¡Fuera GPS, por un momento! En el tiempo de los mapas desplegados en “Connecting Texas: 300 Years of Trails, Rails and Roads”, exhibición ya abierta en The Witte Museum, se debía tener la intención de ir a alguna parte, la paciencia para seguir los caminos trazados en mapas de papel y, quizás, hasta algún buen lente para leer la letra pequeña. Y todos los senderos, vías ferroviarias y caminos mostrados en estos mapas demuestran porqué San Antonio fue en un momento la ciudad más importante de Texas.

Creada por Texas General Land Office (GLO, por sus iniciales en inglés) específicamente para The Witte, con ocasión de la celebración de los trescientos años de San Antonio, esta exhibición presenta 40 mapas y documentos que “examinan cómo los exploradores, nativos americanos, ejércitos, inmigrantes y primeros colonizadores se

movieron dentro, alrededor y a través de Texas durante los últimos 300 años”, presenta el museo.

“Queríamos mostrar a San Antonio como el centro de Texas y cómo fue la ciudad más importante por muchos años antes que llegaran los tiempos modernos”, explicó James Harskins, director de Servicios Públicos de Texas General Land Office, durante la apertura de la exhibición.

“(San Antonio) fue la ciudad más grande, de 1728 a 1931, de Texas y el enfoque es que siempre ha sido la central en Texas, donde Texas se hizo y se formó como la conocemos, aunque ya no sea la más grande del estado”, explicó Bruce Shackelford, curador de South Texas Heritage del Witte Museum.

“En Estados Unidos los americanos piensan que la gente llegó al lado este y migró al sur, pero la verdad es que empezó del sur y migró al norte y al este, entonces estos mapas muestran los caminos que la gente caminaba, que tienen una historia más larga,

de tiempo mucho más atrás”, añadió Shackelford.

Conectando TexasLa intrincada red de caminos

que muestran estos mapas es lo que conectó a Texas. Desde los senderos trazados por los nativos americanos, los Caminos Reales establecidos por los conquistadores españoles, las rutas de los colonizadores alemanes, las vías de movilización del ganado y el trazo de las vías ferroviarias y carreteras crearon el paisaje del futuro estado de Texas. A lo largo de todas vías confluyeron diferentes culturas que encontraron un lugar en el estado y forman ahora parte de su identidad.

specializing in bath and beauty products made from certified organic ingredients. Kela and her husband, Kevin Nabors, create products including macaron soap bars, unicorn bath bombs, deodorant, body scrubs, body washes and facial care products.

The products are made with local ingredients and without any artificial dyes, chemicals and other ingredients that can harm the skin. The products are freshly made to order and

preserved with all natural additives to ensure the vitality of ingredients.

“We feel that we are doing the best we can to go back to the basics,” said Kela Nabors to La Prensa. “Going back to tradition, [My Husband and I] see that they last longer, they don’t retain those harmful preservatives. We found out that our soaps last from two and a half to three weeks.”

New research shows charter schools highly cost-effective

The University of Arkansas published a new report, stating that charter schools are more costeffective and yield a greater returnoninvestment than traditional public schools in eight cities, including San Antonio.

The study, “Bigger Bang, Fewer Bucks? The Productivity of Charter Schools in Eight U.S. Cities,” observed how charters were funded during 20132014 school year based on students’ performance on the National Assessment of Educational Process (NAEP). The results showed that although there was a lack of funding in charter schools, students earned higher test scores.

San Antonio’s charter schools ranked second at 26 percent more costeffective than Traditional Public Schools (TPS). San Antonio’s charters also provide a 30 percent greater ReturnOnInvestment (ROI) than TPS, while receiving $2,648 less than TPS.

“The student achievement citywide in San Antonio is right at and slightly above the average in Texas,” said Patrick Wolf, Ph.D, distinguished professor and 21st century chair in School Choice, Department of Education Reform, University of Arkansas. “San Antonio is interesting because in most states, the education sectors in the public school district and education areas within their cities produce lower student achievements than the statewide average.”

The report also examined costeffectiveness and ROI in

Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Houston, Indianapolis, New York and Washington, D.C. It was important during the study to find cities with small and large sectors to balance out what makes other cities thrive.

