Dios es ser sal y luz. Así que pudiera mencionar cientos de frases;
5th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME "You are the light of the world." Speaking to his followers, Jesus
tells them of the influence they are meant to have. Like the sea-
soning that gives food its flavor, they are to be "the salt of the
earth" and like a lamp on a lampstand that "gives light to all in the
house." Clearly, their influence on the people around them is
meant to be positive and substantial. But what is the source of this
irreplaceable influence?
Elsewhere in the Gospels, Jesus declares that HE is "the light of
the world" (cf. Jn 8:12). So when he tells his disciples that "your
light must shine before others," he is speaking about the light that
comes from following him, from believing in him, from living
their lives for him and with him. The light of Christ brightens the
world, showing us the truth and meaning of our existence. And to
the extent that we have that light in our hearts, it naturally spreads
out to impact those around us.
So, today we must ask ourselves whether or not we are shining
the way we are meant to as Christians. Do we brighten up our
families, our workplaces, our neighborhoods, and our parishes?
Are people encouraged, inspired, edified, and supported by our
presence? Do we bring the kind of flavor that enriches life with a
taste of the authentic truth, beauty, and goodness that comes from
God alone? Or have we become a bit bland, like salt that "loses its
taste" or light that is hidden "under a bushel basket"? It's impor-
tant to be on guard against any tendency to let our faith be re-
duced to a mere routine or ritual. Rather, when we nurture our
faith to be a living force that defines us and our actions, it will be
a source of joy and renewal not only for us, but for the whole
world.
Prayer for those in the Consecrated Life
God of all goodness,
you have called people to follow you faithfully.
Humans have heard that call and many choose to follow your call
in varied and faith-filled lives.
Some follow your call in private, silent lives as hermits;
some choose to follow you with lives lived as virgins and wid-
ows;
while others choose public lives of vowed men and women
as religious brothers and sisters.
Abundantly give to these men and women the courage to follow
their call as witnesses to your gifts and faith and service to the
world.
We ask this in faith
through the name of Jesus our Savior.
Amen.
Oracion para todos en la Vida Consagrada
Dios de toda bondad,
Has llamado a la gente a seguirte fielmente.
ermitaños;
Algunos eligen seguirte con vidas vivas como vírgenes y viudas;

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
to, darle a su Hijo hermanos y hermanas.
From the Pastor’s Desk
I often get together with my friend Fr. Stewart who is pastor
of Our Lady of Victory/ St. Augustine in the Bronx and our
conversations almost always deal with what we are reading
lately. It caught me off guard when he said to me the other
day that he was reading a book by Peter Kreeft, a well
known Catholic Professor of Philosophy. I then said, “No
way! I just bought four books by Kreeft which I recently
started to read!” The first book is called Prayer for Begin-
ners and what a helpful little book it is! Here is a little ex-
erpt from a chapter called, Motives: ten compelling reasons
to pray.
1. Why pray? Because only prayer can save the world
2. There is an even better reason to pray than the fact that only
prayer can save the world. We must pray because God commands
it.
3. By why did God command prayer? Whatever God does, he
does for good reason.
4. We should pray because God’s honor deserves it, in fact de-
mands it.
5. Remembering the facts of death and heaven gives us an even
more pressing reason to learn to pray: We do not have an infinite
amount of time
6. Prayer is delightful!
7. Prayer is the way to know God and this is Jesus’ definition of
eternal life, “This is eternal life; that they know thee, the only true
God (Jn17:3).”
8. Prayer and its effect, knowing God, is the essential prerequisite
for all religious teachers, catechists, evangelists and preachers.
9. Prayer is the only way to spiritual progress.
10. Prayer is necessary because without it we cannot attain the
meaning of life, the end and purpose of our existence.
Kreeft closes this little chapter with these wonderful words:
Becoming saints is the meaning of life. It is why we exist. It is
why God created us. It is the reason he banged out the Big Bang, and why he waited eighteen million years for human life
to evolve and why he providentially provided this one perfect
planet, and why he breathed his Spirit into the Adam he formed out of its dust, and why he prepared a chosen people,
and sent prophets among them, and finally came down from heaven into a mother and a manger and a cross, and was for-
saken by God so that we never be forsaken, and rose again
and sent his Spirit to haunt our hearts-all this stupendous ef-fort was for one end: to make saints, to make little Christs, to
give his Son brothers and sisters.
The whole universe is a saint-making machine. And prayer
is the fuel that powers it.
