Dear parents and carers,
I would like to draw your attention to the excellent work of our Friends of The Priory
School (FOTPS), a group of dedicated parents and staff who fund-raise in order to
support the work of the school.
After three years as Chair of FOTPS, Sara Knowles stepped down from this role
recently. On behalf of our students, staff and governors, I would like to thank
Mrs Knowles for her leadership of FOTPS which resulted in an astonishing amount of
fund-raising over that time. Last term teachers and support staff were invited to place
bids for funding from FOTPS, and an overwhelming amount in excess of £12,000 was
donated which has been raised over the last three years through events such as
Priory Fest, the Christmas Fayre and by serving lots of tea and coffee at all our school
events. The hard work of the entire committee, as well as additional helpers, has been
rewarded with fantastic fundraising in support of the school.
The donated funds have been spent on a huge range of items that are impacting
positively around the school: the Greenpower car team purchased a set of overalls and
helmets that have made racing possible; the Food Tech department purchased a new
chiller; the PE department purchased a tumble dryer for kit, as well as new indoor goal
posts and other sports equipment; the SEND department purchased specialist
equipment including e-readers; the ML department purchased additional listening
resources; the Music department put a donation towards the purchase of the steel pan
set, and the list goes on. The positive impact on learning and the experiences we are
able to offer our students as a result of this work is something we are all very grateful
for.
Following on from the hard work of Sara and the rest of the FOTPS committee and
team, I am delighted to inform you that we now have two joint Chairs: the post is
being shared by Jacqui Ide and Nina Flatt. The FOTPS Secretary continues to be Sarah Phillips and
Nicki Taylor continues in her role as Treasurer. I am also very grateful to Emma Jacques, Helen Shiers,
Tracey Robinson, Clare Woods, Jude Milner, Sally Griffin and Ali Hayes-Markham for their support as well.
The next big event for the FOTPS will be our Christmas Fayre on Saturday 2 December in the school hall.
We will be sending out more information after half-term, but for now please save the date in your diaries
as it is always a very popular and enjoyable event, and a great opportunity to purchase lovely Christmas
gifts.
The school hosted a very successful Open Evening a few weeks ago and I would like to thank all the staff,
students and governors who attended and made it the special event that it clearly was. All our visitors
were incredibly impressed by our high academic standards and our commitment to a values-based
education, and I was very proud indeed of the school. The level of applause from the audience indicated
really clearly just how much our visitors appreciated the work that had gone in - thank you and well done
to all.
On the theme of pride, I now have a Twitter account which can be found at @PrioryHead. I am using this
forum to post and retweet all the remarkable activities that go on in our school, so please follow me to
keep up to date with school life on a daily basis. There is something to be pleased and proud about every
single day and I think that is worth sharing with you and the local community.
Enjoy the half term break,
Mrs R Gibb Headteacher

NETBALL Priory vs Ashcombe Tuesday 3rd October
Our Year 7 netball squad had their first school match against Ashcombe. All the girls played really well and gelled quickly as a team on court. Jessica Harrington was phenomenal in defence and stopped a number of goal scoring opportunities. At half time the score was 2 all. Into the second half, the girls continued to play well with some lovely goals from Emma, Mary and Laura. Hannah Flashman captained the team brilliantly and led by example. Unfortunately Ashcombe pulled away and won the game 6-4. At the end of the match both teams voted for a Player of the Match from the opposition. The Ashcombe team voted Emma Coles as Player of the match. Well done Emma.
The Year 8 team had a tough match against a very good Ashcombe team. However, they worked hard and showed some exceptional skills and team work through the match. Special mention to Lydia Reed who had a fantastic debut playing in her first ever school game and also to Cerys Manwaring and Katie Roberts who stepped in to cover at the last minute due to an injury. Also special mention to Catherine Goodman (Captain) who despite being injured came and supported her team and carried out her Captain duties. Priory vs Boxhill Wednesday 11th October
The squad of 10 Year 7 girls all played brilliantly and linked together from defence to attack. Hannah Flashman (captain), Ashleigh Matcham and Poppy Callicott all showed excellent skills in the middle of the court. Laura Pusey, Emma Coles and Scarlet Glover all shot brilliantly and scored the goals. There were debut performances from Daisy Livey and Macy Parker. It was an excellent squad effort and lovely to hear and see the girls who weren't playing supporting those who were on court. The final score was 7-2 to The Priory. The Boxhill team voted Scarlet Glover as the player of the match. Well done to the whole squad.
There are only two words to describe the Year 8 match - fast and furious! Both teams played well and at speed, this lead to some excellent skills and teamwork. The defence did amazing to stop the Boxhill team from scoring. The final score was 1-1. The Year 8 were great fun to watch and umpire. The Boxhill team voted Catherine Goodman as their Player of the Match. Well done to Catherine and the whole squad.

