The purpose of the program is to link churches in the U.S. with churches in those countries where for more than 40 years governments did not allow churches to be open. The Partnerships last for three years (although they can be renewed at the end of that period). There are five requirements to be an IMT partner: 1) $3,600 annually for outreach and evangelism 2) Regular communication between the churches 3) Volunteer in Mission Teams work with our partners on projects in their country 4) We host representatives or teams from our partner churches 5) We pray for each other. In 2013, Fountain City UMC became an IMT partner with the three churches in Albania. During the communist years all religion was banned in Albania. Places of worship from all faiths were closed and destroyed When the communist government fell in 1992, places of worship reopened, but Albania is still a very secular culture. Today there are three UM churches in Albania: Tirana, Pogradec and a new congregation in Elbesan. Most of the people who attend are under the age of 40, and they are struggling to make new disciples. The Pogradec church is the largest with an average attendance of approximately 100. They have an economic assistance ministry which led to the formation a sewing project, the agricultural project where families are given a plot of lot and the seeds to grow herbs that are sold to pharmaceutical companies, as well as the center for people with disabilities (the only one of its kind in Albania). The Elbasan church was organized in November 2015 and already has about 60 people attending services in this predominantly Moslem city. The Tirana church is the smallest and has recently relocated. While the three churches are finding ways to make connections, they need our help. Albania is one of the poorest countries in Europe and our partnership provides vital funding for their ministries of evangelism and outreach. In November, Rigels Kasmollari, Lay Pastor at the Tirana Church will visit FCUMC and share their stories and why this partnership is so crucial for their ministry. Just as Aaron and Ur came alongside Moses and lifted his weary arms when the tide of battle was turning against the Hebrews, FCUMC has come alongside these three churches to provide support and encouragement. In doing so, we insure that the purposes of God will prevail through the work of three UMC in Albania! Pastor Cornered

“Come over and help us!” Those were the words of Paul’s Macedonian call in Acts 16, and it led to one of Paul’s greatest adventures. Two years ago we heard a similar call from the same part of the world and began our In Mission Together Partnership with the three United Methodist Churches in Albania. In July, five members of our church, Kelsey Stewart, Zach Wood, Mark Biagi, Mark Seals and Randy Frye answered that call by traveling to Albania and co-leading a children’s camp in Pogradec. The camp was attended by 38 children and youth at no cost, because the children of FCUMC also heard their call and responded with a VBS mission offering that completely covered their expenses.

During our stay in Pogradec we taught lessons on the parables of Jesus, helped with crafts and music, played games with the children and learned about Albanian culture, as well as the story of Methodism in that country . We also took time one afternoon to visit an ancient settlement and monastery in Macedonia. Most of all, however, we made new friendships and strengthened the bonds between our churches. We have already been invited to return next summer to help lead the 2016 children’s camp. Our hope is that you will prayerfully consider participating as a member of next year’s team. Contact me for more information about our next mission trip.

Pastor to Speak

Randy Frye share how women can be supportive of our partner church in Albania. The occa-sion will be the Unit Meeting of United Methodist Women in Wesley Hall on Tuesday, September 8 at 10:45 a.m. All women of the church are invited.

The program emphasis of UMW this year is “Founda-tion of Blessedness,” which considers what it means to be blessed by God and how to share that blessing with others. This emphasis is based on The Beatitudes (Mat-thew 5:1-12), and it coincides with our church’s present sermon series.

Lunch will be served at noon. Please make your reserva-tions with your Circle leader or Betty Dougherty (687-6073) if you are staying for lunch.

Our Celebrations

We celebrate with Eric and Beth Peterson on the birth of their son, Jack David Peterson who was born on July 31, 2015. Jack was also welcomed by big sister Mary Caroline.

Congratulations to Brian Hitch, who recently graduated with honors from Bethel University. Brian serves as Director of Security at UT Medical Center. Hitch explained that after years of hesitation about returning to school, he was pleasantly surprised in his success and academic accomplishments in the program. He shares some advice for those thinking of returning to school, “Don’t wait and always believe in yourself.”

Randy Frye, Senior Pastor

Dance for Joy ReturnsIt’s time to “Dance for Joy!” again. “Dance for Joy!” is directed by member MaryCatherine Landry who offers Christian based classes and believes that dance is a part of our souls from birth.

