IMPORTANT Hospital Information: If you are going to the hospital, please speak to the receptionist at the church and let them know when you will be admitted and what hospital you are going to. It would also be very helpful if we knew your room number. Federal Privacy Regulation – HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), prohibits all hospitals from informing churches of a patient’s presence unless the patient gives permission for the hospital to do so.

4 Celebrating our Diversity August 12, 2018

Time to Welcome We were welcomed when we came to Our Lady of Grace and now it is our turn to welcome new members. The Discipleship Committee is only asking for about 15 minutes after Mass once a month. Our goal is to have one or two people or a family be present at our Welcome Table. You would hand them our welcome bag and possibly answer any questions they may have. If we can form 4 “teams” for each Mass it would be wonderful. Please call the office or sign up at the table if you are willing to help and at what Mass.

6 Celebrating our Diversity August 12, 2018

From the Pastor’s Desk Beloved, as agents of evangelization, we always need to be conscious we are not doing it on our own; we are not alone (cf. Matt 28:20; 1Cor 1:17). This shows the importance of the HOLY SPIRIT in evangelization: Christ ministered in the power of the Holy Spirit (cf. Luke 4:18-19) and gave the Holy Spirit to His Apostles. The apostles

understood themselves as witnessing in the Holy Spirit (cf. Acts 5:32; 13:2-4; 15:28; Rom 8:9). The Church’s mission of evangelization did not commence without the sending forth in Spirit at Pentecost: “. . . stay in the city, until you are clothed with power from on high” (Luke 24:49). Accordingly, Pope Paul VI writes, “Evangelization will never be possible without the action of the Holy Spirit . . . In fact, it is only after the coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost that the apostles depart to all the ends of the earth in order to begin the great work of the Church's evangelization. . . The Holy Spirit is the soul of the Church. It is He who explains to the faithful the deep meaning of the teaching of Jesus and of His mystery . . . The Holy Spirit places on his lips the words which he could not find by himself, and at the same time the Holy Spirit predisposes the soul of the hearer to be open and receptive to the Good News and to the kingdom being proclaimed;” hence, the importance of Life in the Spirit Retreats, programs and seminars. INVITATIONS FOR WORSHIP: Please, evangelize by always being keen to invite family and friends to our parish. Tell them, “Come and see!” (John 1:39, 46). BIBLE VERSES FOR THE WEEK: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16); “Behold, I have graven you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me” (Isaiah 49:16). Our Catholic Appeal is still ongoing. Please, kindly continue to redeem your pledges. If you’ve not pledged, please, kindly fill out an Appeal Envelope and participate at some level to help increase our percentage participation. Thanks. Finally, please, find time to participate in the New Evangelization Charismatic Prayer and Bible Study Ministries (Tuesdays 7:00 PM or Wednesdays 10:00 AM). INVITACION PARA ADORACIÓN: Por favor, evangelicen siempre invitando a familiares y amigos a nuestra parroquia, diciendo: "¡Vengan y vean!" (Juan 1:39, 46).

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: Ss. Pontian and Hippolytus Tuesday: St. Maximilian Kolbe Wednesday: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Thursday: St. Stephen of Hungary Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary

LOS SANTOS Y OTRAS CELEBRACIONES Domingo: Decimonoveno Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Lunes: San Ponciano y San Hipólito Martes: San Maximiliano Kolbe Miércoles: La Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María Jueves: San Esteban de Hungría Sábado: Santa María Virgen

St. Maximilian Kolbe—August 14 was a Franciscan friar who volunteered to die in place of a stranger in the German death camp of Auschwitz, located in German-occupied Poland during World War II. He was active in promoting the veneration of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, founding and supervising the monastery of Niepokalanów near Warsaw, operating an amateur radio station (SP3RN), and founding or running several other organizations and publications. Kolbe was canonized on 10 October 1982 by Pope John Paul II, and declared a Martyr of charity. He is the patron saint of amateur radio operators, drug addicts, political prisoners, families, journalists, prisoners, and the pro-life movement. John Paul II declared him "The Patron Saint of Our Difficult Century".

Discipleship asks us to assess our gifts and make a decision on what parts will be the “first fruits” we return to God through the Church and through others.

STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE Today we resume the “Bread of Life” discourse from John’s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes refer-ence to the Jews’ ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life—a marvelous promise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
