L R Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14

years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent.

Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday.

MERCY’S MEASURE “Led by the Spirit”

The Gospel for the First Sunday of Lent always recounts the temptations of Jesus. While both Matthew and Luke detail those temptations for us, Mark gives us a minimum of details, leaving our memories (or imaginations) to fill in the rest. Yet, all three Gospels mention that Jesus was led into the desert by the Holy Spirit in order to be tempted. That, I believe, is the point that must be conveyed above all. Mark speaks more forcefully than the other two by saying that the Spirit “drove” Jesus into the desert. Whether Jesus goes willingly or not, we are not supposed to see this moment in any way as “passive”; this is a decisive action and one that must be undertaken before the proclamation of the Gospel can truly begin. Many of us enter the season of Lent reluctantly or not at all. How many of us still make a special Lenten sacrifice? How many of our young people do not even know what that phrase means? We see Lent as our “time in the desert”—a time of suffering, a time of withering, a time of temptation. And many times, we fail in our Lenten practices because we focus in on the sacrifice and are overwhelmed by the temptation to eat those sweets, have that second helping, put off that prayer, or speak badly about someone who has hurt us. Lent, to many of us, is a time of temptation, not a time of spiritual growth. We are quick to notice the “wild beasts” and spiritual dangers of Lent, but never take the time to see the “angels” and blessings that Lent can also bring. Thus, when Lent is over, we are no more ready to proclaim the Gospel we believe in than when it began. For the last year, we have set our focus on “Renew My Church,” the grouping of parishes we are in and the ultimate decision which will keep Mercy and St. Edward open but close Resurrection and Immaculate Heart of Mary parishes. As we transition toward this future to happen in July 2021, we may be tempted to mistake “Renew My Church” and the decision to close parishes or change organizational structures with the proclamation of the Gospel. The goal of Renew My Church is dynamic faith communities, not organizational change or a smaller number of parishes. A dynamic faith community is one that makes disciples, builds community, and inspires witness. To put this into words, you are used to hearing me say over the years: Discipleship, Stewardship, Evangelization and Vocations. To make this even simpler for those who cannot remember that many words: to be Led by the Spirit. If we want our Catholic faith to really mean something in our lives and in the world, then we must let the Holy Spirit lead us, and take us, dare I say, even to where we do not want to go. No time is better than Lent to take your own hand off the wheel and start letting the Holy Spirit drive you instead. Will you be tempted? Of course? Will you encounter wild beasts and other things that scare you? Most certainly? Will it seem at times like you are in the desert, hot and dry with no relief in sight? No doubt. Will God send His angels to minister to you? Every second of the day. Most importantly, the Spirit will make you ready to proclaim the Gospel!

LA MEDIDA DE LA MERCED “Guiado por el Espíritu”

El Evangelio para el Primer Domingo de Cuaresma siempre relata las tentaciones de Jesús. Mientras que Mateo y Lucas detallan esas tentaciones para nosotros, Marcos nos da pocos detalles, dejando que nuestros recuerdos (o imaginación) imaginen el resto. Sin embargo, los tres Evangelios mencionan que Jesús fue llevado al desierto por el Espíritu Santo para ser tentado. Creo que ese es el punto que debe transmitirse por encima de todo. Marcos habla con más fuerza que los otros dos diciendo que el Espíritu “condujo” a Jesús al desierto. Si Jesús

