What is Autism Awareness Week? World Autism Awareness Week runs from 27th March until the 2nd April 2017.

This worldwide event is designed to raise the awareness of autism, which will in turn educate the general public about how autism can affect people in a huge variety of ways.

There are a number of ways in which awareness can be raised, this fundraising pack is a great tool for learning, understanding and fundraising for children, adults and families that are affected by autism.

• Autism is a lifelong condition that has no cure • 1 in 100 people in the UK are affected by Autism, and that is only

those who are diagnosed • Autism includes a spectrum of conditions, which means whilst

people share certain difficulties, their condition will affect them in different ways

• People with autism can feel isolated and are often excluded from their own communities due to being misunderstood

• 70% of people with autism have at least one mental health disorder

• Only 16% of autistic adults in the UK are in full-time paid employment, and only 32% are in some kind of paid work

• Only 10% of adults with autism receive ‘employment support, 53% say they want it

• Autism has a genetic link • All those affected by autism have differing levels of difficulty in:

communication, social relationships, processing and sensory This fundraising pack will teach you about how people with autism have difficulty with communication, social relationships, processing and sensory issues.

Who are Autism East Midlands?

Our Vision: a world which recognises, understands and values people with autism and where they and their families receive the services and support they need throughout their lives.

• Set up in 1968 on the initiative of a group of parents in Nottingham who were concerned that their children were not getting a suitable education.

• We are the largest autism specific charity in the East Midlands

• We have a wide range of services that support both children and adults with autism as well as their families, including: a specialist school in the centre of Nottingham, adult residential and day services, family support hubs, outreach services, a diagnosis and assessment centre as well as training for parents, carers and professionals

2015/16 Review in Numbers

1. We supported over 1,300 overnight stays for children and young people

2. 1,689 business attendees on 187 training courses

3. Supported 3 people to gain paid employment for the first time

4. 3 people achieved qualifications in maths, English and horticulture at The Sherwood Centre for adults

5. 35 people began to use assistive technology (Brain in Hand)

6. 376 children accessed flexible short breaks & holiday activities
