REV. Dr. MICHAEL DUANE STINSON Native Atlantan, Rev. Dr. Michael D. Stinson is the second of three sons born to Emily and Charles Stinson, Jr. He was baptized at Warren Memorial UMC by his grandfather, Rev. Charles S. Stinson, Sr. who was serving as the senior pastor. Steeped in academic excellence, Michael graduated as valedictorian from Peyton Forest Elementary School, the top male from Southwest High School, and he continued his academic pursuits at Howard University. He graduated cum laude in three years with a degree in Zoology; and in 1984, received his medical degree at Howard University College of Medicine. Dr. Stinson remained in Washington, DC to do his internship in Obstetrics and Gynecology (Ob/Gyn) at Providence Hospital. In 1985, Dr. Stinson was assigned as the Brigade Surgeon for the 504 th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82 nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army in Fort Bragg, NC. He served for two years before continuing his medical training at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, CO. Dr. Stinson completed his residency and remained at Fitzsimons as a staff physician while completing his military obligations. Dr. Stinson returned to Georgia to practice medicine. After a decade, he chose a new career path in engineering in 2000. For seven years, he worked at the Georgia Department of Transportation; and at the same time, enrolled in a two-year, Disciple Bible Study that put him on another path. Obedient to the Spirit, Dr. Stinson entered Gammon Theological Seminary at the Interdenominational Theological Center, and graduated as valedictorian on May 13, 2006. Staying the course, Rev. Stinson was ordained as Elder in Full Connection in the North Georgia Conference on June 16, 2010. He was appointed Senior Pastor of Poplar Springs UMC (2006) and Senior Associate Pastor of Ben Hill UMC (2007). Since 2012, Rev. Stinson has served as Senior Pastor of Bethel UMC, “A Church in Unity Reaching Out to the Community with the G.O.S.P.E.L.” He has led mission trips to several U.S. cities, Haiti, Kenya and the Dominican Republic, where he has also spread the gospel. Cultivating a free, community garden in Atlanta represents another of his signature achievements. Rev. Stinson serves the North Georgia Annual Conference on Georgia’s Pastors’ School (vice-chair), the East Africa Bridge, and Black Congregational Development. His civic endeavors include chairing the Board of Directors of Not One More Life, an asthma screening and education initiative. He is a member of the South Fulton Running Partners and a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. Rev. Stinson is married to the former Patricia Neal-Tyler and is the proud stepfather of Syntara Tyler.