va voluntariamente o no, se supone que no debemos ver este momento de ninguna manera como “pasivo”; esta es una acción decisiva y que debe emprenderse antes de que el anuncio del Evangelio pueda comenzar verdaderamente. Muchos de nosotros entramos en la temporada de Cuaresma a regañadientes. ¿Cuántos de nosotros todavía hacemos un sacrificio especial de Cuaresma? ¿Cuántos de nuestros jóvenes ni siquiera saben lo que significa hacer un sacrificio cuaresmal? Vemos la Cuaresma como nuestro “tiempo en el desierto”, nuestro tiempo de sufrimiento, nuestro tiempo de sequía, nuestro tiempo de tentación. Y muchas veces, fracasamos en nuestras prácticas cuaresmales porque nos centramos en el sacrificio y estamos abrumados por la tentación de comer esos dulces, de tener ese segundo plato de alimentos, de posponer esa oración o de hablar mal de alguien que nos ha hecho daño. La Cuaresma, para muchos de nosotros, es un tiempo de tentación, no un tiempo de crecimiento espiritual. Nos apresuramos a notar las “bestias salvajes” y los peligros espirituales de la Cuaresma, pero nunca nos tomamos el tiempo para ver los “ángeles” y las bendiciones que la Cuaresma también traer consigo. Asimismo, una vez que la Cuaresma llega a su fin, ya no estamos tan dispuestos a anunciar el Evangelio en cual creemos tal como lo hicimos al comienzo de la Cuaresma. Desde hace un año, nos hemos centrado en “Renueva Mi Iglesia”, la agrupación de parroquias a la que pertenecemos y la decisión final que mantendrá las parroquias La Merced y San Eduardo abiertas, pero cerrará las parroquias Resurrección e Inmaculado Corazón de María. A medida que nos acercamos a este futuro que comenzará en julio del 2021, podemos sentirnos tentados a confundir “Renueva Mi Iglesia” y la decisión de cerrar parroquias o cambiar las estructuras fundamentales, de orden y organización, con el mensaje del Evangelio. El objetivo de Renueva Mi Iglesia son las comunidades de fe dinámicas, no la reforma estructural o mantener menos parroquias abiertas. Una comunidad de fe dinámica es aquella que hace discípulos, construye una comunidad e inspira a dar testimonio. En pocas palabras, usted está acostumbrado a oírme decir lo siguiente en todos estos años: Discipulado, Mayordomía, Evangelización y Vocaciones. Haciendo esto aún más simple para aquellos que no pueden recordar tantas palabras: ser Guiado por el Espíritu. Si queremos que nuestra fe Católica signifique realmente algo en nuestras vidas y en el mundo, entonces debemos dejar que el Espíritu Santo nos guíe, y nos lleve incluso a donde no queremos ir. Ningún tiempo es mejor que la Cuaresma para quitar su propia mano del volante y empezar a dejar que el Espíritu Santo le guíe. ¿Será tentado? ¿Claro que sí? ¿Se encontrará con bestias salvajes y otras cosas que le asustan? ¿Por supuesto que sí? ¿Parecerá que a veces estará en el desierto, acalorado y sediento sin nada que le de alivio a su alrededor? Sin duda. ¿Enviará Dios a Sus ángeles para ayudarle? Cada segundo del día. ¡Lo más importante es que el Espíritu lo preparará para anunciar el Evangelio!

We encourage everyone who attends Mass regularly to register as a parishioner. Registration is important for you as well as for us. For you, registering means you have a family to come home to, a place where your voice as well as your prayers can be heard. If you are asked to be a godparent or sponsor, if you need a letter of support or reference for Immigration, a job interview, a college application, these can only be written for registered parishioners as they require stating how long or how well the person practices their faith.

COTILLIONS: Must have all sacraments and call the rectory at least 4 months before the wished date for the cotillion.

FOOD PANTRY IN ALBANY PARK: Please keep in your heart our brothers and sisters in need. Please donate to the Albany’s park FOOD PANTRY at CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH, located at 3253 West Wilson Ave. in Chicago. Donations for the pantry may also be dropped off at Our Lady of Mercy Church at Sunday Mass or at the Parish Office.

FUNERALS: The funeral home you choose (there are three who advertise on the back of the bulletin) will call the parish while you are there to arrange the times for the various funeral services. Catholics should be given a funeral Mass even if some members of the family are not Catholic. This is not optional, but an essential element of the funeral rite. The rites also include a vigil service (usually at the funeral home) and a burial service at a Catholic cemetery.

Catholics should be buried in a blessed tomb or crypt. Cremation of the body is allowed, but the remains should be buried in a final resting spot. Just as we receive from the Lord body and soul, the family should also give back to the Lord their loved one’s soul and body.

Assistance: Limited assistance is available for parishioners to help with food or rent. Please call the Parish Office for more information.
