Our Lady of Fatima September 28, 2019

Lázaro y el Rico La Parábola de “Lázaro y el hombre rico” esta dirigida a los fariseos, y a todos los que como ellos ponen su seguridad en el dinero y se desentienden de los demás. Cuando Jesús dice que no se puede servir a Dios y al dinero, los fariseos, que ‘eran amigos del dinero’, se burlan de Él. Jesús los confronta: “Ustedes quieren pasar por hombres de bien ante la gente, pero Dios conoce sus corazones; porque, en realidad, lo que parece valioso para los hombres es despreciable para Dios” y les cuenta la parábola: “Había un hombre rico, que bestia de púrpura y telas finas y banqueteaba espléndidamente cada día. Y un mendigo, llamado Lázaro, yacía a la entrada de su casa, cubierto de llagas ansiando llenarse con las sobras que caían de la mesa del rico.” Con esta historia, Jesús pretende abrir los ojos y el corazón a esos que, como el hombre rico, están encerrados en sus lujos y no son capaces de mirar a los que están cubiertos de llagas y con el estomago vació. Llama la atención, por otro lado, que el pobre, que por lo general es anónimo en la historia, aquí tiene un nombre propio: Lázaro (Dios ha traído ayuda). Y el rico, el importante (que debía tener un apellido prestigioso), no tiene nombre. Esta vuelta de tuerca no es una novedad. Maria ya había anunciado esta cuando rezo el Magnifica: “Derribo de sus tronos a los poderosos y engrandeció a los humildes. Colmo de bienes a los hambrientos y a los ricos despidió sin nada” Jesús, en su Sermón del Monte, también ya lo había dicho: “Dichosos los pobres porque de ustedes es el reino de Dios. Dichosos los que ahora tiene hambre, porque Dios lo saciara. . . ¡Ay de ustedes, los ricos, porque ya han recibido su consuelo! ¡Ay de los que ahora están satisfechos, porque tendrán hambre!” De múltiples modos, el Evangelio nos dice que los últimos son los primeros, que hay que tener cuidado con las riquezas, que la alegría esta en el dar y en el compartir. Que esta parábola, dirigida especialmente a los fariseos, nos ayude también a nosotros a ver si estamos viviendo el Evangelio en cuanto a la solidaridad con los más pobres. Salmo Responsorial: 145 ¡Alaba, Alma mia, al Señor!

Lazarus and the Rich man The Parable of "Lazarus and the rich man" is addressed to the Pharisees, and to all who like them put their security in money and disregard others. When Jesus says that God and money cannot be served, the Pharisees, who were 'friends of money', make fun of Him. Jesus confronts them: “You want to go through good men before people, but God knows your hearts because, in reality, what seems valuable to men is despicable to God ”and tells them the parable: “There was a rich man, who dressed in purple and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. And a beggar, named Lazarus, lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man's table.” With this story, Jesus intends to open his eyes and heart to those who, like the Rich man, they are locked in their luxuries and are not able to look at those who are covered with sores and with an empty stomach. It is striking, on the other hand, that the poor, who is usually anonymous in history, here has a proper name: Lazarus (God has brought help). And the rich, the important one (who should have a prestigious last name), has no name. This twist is not a novelty. Maria had already announced this when she prayed the Magnifica: “He has put down the mighty from their thrones and lisfted up the lowly. The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty.” Jesus, in his Sermon on the Mount, had already said it:“ Blessed are the poor because theirs is the kingdom of God. Blessed are those who are hungry now, because God will satisfy him. . . Woe to you, the rich, because they have already received their comfort! Woe to those who are satisfied now, because they will be hungry! ” In many ways, the Gospel tells us that the last are the first, that we must be careful with riches, that joy is in giving and sharing. May this parable, especially directed to the Pharisees, also help us to see if we are living the Gospel in terms of solidarity with the poorest Responsorial Psalm: 146 Praise the Lord, my soul!

