Left to right: Roy Tang Yun-kwong, Director of Broadcasting; David Pang, SCMP Group Chairman; Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Secretary for Development; Cliff Buddle, Acting Editor-in-chief, South China Morning Post; Bryan Curtis, RTHK’s Head of English Programme Service; and Gordon Fuller, General Manager of Grand Hyatt Hotel Hong Kong, attend Operation Santa Claus (OSC) closing ceremony at Grand Hyatt Hotel, Wan Chai.

For many of those in need, Christmas

doesn’t always bring joy. Instead, the season

of plenty sometimes just accentuates the

misery for those that lack the means to

improve their lives. To give hope to such

causes, South China Morning Post (SCMP)

and Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK)

began their annual fundraiser, Operation

Santa Claus (OSC) in 1988. Now one of the

most successful and beloved Hong Kong

charity initiatives, OSC has raised in the

region of HK$170 million and benefited

around 158 charities during its 24 year

history. Key figures associated with OSC’s

most recent campaign included Honorary

Patron, Mrs. Selina Tsang, wife of the Chief

Executive, and Cantopop star, Ms. Joyce

Cheng, who served as Ambassador.

The theme for the 14 November, 2011 to

18 January, 2012 campaign was ‘All I want

for Christmas is to be able to walk…

to smile... to laugh!’. In addition to

extensive daily coverage in the SCMP and

on RTHK Radio 3, OSC 2011 attracted an

incredible outpouring of communitywide

support spanning not only individuals

but also corporations, foundations, clubs,

associations and schools. This year’s

campaign was a record breaker, raising

HK$17,500,000 for Hong Kong’s most

deserving causes and neediest individuals. “ Most of the beneficiaries aren’t big names that can organise fundraisers every year... Smaller NGOs that might not have the track record to receive government subsidies really benefit from community and corporate contributions.”

Major Donors

OSC 2011 featured 27 major donors; leading

local corporations and foundations who each

donated at least HK$150,000. Some major

donors were interviewed on RTHK3 and all

had their logo highlighted in SCMP’s City

Section daily OSC Christmas tree between 1

December, 2011 and 1 January, 2012.

Having supported OSC every year since 1997

and raised a record breaking HK$2,450,000

from their December 2011 Director’s Choir

event at ELEMENTS, Morgan Stanley Asia

Ltd. was a very deserving winner of 2011’s

‘Top Fundraiser Award’. Also worthy of

everyone’s thanks were seven first time

major donors: CITIC Bank International,

Cruciani Bracelet, Deacons, Li & Fung

(1906) Foundation, Segantii Capital, Swire

Properties Ltd. and Wellcome.

Like Morgan Stanley, the Swire Trust has also

been closely involved with OSC for 15 years.

Supporters of at least 10 years’ standing

included Bank of America Merrill Lynch, the

Five-A-Side Football Tournament, JP Morgan

and UBS AG. UBS raised an extraordinary

HK$1,800,000, of which HK$1,600,000 was

donated by trading floor staff and clients who

dressed up in colourful costumes. The Bank of

America Merrill Lynch also deserves a special

mention for raising over HK$1,600,000 at

various events including its OSC Charity Golf

Day and Office Mini Golf day.

Other key OSC 2011 Corporate donations

came from the 14 teams who helped raised

some HK$1,500,000 by playing in fancy dress

at the Wing Ding Squash Tournament and

its associated charity auctions. The 24 junior

and 20 corporate sides who fought it out

in 2011’s Five-a-side Football Tournament

and its accompanying quiz night also raised

a commendable HK$1,100,000. Sponsored

singing was the order of the day at Hong

Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, where a

Charity Musical Christmas Lunch raised

almost HK$800,000.

Heartfelt thanks must also go to J.P. Morgan

for winning ‘Most Creative Group Award’

with their in-house dumpling eating contest,

and Sino Land who hosted charity sales of

featured Casa Eva and Christmas Anime

Other generous corporate donors included

Item Industries Ltd., Bandon Enterprises

Ltd., Providence Foundation, Starlit Way

Ltd., Camay Garments Factory, GM Metal

Packaging Ltd. and Wing Hang Bank.

Clubs & AssociationsThe 13 clubs and associations who supported

OSC 2011 contributed some HK$279,217 to

the needy. First time supporters included

Aberdeen Boat Club, Sai Kung Christmas

Quiz, and a Strings Camerata Concert

organised by a group of strings players. Other

important initiatives in this area included

the Police Tactical Unit’s Team Building

Programme with police dogs participation,

the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s Letters to

Santa Scheme and the 2011 OSC Hash.

