REMEMBERING

OUR PAST Part II

We are only 4 weeks away from our Grand Jubilee Mass with Bishop Michael Barber on July 10th. This special Mass will be cele-

brated at 10:00AM. Please remind your friends and family that our regularly scheduled Sunday Masses at 8:30am, 11:00am and the Polish Mass at 12:30 will be merged into this one big celebration at 10:00am.

This week, we continue to share some recollec-

tions and reflections about the history of our Parish. To-day we publish the personal reflections and experiences of our long time parishioner, PAT OCASION.

“We came to the parish in 1970 after we bought

our house in the neighborhood. The first thing I noticed in the church was the

friendliness of the people. Smiles and handshakes were freely given. There were even greeters in the vestibule welcoming people. After Mass, coffee and donuts were served to socialize and meet other parishioners. So I decided to be involved in various activities in the church. I was a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, a CCD teacher, Choir member, Acolyte and Parish Council member.

I noticed too that there was a lot of fund raising

going on. I got involved in that too. I remember cooking in the big kitchen preparing for corned beef cabbage dinners or spaghetti dinners served during the New Year's Eve dance.

All events were held inside the church. Accordi-

on divider if front of the altar was rolled out and it was converted to become a hall. We enjoyed the camarade-rie preparing for the events and the clean up afterwards. Everybody helped, men and women alike.

I also remember frying lumpias in front of the

church to sell during the Bake Sale events. Parishioners donated baked goods and together with the lumpias, we were selling after each Mass. We even sold cookbooks one year. Parishioners shared their favorite recipes and were all compiled in a book. These books were sold to parishioners, family members and friends.

After the rugs and pews were installed, we rented Saint Leander and Saint Felicitas church halls for big dances to raise funds for building the OLGC hall. We even did census one year going from house to house to find parishioners.

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: St. Anthony of Padua Tuesday: Flag Day Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary

Not being able to walk without a walker I have slowed down. I am still in the choir, money counting group and helping in the gift shop. I really en-joy being in the community. It fulfills my spiritual and social needs.”

Requesting Your Prayers

Q. Can divorced individuals become godparents or sponsors for baptism and confirmation?

A. If the person in question is living a life in keep-ing with the Church’s expectations for someone in that situation, yes. On the other hand, if the person does not have a Church annulment and is in a romantic relationship or has attempted remarriage outside the Church, then that person is not living "a life of faith that befits the role to be undertaken [i.e., bap-tismal or confirmation sponsor]," as required by canon law (CIC 874), and so another candidate for the role should be chosen Q. Why were God's commandments limited to ten? It seems that the additions of “Thou shall not rape,” “Thou shall not condone slavery,” and “Thou shall not abuse children” would all be appropriate additions to the list.

A. There are only ten commandments in the Old Testament because those commandments are a synthesis of the natural law. Other sins are classified by moral theologians under the existing Old Testament commandments. The additions you suggest would fit in various places under commandments 4–10, which deal with how to treat other peo-ple. (Matt. 25:32–33) and they are saved by the blood that he shed for them (Matt. 26:28).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week’s “Treasure” no doubt raised an eyebrow or two with the image of the deacons scurrying through the streets of Rome, or perhaps galloping on horseback, with fragments of eucharistic bread from the bishop’s liturgy. These would be dropped into the chalice at outlying celebrations, presided over by presbyters, to express unity with the bishop, and perhaps also to remind the presbyters that they were not free agents. The Council of Laodicea forbade the custom of the fermentum in the year 348. Generally, one of the rules of interpreting law is that people don’t make laws about things that aren’t happen-ing. So, by mid-fourth century, we have an important clue that what had once been a Roman custom had become widespread. Interestingly, when the Church of England (and its related bodies) went through a liturgical renewal in the mid-nineteenth century, they reclaimed this custom from the mists of history. Today, it is the custom in some Anglican dioceses for a frag-ment of the host from the bishop’s Holy Week liturgy (what we call the Chrism Mass) to be carried to every parish. On “Maundy Thursday” (our Holy Thursday), the fragment is dropped into the chalice to signify the parish’s communion with the bishop. This modern revival of the fermentum is dif-ferent from the “co-mingling” action we are used to, in which a fragment of the consecrated bread is dropped into the chalice just before Communion.