On Oct. 4, Roman Catholics celebrate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the Italian deacon who brought renewal to the Church through his decision to follow Jesus' words as literally as possible.

In a January 2010 general audience, Pope Benedict XVI recalled this “giant of holiness” as a “great saint and a joyful man,” who taught the Church that “the secret of true happiness” is “to become saints, close to God.”

The future Saint Francis was born on an uncertain date in the early 1180s, one of the several children born to the wealthy merchant Pietro Bernardone and his wife Pica. He originally received the name Giovanni (or John), but became known as Francesco (or Francis) by his father's choice.

Unlike many medieval saints, St. Francis was neither studious nor pious in his youth. His father's wealth gave him access to a lively social life among the upper classes, where he was known for his flashy clothes and his readiness to burst into song. Later a patron of peacemakers, he aspired to great military feats in his youth and fought in a war with a rival Italian city-state.

A period of imprisonment during that conflict turned his mind toward more serious thoughts, as did a recurring dream that suggested his true “army” was not of this world. He returned to Assisi due to illness in 1205, and there began consider a life of voluntary poverty.

Three major incidents confirmed Francis in this path. In Assisi, he overcame his fear of disease to kiss the hand of a leper. Afterward, he made a pilgrimage to Rome, where he deposited his money at Saint Peter's tomb and exchanged clothes with a beggar. Soon after he returned home, Francis heard Christ tell him in a vision: “Go, Francis, and repair my house, which as you see is falling into ruin.”

Francis began to use his father's wealth to restore churches. This led to a public quarrel in which the cloth-merchant's son removed his clothing and declared that he had no father except God. He regarded himself as the husband of “Lady Poverty,” and resolved to serve Christ as “a herald of the Great King.”

During the year 1208, the “herald” received the inspiration that would give rise to the Franciscan movement. At Mass one morning, he heard the Gospel reading in which Christ instructed the apostles to go forth without money, shoes, or extra clothing. This way of life soon became a papally-approved rule, which would attract huge number of followers within Francis' own lifetime.

Through his imitation of Christ, Francis also shared in the Lord's sufferings. He miraculously received Christ's wounds, the stigmata, in his own flesh during September of 1224. His health collapsed over the next two years, a “living sacrifice” made during two decades of missionary preaching and penance.

St. Francis of Assisi died on Oct. 3, 1226. Pope Gregory IX, his friend and devotee, canonized him in 1228.

Permanent Deacon Candidate

This Wednesday, October 1st, at the parish of St Peter the Apostle in Parsippany, our Deacon Candidate, Gilberto Martinez, will accepted

into the ministry of the Acolyte by Bishop Arthur Serratelli as part of his formation into

the diaconate. Gilberto (Gil) has been studying at the seminary of the Immaculate Conception

at Seton Hall University for the last four years as part of his diaconate formation. The ministry of the Acolyte brings him closer to his diakonia (service) ministry. Let us keep

him and his family in our prayers so that he will continue his formation and reach his ordination as Permanent Deacon, next

summer and so that he will continue to receive the support from his family and his parish, Our Lady of Fatima.

Candidato a Diacono Permanente

El próximo Miercoles, 1o de Octubre, en la Parroquia de St. Peter the Apostle, en Parsippany,

nuestro candidato al diaconado, Gilberto Martinez, recibirá el ministerio del acolitado, por

el Obispo Arturo Serratelli, como parte de la formación hacia al diaconado. Gilberto se ha estado preparando en el seminario de la

Inmaculada Concepcion de la universidad de Seton Hall por los últimos 4 años en su formación para el diaconado. El ministerio

de Acolitado lo acerca más a este ministerio de diakonia (servicio). Tengamos presente en nuestras oraciones a este

servidor y su familia para que él se mantenga firme en su formación y llegar a su ordenación como Diacono Permanente el

próximo verano y que nunca falte el apoyo de su familia y su parroquia, Nuestra Señora de Fatima.