Researchers found that, on average, charter schools are 33 percent more costeffective in math and 32 percent more costeffective in reading. Charters also deliver a greater ROI in all eight cities. Charters’ ROI exceeds that of traditional public school by an average of 38 percent over the course of a 13year investment in a K12 education.

“In these important urban environments, there is a clear productivity advantage for public charter schools,” said Corey DeAngelis, distinguished doctoral fellow at the University of Arkansas and lead author of the report. “As policymakers consider which types of public schools work best and where to invest educational resources, our research indicates that charters are an especially attractive vehicle for delivering education to students productively.”

To measure costeffectiveness and ROI, the authors matched performance data from the NAEP and research findings from CREDO at Stanford University with comprehensive data regarding the total funding received by schools in the public charter and traditional public school sectors.

This new report builds on findings released last year by University of Arkansas researchers showing that charter schools in major metropolitan areas receive on average $5,721 less per pupil than traditional public schools,

representing a 29 percent funding inequity gap on average.

That report, “Charter School Funding: Inequity in the City,” examined all sources of revenue including federal, state, local and nonpublic dollars. It found a funding discrepancy that favored traditional public schools by at least 10 percent, and in some cases found that the funding discrepancy has widened over time.

In August 2017, the Texas Legislature passed House Bill 21, a school finance law that included up to $60 million annually for charter facilities funding beginning in fiscal year 201819. That funding will be divided per student among the charter schools that meet state standards.

This was the first time in Texas where public charter schools will receive state funding to pay for leasing and maintaining buildings and facilities

For Wolf, the country has a long way to go to fill the gap between the funding between TPS and charter schools. Him and his research team will continue to find ways to end the gap between TPS and charter so students can earn a bigger bang towards their education.

“We are seeing an appreciation of the contribution that public charter schools are producing,” continued Wolf. “We are checking to see a couple of things including the expansion of public charter schools and efforts to try and shrink the funding gap between TPS and charters. Texas is shrinking that gap. We want charters funded more equitably as we move ahead.”

Historical evidence shows that the origins of Spanish art in San Antonio likely started with the construction of San Jose Mission in 1720. This mission, known today for its famous rose window, was located a halfday travel by horseback from the pueblo of San Antonio.

The Franciscan friars who built the first missions in San Antonio, were aided by Indians and artisans who had travelled from Mexico’s interior to San

Antonio. These seasoned workers taught the local Mission Indians agriculture, construction, and ranching trades. They also contributed to the creation of religious pieces for the altar and interior walls of the missions.

The San Antonio 1718 art exhibit offers much to art lovers and those interested in history. For SAMA curator Marion Oettinger and his associates, there was ample art from the museums and private collections of

sidered mulattos. There were terms for mulattos who married Indian women as well as ethnic labels for mulatto women who married Chinese persons. Some of the terms used were highly derogatory.

Overall, the San Antonio 1718 exhibit of more than one hundred art pieces contributes to our understanding of who we are as San Antonians and how we got here. To gain greater insights from these questions, we are aided by a superb catalogue edited by SAMA curator Marion Oettinger. The five essays on art, religion, history, and politics provide an excellent overview of society and culture in 18th century Mexico and Spain.

The four historical maps included in the catalogue show how New Spain programmed every detail of city planning. Of interest is a 1777 “Map of Main Plaza of San Antonio” which places the San Fernando Cathedral in the center of the city

facing the main plaza. Every pueblo and urban area of New Spain had similar designs.

What made San Antonio unique is how the frontier shaped the city. The Franciscan order failed to establish missions in East and West Texas and, as a consequence, Bexar, as the city was also known, became the principal site for Texas Spanish settlements. Bexar proved initially receptive to Catholic missionary zeal and Indian labor. Good soil and creative water irrigation systems contributed to productivity in ranching and agriculture.

An exhibit such as “San Antonio 1718: Art from Mexico” is organized perhaps every 300 years. I hope not. This beautiful exhibition is a model for other museums located in areas where New Spain had a footprint. The SAMA team should be congratulated for an outstanding “tour de force.” It is truly a show that everyone in Texas should see.