School DonorsLast year also saw 26 schools raise

HK$583,147 for OSC. Key first-time supporters

included the German Swiss International

and Marymount Secondary schools. Last

year’s ‘Top School Fundraiser Award’ went

to Discovery Mind Kindergarten who raised

HK$110,644 from their 7th annual Charity

Walk across Discovery Bay. Joining them

atop the winner’s podium as ‘Most Creative

School’ was St. Mark’s School whose

calendar of unique events included a famine

experiencing camp. Many other schools also

earned beneficiaries’ eternal gratitude by

hosting a variety of bazaars and football,

basketball and talent competitions.

Individual and Online DonorsThe 350 individuals who generously donated

HK$1,500,000 included one anonymous

supporter who donated an astonishing

HK$500,000!

“Operation Santa Claus has been very successful. It focuses on community groups and NGOs, which are less well-known to Hong Kong society. It also allows RTHK and the SCMP to give them coverage, reporting their work to the wider public. This is professional. It is an approach that all community projects inHong Kong should emulate.”

Santa’s Sports Day puts the fun into fund raising

A pioneering new fundraising initiative

which succeeded in raising HK$270,000, the

OSC-organised Santa’s Sports Day took place

on Sunday 6 November, 2011 at Ma On Shan

Sports Ground. The first of its three rounds of

team building games included a ‘Go-for-Goal’

challenge plus ‘Three-legged’, ‘Reindeer Chair’

and ‘Santa’s Sack Skipping’ races. Everyone

subsequently pitted their wits in a ‘Santa’s

Balancing’ game before joining a third and

final round ‘Tug-of-War’. In all, seven caring

corporations including Cathay Pacific Airways,

Convenience Retail Asia Ltd., Li & Fung

Trading, Melco Group, Sino Group, Toys“R”us

and Trinity Ltd., sent a total of nine teams of

10 players to the event.

The day’s top honours went to Cathay Pacific

Airways (‘Champion of the Day’) and Li &

Fung Group (‘Most Supportive Corporation’

for sending six teams from its subsidiaries).

Special thanks must also go to the Police

Tactical Unit for providing an official judge

and the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade

for supporting on-site medical services. In

addition to individual attendees, OSC 2011

would also like to extend its appreciation to

the event’s various sponsors. They included

Mr. George Ng who supported the event’s

expenses, Cathay Pacific Airways who

donated complimentary air tickets as

prize for ‘Champion of the Day’, Watsons

Water who supplied distilled water and

Envirosax who gave away printed

fabric bags.

Santa’s Sports Day

Some of the 90 participants in the OSC 2011 Santa’s Sports Day compete in a sack race for charity at the Ma On Shan Sports Ground.

Santa’s work begins well before the donations come in

While it only lasts for around six weeks, each

OSC campaign involves extensive advance

planning. 2011’s programme kicked off with the

posting of a ‘The Season of Goodwill Begins’

notice in the SCMP in late May. Still more

awareness was generated by similarly timed

announcements on the official osc.scmp.com

and www.scmp.com websites and via the

distribution of an e-newsletter to members of

Wisegiving.

Getting into the seasonal swing, South China

Morning Post publishes daily articles about both

beneficiaries and donors between 14 November,

2011 and 18 January, 2012, and coverage of school

activities appear in Young Post from 20 October,

2011 all the way to 19 January, 2012. In addition

to this extensive coverage, OSC specific events

such as Santa’s Sports Day were covered in other

media. There were also audio and video podcasts

plus RTHK reports on the opening and closing

ceremonies at http://rthk.hk/special/osc2011/.

Visible on a daily basis, outdoor media such as

buses running between Hong Kong and Kowloon

between 1 and 28 November 2011 also featured

prominently. Traditional publicity channels

such as posters and leaflets were also used to

complement ‘newer’, less traditional media

such as the official osc.scmp.com website and

a Facebook page, plus various eDMs to SCMP

subscribers and readers.

The end result was a clearly thought-out and

carefully co-ordinated campaign that touched

hearts throughout Hong Kong. In addition to

individuals from all walks of life, the OSC 2011

message succeeded in reaching virtually every

local company, school and professional and

social body.

kindness. In 2011, OSC was inundated with over 80 funding proposals. Comprising representatives of the SCMP, RTHK,

various donors and members of independent advisory body, WiseGiving of Hong Kong Council of Social Service, the
