifts, as indicated on the tag, for someone in

need. Some ornaments have a special tag attached, requesting your name and contact information. Your cooperation in filling out this tag and depositing it into the containers to be found nearby is crucial to the project, since those tags represent gifts that are targeted for specific families, and we must have a way of tracking, should any follow-up be required.

Who: There are a few groups that our parish will be serving this year. The first is LUK, a social service agency that helps children in the Fitchburg area. Also, Seven Hills in Groton and CESI Day care in West Groton. In addition, there are many families in need, right here in PEPPERELL and parents have asked for help in getting Christmas gifts for their children. Anyone who feels the need is welcome to fill out a request form (found at the rectory, PACH or parish website to request this aid.) The forms ask for the first name and age of each child in the home, and there is a place to list gift requests - ($25. value/each).

When: Tags will decorate the trees, beginning the weekend of the First Sunday of Advent, including the 4 PM

Mass. (pending we receive requests) We can’t put out tags if we don’t have requests! Please keep this in mind. Tags go on the tree as soon as the request comes in.

Due Date: Your wrapped gift, with attached ornament is due back on the weekend of December 21/22. This is a critical date, because a party is planned for the children at LUK, where Santa will give the children your gift! Also, this date is set for sorting and packing of the gifts. It is also very close the the distribution of the gifts to the families on Dec 23rd so you can see why it’s important to have these back as soon as your gift is purchased. Please make every effort to bring your gift back to the tree of origin (i.e. if you took a tag from St. Joseph’s, please return gift there; if your ornament originated at St. James, please return your gift to the tree located there). This will be a great help to all who are sorting, packing and driving the gifts to the different locations. If it is just impossible for you to bring the gift to its tree of origin on the weekend, you are welcome to drop it by at the rectory/office during the week. The office is open from 9 AM – 5 PM.- Monday through Friday.

How You Can Help: If you are interested in getting involved with this project, there are many ways for you to help:

Over three hundred gifts arrive at the churches and need to be sorted and packed for delivery. Also, since many packages are intended for LUK in Fitchburg, we need help in transporting them there. It is

especially helpful if you have a large car, van or truck.

Like to shop? There are always some gift tags that are left behind on our trees, yet the children whose names are on them, are waiting in anticipation. Would you be willing to take some of the tags (cash will be provided) and shop for the toys/clothes/gifts needed? (Note: This shopping is rather “last minute,” when it becomes clear that there are left- over tags that no one is picking up, and it gets closer and closer to the holiday.

Finally – If you are unable to participate in any of the ways described above, but would like to be a part of this parish endeavor, your cash gift is always most welcome.! As noted, above, there are always some gifts that need to be purchased at the end. We cannot do this without your generosity!

Please contact either Dottie Zale at # 978-448-6517 or [email protected] (for LUK and RiverCourt Residences)

or Carol Fennell at # 978-433-5237 or [email protected] ( for St. Joseph’s Pepperell residents) if you can help in any way….and THANK YOU!!!