The San Antonio Museum of Art exhibition, “San Antonio 1718: Art from Mexico”, takes visitors to the exhibit back to the first century of the history of San Antonio. If you are wondering why the art is from Mexico and not San Antonio, it is complicated. The earliest colonial art, which had mostly religious purposes, did survive to some extent at the San Antonio missions. Today, visitors to the San Antonio missions can see many early examples of Spanish colonial art in the paintings and sculpture in the church and in the architecture of the missions themselves.

Spanish soldiers came to San Antonio in 1718 to build a presidio for the purpose of creating a midway rest point between Saltillo in Northern Mexico, and the missions and presidios of East Texas. Thus, prior to the construction of the San Antonio missions, these Spanish soldiers, aided by local Indians built San Antonio de Bexar, a military fortress, west of the San Antonio River known today as the Alamo. The military families assigned to San Antonio experienced hardships common to frontier living and thus did not concern themselves with making art or preserving artistic or historical objects.

In terms of art and culture, we value the Alamo for its colonial architecture, but it would have been unlikely that Spaniards would have placed fine art pieces there. In 1718, and for the next 100 years of Spanish rule, the Alamo served primarily as a military fortress for quartering soldiers and storing provisions and arms.

Museum guests entering the exhibition are treated to an extraordinary 18th century collection of New Spain’s famous paintings of the caste system (sistema de castas). “Connecting Texas” es una gran experiencia para quienes gustan de la cartografía del estado de la Estrella Solitaria, pues los mapas son valiosas herramientas para preservar y transmitir datos geográficos, de forma ordenada, por medio

de una representación visual, algunos de forma muy artística y atractiva. Y aunque la cartografía actual ha evolucionado a los mapas digitales, que viajan en los teléfonos inteligentes, los antiguos mapas impresos siguen siendo fuente de información topográfica, histórica y artística.

After countless visits to doctors and finding out about her daughter’s condition, Kela started doing research to find natural alternatives to treat the diagnosis. With little help, Kela took matters into her own hands and made the products herself. During the process, she managed to make her first line of future inventory including an Oatmeal Soap Bar and Whipped Body Mousse.

After the creation, the Nabors started sharing their products with family and friends. With a little coaxing from their peers, they decided to make this into a family business in 2013 in Chicago. They started as farmers markets in the Windy City, becoming an instant hit with their customers.

That same year, Kevin got a job in San Antonio, and the family had to relocate. They fell in love with the Alamo City and decided locals and tourists needed a friendly and progressive business like this. They, once again, returned to their farmers market roots and sold their products. Success was not far behind leading them to open a brick and mortar location.

“We get a lot of feedback, especially in the farmers market when it was a good period of growth,” said Kevin. “That’s the reason why we have over 50 different soap bars because we wanted to make sure that we catered to everybody.”

“Customers come in from Laredo and McAllen and they tell me they heard about it through their family members. We don’t make medical claims, just suggestions, and they say they no longer have the problems they once had,” said Kela.

With the natural skin product industry booming in the United States, Kela and Kevin are happy with the accomplishments that they have achieved and only wish to expand to more locations here and in Chicago, the place where her vision came to life. Today, her 11 yearold daughter, has not had any major outbreaks thus far.

“We want to continue to spread the love of clean beauty,” said Kela.

The Nabors want to make the world a healthier place by passing her skills set to the community. The store is currently hosting “Let’s Make Unicorn Bath Bombs” taking place on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m.; Friday, March 2 at 6:30 p.m.; and Saturday, March 3 at 1 pm at the store location. Tickets are $30 per person.

Despite being a San Antonio based program, veterans from across the nation are welcome to ask for assistance.

“Sometimes when you exit the military, they don’t always give you all of the tools that you need to go out in the civilian world,” Veronica Erdmann explained. “Sometimes the military job is not going transition to the civilian side,

“The Reloaded Program will be housing and employing homeless veterans and transitioning and atrisk veterans. Those on the verge of suicide, on the verge of becoming homeless, and selfdestructive behavior,” Veronica Erdmann continued. “We’d like to put a stop to that and get them on the right path. Get them the support they need, because it isn’t happening 100 percent like it needs to be.”