NETBALL (continued...) The Year 9 team got off to a strong start and showed some excellent well thought-out play to make sure the shooters got the ball in the best position. Madison, Daisy and Rebecca all worked tirelessly in defence and linking up with the attackers. Lucy, Abbey and Laura all shot brilliantly and scored some impressive goals. Katie Roberts made her debut for the school team in this match which was great to see. The team were winning 4-1 at half time and pushed on in the second half finally winning 8-3. The Boxhill team voted Grace and Hannah Hill as their joint player of the match. A fantastic squad effort, well done girls! A special thanks goes to Year 10 students, Holly and Kiera McKeown who stayed and helped by umpiring and coaching the teams. Mrs Harrison and Miss Coleman are both super proud of not only the netball skills shown by the netball teams but also the team spirit and support all the girls have shown each other. FOOTBALL Year 10 vs Cobham Tuesday 10th October The Year 10 game against Cobham was one for the spectators, with 7 goals in the first half and the lead changing between the sides 3 times it was an end to end affair. Cobham did however maintain the lead through the second half and despite some stoic defending and lots of hard work we could not pull ourselves back into the game. The big advantage to this game was that we started to play as a team and we hope to continue in this respect in our game against St Andrews on Thursday. Man of the match was Leo Jolly. Year 10 vs St Andrew’s Thursday 12th October Year 10 had their best performance of the season on Thursday night. It was especially encouraging with another two players entering the team for the first time due to injuries. Although the win went to St Andrew’s the formation of the team in attack and defence was far more robust than in the last game. The support was fantastic both from students and parents and this helped to lift the team in the final minutes when fatigue set in. Man of the match went to Bradley Berrill. Mr Currie
Good Luck to the Priory Riding Team who qualified recently to compete in the NSEA Championships being held this weekend at Addington Manor, Buckingham.

RUGBY Girls Rugby On Tuesday 3rd October, ten students from Years 7, 8 and 9 went to Dorking Rugby Club to take part in a RFU run tournament for girls. Student from Year 7; Bryony Cowling. Students from Year 8; Georgia Slade-Davis, Gracie Attridge and Hannah Margetts. Students from Year 9; Grace Hill, Abi West, Abigail Powell, Madison Wooding, Daisy Baker and Elizabeth Armstrong. The RFU coaches demonstrated tackling skills to help the students to develop their courage and ability, with Hannah in particular making a memorable tackle on an opponent leaving me and all the RFU coaches gasping in joy. Throughout the afternoon the students competed against some of the other seven schools. Playing a variety of games; from tag to full contact. The students had a fantastic afternoon and were a credit to the school and themselves, with some real talent being shown. Woman of the tournament was Bryony, her determination and bravery stood out, she was a little warrior. Mr T Francis Years 7, 8 and 9 On Monday 2nd and Wednesday 4th October we hosted the NSSSA sports partnership rugby tournaments. The tournaments were for Years 7, 8 and 9 and we entered teams into each age group. There were 5 other local schools taking part and it gave our pupils a chance to get some competitive rugby experience early in the season. Year 9’s performance was the most noticeable and we look forward to big things from them into the rest of the season. Although the results did not go the way of Years 7 and 8 it was good to see so many of our pupils having fun and representing the school. Mr Currie
