Chair’s Message

Dear Delegates to ThinFilms2018, friends old and new, ladies and gentlemen: After ThinFilms2010 in Harbin and ThinFilms2014 in Chongqing, this is the third time our Thin Films Conference comes back to China. Welcome to Shenzhen, a vibrant and booming young city in China.

For those new to this conference series, ThinFilms2018 is the 9th

biennial International Conference on Technological Advances of Thin Films & Surface Coatings. Started in 2002, this conference series provide a knowledge exchange and interactive platform for researchers and engineers from industry,

research laboratories and academia. This year, ThinFilms2018 still has 13 symposia, but some changes were made to the symposia titles and content. These 13 symposia cover biological coatings to clean energy, from mechanical to optical, from organic to optoelectronic, and from theory to industrial applications, covering almost all aspects of thin films and coatings. This edition of the conference received over 650 abstracts from 25 countries/regions including

China 72.1%, Taiwan 10.8%, Europe and America 5.9%, Southeast Asia 3.3%, Korea 2.7%, Japan 2.6%, and Hong Kong 2.1%, among others. This edition of the conference also sees another feature: a few tens of industrial participants from China’s southern region such as Shenzhen and its surrounding cities where thin films and coatings industries are booming. This is a very good sign of the strengthening linkage between academia and industry through our conference. We shall encourage more such interactions in the future.

The conference attracted over 30 companies to exhibit their latest products and technologies, which is a historical record on participation of industries to the academic event. It shows the popularity and relevance of our conference series to the industries. In addition, Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP), Shandong University and SOFN Instruments Co. Ltd provided special sponsorships to support various aspects of the event. I’d like to thank CIOMP, Shandong University all industrial sponsors and exhibitors for their generous support and live demonstration of their thin films and coatings related products that should make the conference more lively and interesting.

About Thin Films Society

The world's first Thin Films Society (TFS) was inaugurated on Singapore's National Day (9 August 2009)

in Singapore. The TFS is a professional society dedicated to the art and science of thin films and coatings for their

myriad applications, established explicitly for the world's thin films enthusiasts - from academic researchers to

industrial practitioners, and from materials/equipment suppliers to product designers. The Society is chartered to

facilitate the dissemination and exchange of new knowledge among its members as well as the mutual sharing of

its collectively distributed experience.

The Society has a huge international network whereby the Vice Presidents are carefully selected from

countries or regions in Asia and beyond. These Vice Presidents have easy access and right channels to reach the

thin films and coatings researchers in their respective countries or regions. As such, this international superhighway

network guarantees fast and effective dissemination of thin films and coatings related information, equipment

information, and testing and measurement information to the right people all over the word.

Though formally established only in 2009, the Thin Films Society is also the de facto host of the highly

successful and visible International Conference on the Technological Advances in Thin Films and Surface

Coatings. The biannual thin films conference series started in 2002 with about 70 participants and exponentially

increased to more than 300 at ThinFilms2004, 500 at ThinFilms2006 and 800 at ThinFilms2008, ThinFilms2010

and ThinFilms2012. The ThinFilms2018 Conference in Shenzhen is the 9th conference in the conference series,

and we expect to see a continuous growth in the number of participants.