On Feb. 17, the Erdmanns opened up a thrift store on 9107 Marbach Rd. suite 140, which is only part one of many in store for The Reloaded Program. Veterans will be employed at the shop. They work strictly on donations of clothing, books, furniture, shoes, accessories and electronics. Anyone who donates will

receive a 20 percent off coupon on their next purchase. Their hours are from 10 a.m. 7 p.m. Wednesday though Sunday.

“A lot of people didn’t want a thrift store, so it took us a long time to get this started,” Veronica said. “We’ve been searching for over a year.”

Money collected at the shop will help them with a larger goal of purchasing properties to build miniature homes, so every veteran will have a place to live, and a sense of belonging. The program is in the process of receiving grants to fastforward the process to build houses.

So far, The Reloaded Program has partnered with local employers agreeing to hire veterans and offer on the job training, including a landscaping service, HEB on Potranco road, and a wood shop. The salon next door to the shop also offered to help clean up vets from the streets at no cost.

“We paired up with local employers that want to employ them,” Evan Erdmann said. “Theres been a few people that know that understand what going on. It’s something that helps everyone.”

In addition to The Reloaded Program, Evan hosts a communitywide event called Paintball

for PTSD every other month. It is an opportunity for veterans and anyone in the community to come out and ease a bit of tension by playing a good ol’ fashioned game of paintball.

Evan researched social work, and explained that the effects of people with PTSD, and says that playing paintball helps calm the aggression and other symptoms.

“We don’t discriminate anyone that comes,” Evan said. “It’s something we do. We don’t charge people. The goal is to retrain the brain. You can have the violence of action and still go home safe at night. You give them something they like, an adrenaline rush, but letting them know, hearing the gunshots, that they are still okay.”

El club de béisbol Tecolotes Dos Laredos, afiliado a la Liga Mexicana TripleA, cumplió invitación para realizar audiciones que le hizo el legendario jonronero Alejandro Ortiz (Pato) y Jaime Guerrero, presidente de Colt 45 Baseball League.

La comitiva beisbolera fue encabezada por el señor Grimaldo Martínez González, gerente deportivo, quien estuvo acompañado por el coach de receptores Marco Antonio Cruz, Carlos Martínez, asistente de la gerencia, Raúl Renovato, buscador de talento y coach, Antelmo Hernández, asistente de la gerencia.

Los “tryouts” (audiencias) lograron un registro de beisbolistas locales en su mayoría prospectos y novatos, que en sus respectivos turnos enseñaron sus respectivas habilidades sobre el terreno de juego.

La audiencia fue conducida por Martínez González y Cruz, quienes observaron habilidades de lanzadores y receptores.

El evento fue presenciado por aficionados y directivos de equipos que tienen equipos en ligas independientes de San Antonio y Colt 45 Baseball League.

tar a Gloria y Emilio Estefan sobre su relación y exitosa carre ra de más de cuatro décadas. Puras buenas vibras. Salí de su estudio de grabación en Mia mi esperanzado; siempre me pasa luego de hablar con ese par de talentosos optimistas. Prendí la radio del auto y todo cambió. Un tiroteo.

Otra vez en una escuela de Estados Unidos. El oído se me afinó y las palmas de las manos me empezaron a sudar.

Que no sea, por favor, en la universidad de mi hijo.

Que no sea en la escuela primaria cerca del vecindario.

Que no sea...Pero era demasiado cerca. A

menos de una hora de donde vivo. Un adolescente de 19 años con un arma como de guerra, granadas de humo y máscara antigás le disparó a sus excompañeros y maestros. Llegué volando al estudio de televisión y las imágenes estaban embarradas de sangre y desesperación. Tengo grabados en mi mente los gritos de una niña que, en su propio salón de clase, veía como se

llevaban a una compañera herida mientras otra, inmóvil, se quedaba en un charco rojo.

El ritual ya me lo sé. Lo he visto muchas veces. Primero los rumores con todas las cifras y datos equivocados. (Los periodistas veteranos, por regla, dudan siempre de los primeros reportes después de cualquier tragedia). Luego la reacción oficial. En este caso, el presidente Donald Trump negando la realidad en un tuit: “Ningún niño, profesor o cualquiera se debe sentir inseguro en una escuela del país”. Horas después, el golpe: las caras y nombres de los asesinados y heridos. Más tarde, los videos en los celulares. (Ya nada es privado, ni la muerte). Y al final, la mentira: los políticos prometiendo que esto no debería repetirse.

