Twelve years have passed as your Deacon serving each of you, the parishioners of Our Lady of Grace. Twelve years is like starting first grade to graduating high school. The years were an education. What you all have taught me on this my journey as a deacon. The spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral aspects in diaconal studies form the man into
holiness, makes the man prayerful but do not create a deacon. Only when the man is ordained does he become a deacon. Only through the deacon’s service to the people of God transform him into a deacon. I have come to learn during my twelve-year journey as your Deacon, our humanity— weakness, struggles, loneliness, desires, and questions of faith-- leads all of us together closer to Christ. You, the parishioners of Our Lady of Grace, the people of God, made me the Deacon I am today. You are my gift from Christ. For that, I am truly blessed and thankful. A deacon is a man who is called to a ministry of service. Like bishops and priests, he receives the Sacrament of Holy Orders, but he is not called to service in his home parish. I was fortunate to minister in my home parish for the past twelve years—the parish where I received all seven sacraments. I am called by the Bishop to service throughout the diocese. I am among the people of the parish. Still, I have been called forth as a deacon to live the Christian life visibly in not only Our Lady of Grace Parish but also the Archdiocese of Boston. With a thankful spirit but a heavy heart, I am not saying "goodbye," I am only saying, "so long for now, and I will see you again soon." After twelve years, Cecily and I have decided to move on. Father Ed Derosier, the Pastor of Saint Mary's in Ayer, and Saint Anthony's in Shirly, is the only clergy in the Nashoba Catholic Collaborative. Through prayer and discernment, I believe the Holy Spirit is leading me to assist Father Ed as the Deacon for the Nashoba Catholic Collaborative. I express my sincere gratitude to the pastors and ministers of Sacred Heart/Saint James, Saint Joseph's, and Our Lady of Grace. First, Father Bob Butler and Sister Roberta, who both cultivated the seed to the diaconate some twenty years ago. As a new deacon assigned the challenge of two parishes, then merged both into one faith community with Father Paul Ring. No better mentorship from a pastor can a new deacon experience in the first assignment. Father Mike Bova Conti, how in a short time, showed me the universal call to holiness. Father Bob Poitras, how prayerful discernment, pastoral communication, and pastoral care showed
intelligently in the liturgy and homilies bonding us into a spiritual community. Father Jason, how we became competitors. After my first homily with Father Jason, as the Celebrant, he called me his nemesis. From that moment, just between us, began our joyful jousting with each other—the competition on who can deliver the best homily. Father Jason did raise my delivery to another level, as I lifted his storytelling (I learned a new skill—reading Father Jason's hieroglyphics). Father Jeremy for his care, sense of humor, open heart, and acceptance of me as a deacon. I pray for Father Jeremy's priesthood, and dedication to Our Lord Jesus Christ, and His Church as he leads Our Lady of Grace as Administrator/Pastor. The past and present ministers' love for the Church has increased my love for the Church, its people. The music ministers, choir, cantors, and especially John and Ellen Blackwell's leadership—all enriched our experience of worship by amplifying the Word of God with music to provide beauty to the liturgy. Your music touched this Deacon. All involved in evangelization—teachers, baptismal team members, ushers, lectors, eucharistic ministers, liturgical coordinators, and others too numerous to mention-- goes out a sincere thank-you. You have no way of knowing how all your actions re-energized this Deacon. Finally, the staff of Our Lady of Grace—Cotty, Debbie, Robert, and Patrick, as daily we ministered to the parishioners with warmth, humor, the compassion of Our Lord and Savior. Bidding goodbye to you who have been more than friends is tough. I will miss each of you, and I will miss our morning coffee together. I pray and hope that Cecily and my presence among you demonstrated the Christian life of prayer and faith in imitation of Christ himself who came not to be served but to serve. Thank you for an incredible twelve years. I pray that you are open to the voice of Christ as he guides you on your journey of faith. I leave you with the dismissal found in The Christian Prayer-book. "May the Lord bless you, protect you from all evil and bring you to everlasting life." Peace in Christ, Deacon Mike

Sunday Reading Reflection
In the living word of God we read in the cycle of Sunday Readings our Lord, the Word of God, speaks to us. He tells us something very particular. The worker is worth his wage. This indeed applies to the ministers of the Church who he forms and puts into place when he established it.
This particular reality is again and again pointed out in the Old and New Testemtnt.
