OPPS Annual Fun Fair: Calling All Volunteers: Help us make our annual Fun Fair one we’ll never forget! We need volunteers to help prepare for the event, even if it’s for a few hours. If you are interested, please email our School Council. Thanks!

Chai and Chat #2: Parents, Guardians, Caregivers of OPPS Students: Join us for our 2nd Chai and Chat session. Topics for discussion include: school organization, summer learning opportunities, opportunities for getting involved in the school community. Bring your ideas and questions! All are welcome! April 10th 9:00 am (1st session) and 7:00 pm (repeat session). Tamil and Mandarin translators will be available. Childminding available. Oscar’s Got Talent: Save the date! Oscar’s Got Talent is making a comeback! The OPPS Junior/Intermediate talent show will be held on Wednesday May 1st at 6:30pm. Auditions are currently being held and acts that make the show will be posted the week of April 1st! Please join us celebrating the various talents of groups small and large found at our school! Gr.8’s at PEO Engineering Event

Tuesday was Epilepsy awareness day, as many students and staff wore purple. Did you know that lavender brings calmness and relaxation to people with epilepsy? As lavender is a relaxing colour, for epilepsy awareness day we wore purple. Seizures are caused by abnormal electrical impulses in the brain, and relaxing the brain is one of many ways to treat epilepsy. Today at 2 o’clock we shut all lights off in the school in support of Earth Hour! Earth Hour is a worldwide annual event encouraging everyone to shut off their lights and save energy! It is held to raise awareness about the effects energy has on our environment! On Friday four of our grade eight students participated in the PEO York Region Engineering Challenge. They were to create an electromagnetic motor out of the materials supplied. The students didn’t end up placing but they worked hard and collaborated as a team. Great Job Team! Oscar Peterson PS Is excited to Celebrate Music Monday on Monday May 6th. The entire school will fill the skies by singing Oscar Peterson’s “Hymn to Freedom” alongside hundreds of thousands of other Canadian students on the same day!

Thank you to all Junior/Intermediate students who tried out for Oscar’s Got Talent! A list of acts who are in the show, alongside some callbacks we’d like to see again next week, was posted today. We look forward to seeing our students perform their talents on Wednesday May 1st. Everyone is invited to come to watch the show at 6:30pm in the gym.

On Thursday, we participated in an event called The Big Crunch. The Big Crunch is an event that many schools participate in to promote healthy eating. At 3 o’clock, students will be eating a healthy food item at the same time to show that healthy eating is a great thing.

Ms. Paul and Ms. Ellis’ FDK class had a wonderful time exploring Science this week with Scientists in the School. They worked with fossils, measured temperature, sorted shells, mixed solids and liquids, painted pre-historic fish, explored the use of a compass, used a magnifying glass and of course had lots of fun!

Autism Awareness Activities at Oscar Peterson April is Autism Awareness month and April 2nd is World Autism Awareness day. Wear blue on Tuesday, April 2nd to show your support for autism awareness. To raise money to donate to Autism Ontario, Oscar Peterson will be holding their second annual Human Hungry Hippos Tournament! Bring a donation to the gym at recess to watch your teachers play Human Hungry Hippos! There will be a schedule posted around the school and we will make announcements to let you know what day your grade is invited to come watch.

Hello All,

We are happy to let you all know that we are doing another fundraiser in memory of our Jaylen Williams. Please see the attached flyer.

As you may know, Jaylen had an opportunity through Make-A-Wish, and having his wish come true brightened the last few months of his life. Jaylen passed away May 2016 with a thankful heart. Jaylen always had a strong desire to help others so, through Play for Jay, we are helping make wishes come true in Jaylen's memory.

We have a big venue, however, there has been an amazing amount of interest from Jaylen's soccer family already for this event. This will be a well-attended event with dinner, fun entertainment, music, a silent auction and much, much more so we are hoping the Gala will sell out pretty quickly. For this reason, please confirm your attendance and the number of seats that you may need as soon as possible. I will have the tickets ready by late next week and will be happy to make arrangements to get them to anyone interested.