Perdónenme esta dosis de cinismo. Pero esto sí volverá a ocurrir en Estados Unidos, y volverá a ocurrir muy pronto.

En abril del 2007 tuve que viajar al Virginia Tech a cubrir la masacre de 32 estudiantes y profesores. Recuerdo haber entrado a esos salones de clase de la universidad y ver lo fácil que fue para el asesino, SeungHui Cho, disparar y matar. “Esto no puede volver a pasar”, pensé. Pero me equivoqué. En diciembre del 2012, Adam Lanza mató a 20 niños,

de 6 y 7 años de edad, y a seis maestros en la escuela Sandy Hook de Connecticut. El luto nacional no sirvió de nada.

Me ha tocado cubrir demasiadas masacres como para creer que hay la voluntad política para limitar el uso de las armas de fuego. Un dato: El diario The Washington Post calculó que ya en el 2013 había más armas que 357 millones personas en Estados Unidos.

Por supuesto que también hay masacres en otros lugares, como la ocurrida en París con 130 muertos, y hay naciones más violentas, como México, donde en el 2017 fueron asesinadas más de 25 mil personas. Pero matanzas, como la de la escuela en el sur de la Florida, se están convirtiendo en un fenómeno típicamente estadounidense.

“Esto solo ocurre en Estados Unidos, esta epidemia de matanzas en escuelas, una tras otra”, dijo en el pleno del senado en Washington, la misma noche de la tragedia, el senador Demócrata Chris Murphy. Somos responsables por las atrocidades que ocurren en este país, que no tienen paralelo en ningún otro lugar.

ing Friday, March 2 we celebrate the official State Holiday for Texas Indep e n d e n c e . On that day,

59 people signed the Texas Declaration of Independence document. Settlers officially broke from Mexico creating the Republic of Texas. The “Battle of the Alamo” was a significant part of that history which led to the signing of that document.

Texas History reminds us of the famous “Battle of the Alamo” that was fought in 1836 from Feb. 23 to March 6. Texas students in particular are taught in school that it was a pivotal event in the Texas Revolution.

The first time I remember visiting the Alamo was in 1956 when my family moved here from Dallas. We were here one whole week when we drove down to the plaza to see it. I remember how excited I got at the time thinking about the chance to walk through the

Alamo and see all the historical treasures. Over the years I have revisited it many times.

As a 10yearold fifth grader recently enrolled at St. Gregory’s Catholic School in Balcones Heights, we were ecstatic when my parents took my four younger brothers and me to see the historic shrine. My fifth younger brother Sam was privileged to be born in San Antonio in 1959.

Since my fellow classmates had already learned about the Alamo in third grade, I had a lot of catching up to do. Unfortunately, we moved again in 1960 up north and I didn’t get the opportunity to take a course in high school on Texas History. What a tragedy.

The Alamo began as the San Antonio de Valero, a Spanish Mission, in the early 1700’s, one of the first in Texas. The establishment of this mission played a crucial role in the settlement of San Antonio, and the Southwest. Those of you fortunate to have lived here all your life grew up already knowing that. I came to it much later.

I later learned that histori

cally in 19thcentury Texas, the Alamo complex gradually was touted as a battle site rather than a former mission. We know the Texas Legislature purchased the land and buildings in the early part of the 20th century and designated the Alamo chapel as an official Texas State Shrine.

The Alamo is now “the most popular tourist site in Texas.” Tourists from all over the United States and other countries as well, swarm to the Alamo and then leisurely stroll down the River Walk and check out other tourist sites in the city. The Alamo has obviously been the subject of numerous nonfiction works beginning in 1843.

Most Americans from elsewhere, however, are more familiar with the myths and legends spread by many of the movie and television adaptations including the 1950s Disney miniseries Davy Crockett and actor John Wayne’s 1960 film “The Alamo.” I saw John Wayne’s movie in Massachusetts months after I moved from San Antonio.