However there is also a caution in the sacred scriptures and it is also in tradition, those words through which God continues to speak in the world today. It is characterized by St. Thomas in the middle ages well, when he, in the Summa, discusses the topic of remuneration of clergy in the 7th Commandment, prohibiting stealing. He says, as Christ does today, that we should support our clergy. He tells us that our eternal salvation is bound up in it. Our own blessings are prefigured in the Old Testement, with our joyful fulfilling of supporting people who are setup as ministers of God’s word and blessing.
St. Thomas goes on to say however, that a minister who takes one penny more than what he needs is a thief.
This is so emphisized by Pope Benedict in his own example of detachment.
Living a life of detachment and sim-plicity; living a life of “Gospel Poverty” is great and truth to be told is not rough and painful.
Living simply and with detachment means that we live a life of enjoyment of the arts. Art is beauty and culture. It is our joy sometimes to enjoy the beauty of a watch or a car or a truck or a boat or architecture or landscaping or music.
I think that some think Christ wants us to be “cheep” and “miserly.” No. When we have more we need to produce beauty.
Being simple means using every bit of everything we are given to glory God by bringing about his kingdom here on Earth as much as possible.
We should never horde money or tallents. We need to use everything for
beauty and art and glory and joy and happiness. If we don’t we will never lift the depressed from their poverty and we will spip in there ourselves.
Christ tells us to give the priests and deacons a cup of water. But what is more, he want it to be “cool.” Cool water in Christ’s day and age was quite a delicacy. It was almost impossible to get and he said even if you give a low ranking cleric one of these rare delights you would get to heaven in a most excellent way. Good that you all support me so well. It means you are definitely getting great reward in the eternal kingdom to come. If I take more than I should however, I am a thief. The way is narrow and it is harder for me than you. Fr. Jeremy St. Martin
Other Stuff. Good News! Good News! Good News! There are so many good things happening. We are finally having things come back to some normality. Many of the faithful are gathering again at Mass on Sunday, daily Mass, for weddings, baptisms, and funerals. Some of the Fraternal Charitable Organization in our area are getting together and we have some of our clubs and youth groups getting together. Evening Prayer is starting again in the Church and we started trying to chant it. We have our St. J’s Collaborative open house youth group fire. We are starting STAC again. The ASL club is now meeting again. There are some of the confirmation kids who are organizing themselves into a group who will help clean up our Catholic Cemetary. There was a wonderful visit recently from Fr. Paul Ring to celebrate the Rights of Christian Burrial for the repose of the soul of Peter Buckjune, Pat Buckjune’s husband. It was wonderful to see how Patrick Connolly and Deacon Mike Markham, together with Ellen Blackwell, our Music Director worked together to make this time of prayer and support such a powerful expression of faithfulness and love.
The good news doesn’t stop there by any means. In fact, there is no way I could fit it all in many books. It has been great to see friendships in Christ growing. We have some scholarships coming together for people going to college. We have a quickbooks expert
from the parish volunteering to help me with that, we have some new and improved Religious Educaiton, Baptismal Prep, and Marriage Prep programs that fit more with what is really needed in our own day and age emerging. A lady named Pam, from a company that publishes catechisms might be able to make us a custom one even. It would be so nice to have a little song or two that all the kids learn by heart so that when we are at Mass we can sing by heart. This happened so nicely at the 3:00 p.m. Mass at St. Jame’s last Sunday. There were a group of people who set up their chairs in the shade almost behind the altar and I could hear them singing Holy God We praise Thy Name, by heart, at the end and it was great! It was so prayerful and such a great witness to the world, a demonstration of positive love, not of being so much against this or that (except the devil and sin) but most of all a praise of the Good God!
We also have the tech at the parishes improving. There have been a lot of people donating their time (and I mean hours) and their treasure, to make the pa systems at the Church’s work. It is getting better and I am grateful for the goodness of so many working so hard behind the scenes.
There are still confirmation interviews going on online and they continue to be some of the most interesting I have ever known. Your prayers for the con-version of your children and grandchildren is working. Your prayers for the perseverance of your parents and grandparents in the faith needs to increase.
The young need to take over the world and run it. If they don’t all is lost. The youth need to establish families and become leaders in the Church and the World. A 15 year old who studies history was recently informing me of the age of leaders in history. Fascinating stuff. Please say a special prayer for a man named David who is sick and in distress. The quarantine effects are complicating an already complicated situation for him and those who love him. I pray, that Jesus, the invisible high priest, will go and visit him now and give him every grace and blessing; that he will find comfort. Fr. Jeremy St. Martin
