th It is a pleasure to welcome you to Puducherry for the 35 annual conference of the Indian Rheumatology Association (IRACON). Puducherry formerly known as Pondicherry and fondly called Pondy is located at the eastern coast of India overlooking the Bay of Bengal. It is approximately 150 km south of Chennai Airport.

The venue for IRACON 2019 is the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER). JIPMER is one of the oldest medical schools of India established by the French Governmentin the year 1823 as École de Médicine de Pondichérry. The medical school became Dhanvantri Medical College at the time of de facto transfer of Pondicherry to Government of India. It was renamed JIPMER in the year 1964 and was conferred the status of an institute of national importance since 2008.

An essential theme for 2019 IRACON will be to provide holistic approach to patient management. We intend to make the conference as interactive as possible through multiple workshops, symposia, and meet the professor sessions. There will be a pre-conference CME in the form of a ‘Refresher Course’ dealing with Essentials of Rheumatology for the benefit of undergraduates, post graduates, and practicing clinicians.

Apart from scientific sessions of IRACON, Puducherry will also interest you for its numerous tourist attractions. A former French colony, it is well known for the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, the universal township of Auroville, the Matrimandir and the White town with French quarters. Its serene beaches and water sports attract many from all over India and abroad. Nearby tourist destinations include Mahabalipuram, Mangroves at Pichhavaram and National Fossil Wood Park at Tiruvakkarai. For the religiously inclined, the Nataraja temple at Chidambaram, Arunachaleshwar Temple at Tiruvannamalai, Lord Saneeswara Temple at Karaikal, the Basilica of our Lady of Good Health at Vellankani, and Nagore Dargah Nagapattinam are all within few hours drive.

Travel to Puducherry & Weather in December

The best way to reach Puducherry is to arrive at Chennai. If you are arriving by flight take a taxi from the airport, the travel time depending on the traffic conditions ranges between 2½ to 3 hours. The taxi fare is roughly around ̀ 3000/-

Puducherry is also connected to Bengaluru and Hyderabad by air. There are daily flights from Puducherry to Bengaluru and Puducherry to Hyderabad operated by Spice Jet. Plus, there are direct trains from Puducherry to the major Indian cities in southern India namely Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Calicut, Hubli, Bhubaneswar and also to the capital i.e. New Delhi.

From December to February the weather in Puducherry is pleasant, this is when the evenings are cool and temperatures are between 22 to 28 degrees centigrade. Being coastal in location the city also receives rainfall from November to January.