“Dance for Joy!” strives to make dance classes available to everyone who wants their child to learn to dance. Classes are instructed by qualified, well-rounded teachers who share their love of dance to the students. Ballet, tap, modern, jazz, Mommy and me and creative movement are available for ages 1½ through adult. For more information contact MaryCatherine Landry at [email protected] or 688-7564.

Eagle Scout Project

FCUMC member Tyler Bloomfield is working on his Eagle Project and needs your help. Tyler is building a DVD shelf, donation drop boxes for nurse’s stations and collecting PG-13 DVD for the collection to benefit East Tennessee Children’s Hospital.

You can support Tyler’s project by donating financially or PG-13 DVDs. Checks can be made to “Troop 55” (memo line: Tyler Bloomfield Eagle Project. Mail to 4647 Aylesbury Drive Knoxville, TN 37918). DVD donation box is outside Wesley Hall. For questions contact Kim Bloomfield at 256-3231.

Make a Joyful Noise: Join FCUMC Choirs

Youth ChoirAs the Youth Choir and OffeRing (youth bell choir) begin a new year, it is our hope that we might grow our numbers a bit. Regardless of musical experience or ability, all youth in grades 6-12 are invited to join us on Sunday afternoons to rehearse for participation in worship, special services and concerts, and our summer choir tour. Check the church calendar for rehearsal times. Contact Leslie Graves, Director of Music Ministries, at [email protected] with any questions.

Chancel ChoirIf you enjoy the anthems offered by the chancel choir in traditional worship each week, perhaps you should try singing with them. The chancel choir meets on Wednesdays at 7:30 and is open to all interested singers without audition. September is the time when preparations for the Advent and Christmas seasons begin, and it is a perfect and exciting time for new members to join. Contact Leslie Graves, Director of Music Ministries, at [email protected] with any questions, or simply show up on Wednesday night for rehearsal. You are welcome to join anytime!

The NET

The NET after school ministry is blessed with full enrollment for the first time in years. If you would like to support The NET please consider donating $5 Kroger gift cards. For more information on The NET, contact director Caitlin Taylor at [email protected].

Concert to Support Melton ScholarshipIt is once again time to raise funds for the Melton Scholarship Fund, and what better way to do that than by offering a fun concert featuring two pianos, an organ and several current and former FCUMC music staffers? Sheree Beeler, Stephanie Wayland, Andrew Duncan, Kim Meade and Leslie Graves will be joined by a former scholarship recipient to share in an hour of musical fun. This event will take place in the sanctuary on Sunday, September 27, at 2:00 p.m.

The Melton Scholarship is given to college students who have been active in our church music program and are pursuing a degree in music or education. Several worthy candidates are awarded this scholarship annually. As such, your financial support is used for a very worthy cause. Please plan to attend for the beauty and fun of the music, and plan to give so that this scholarship might continue to benefit our youth.

Congratulations to the 2015 Melton scholarship recipients: Susannah Clabough, Mollie Shipman, Rachel Shipman and Kate Smith. Congratulations!

The Privilege of Faithful GivingIn October, FCUMC will focus on becoming a church of extravagant generosity. Generosity describes the Christian’s unselfish willingness to give in order to make a positive difference for the purposes of Christ.

For 28 days the stewardship committee will share devotions written by FCUMC members focusing on generosity. The devotions will be available online and as a printed copy in the church office. Together, our church will share in commitment Sunday on October 25. Join us in prayer as we focus on how to practice extravagant generosity.

I Love to Tell the Story

The UMW and UMM joint church-wide fellowship event brought Ann McKissick Scroggie and Charles Goan for a time of piano music and stories to more than 130 attendees. Mission recognition surprised Pastor Amy Aycock with a stole handmade by Sarah Greene in honor of Amy’s ordination. The event collected almost $1,800 for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of East Tennessee. Central High alumnae joined afterward to welcome Ann and Charles “back home” to Fountain City.

Our Community: Gresham Middle School Partnership

One of the ways FCUMC shares God’s love within our community is through a partnership with Gresham Middle School. Gresham is literally in the backyard of our church and we are excited about another year to serve the students, faculty and staff. We kicked off the school year by serving a back to school work day breakfast to teachers.

You can be a part of this ministry by serving as a teacher prayer partner (box in the church office to drop off cards), donate gift cards or help with service projects throughout the year. To volunteer contact Kim Meade at 688-9551.

Sock Hop A sock hop kicked off our Wednesday nights complete with dancing, poodle skirts, floats and more dancing!