Pero si regulamos a quienes quieren manejar un auto, con exámenes escritos y pruebas para conducir, ¿por qué no hacer lo mismo con quienes desean usar armas? Es absolutamente irresponsable darle acceso a armas de fuego a quienes tienen antecedentes penales o problemas de salud mental.

En todo el mundo hay personas con desbalances emocionales. Por eso el asesino de Parkland había sido expulsado de la escuela. Pero la diferencia en Estados Unidos es que personas con record criminal y con enfermedades mentales pueden adquirir rifles y pistolas con más facilidad que medicinas sin receta.

Pero estas palabras son un desperdicio. La próxima masacre en una escuela ya está anunciada. Ni el presidente, ni el Congreso se atreven a hacer nada al respecto. De esto no se habla.

I taught in Harlandale ISD, a number of the elementary teachers took their students on a field trip every year to visit the Alamo. I volunteered more than once to be a chaperone. Unfortunately I was never picked since I taught high school.

I would point out in terms of ethnicity among the Texan defenders, 13 were nativeborn Texans, with 11 of these 13 being of Mexican descent. The rest of the Alamo defenders consisted of 41 men born in Europe, two Jews, two blacks, and the remainder were Americans from states other than Texas.

Today the Alamo still hosts living presentations and tours on an ongoing basis. Finally don’t forget the letter written by Colonel William B. Travis while under siege, to the people of Texas on display. And of course “Remember the Alamo!!”

And as always, what I write is “Just a Thought.”

Homenaje a los fundadores de San AntonioPor Dr. Alfonso Chiscano

En el transcurso de este, nuestro año Tricentenario, líderes de la ciudad, educadores, artistas, activistas comunitarios y muchos otros rendirán homenaje a los hombres y mujeres cuya sangre, trabajo y lágrimas fundaron y crearon San Antonio. Muchos de los monumentos más reconocibles de la ciudad, desde las misiones originales españolas hasta la Catedral de San Fernando, son un testimonio del legado de los fundadores de nuestro gobierno municipal.

Hay un modesto símbolo de recuerdo que no está muy lejos de San Fernando, una placa que honra a 16 familias, un total de 56 hombres y mujeres. Procedentes de las Islas Canarias, estas personas llegaron aquí en 1731 a instancias del Rey Felipe V, que quería retener el territorio para España.

Sin embargo, lo que estos valientes aventureros finalmente le dieron a nuestra ciudad contribuye a una historia mucho mayor. Es, como dice el marcador en la Plaza Municipal, la historia de los

“primeros colonos civiles de San Antonio”.

Al llegar a la zona, estos canarios se unieron a los coahuiltecos –los habitantes más antiguos de la zona– los frailes y los soldados del presidio español que estaban aquí para protegerlos y la misión para la corona española. Fundaron un municipio, el pueblo de San Fernando de Bexar.

El pueblo estaba ubicado en lo que entonces era el lado oeste de la Plaza De las Yslas, o, como se le conoce hoy en día, la Plaza Central. Pero sobre todo, establecieron el sistema de ley y orden de nuestra ciudad, los cimientos sobre los que se basa el gobierno civil.

Las vidas de estos 56 colonos civiles están entrelazadas con la historia de esta ciudad. Por ejemplo, representaron a los primeros 120 alcaldes de San Antonio. Y descendientes posteriores, como Robert L. B. Tobin, fueron parte integral del legado cultural de nuestra ciudad. Siendo un suscriptor de óperas y un campeón de las artes, Tobin llenaría toda un ala del Museo de Arte McNay con su inestimable colección de arte y diseño teatral.

Las contribuciones de los primeros canarios a nuestro sistema de gobierno y nuestro patrimonio cultural son inmensas. Pero también es una historia de valentía frente a dificultades abrumadoras, una historia que debería seguir inspirando a todos y cada uno de nosotros, y una que es relevante hoy en día: la búsqueda de una vida mejor en una tierra nueva.

Los colonos canarios enfrentaron tremendos desafíos, aguantando un viaje transatlántico que los llevaría hasta Veracruz, México. Las últimas 1,000 millas del viaje la recorrieron a pie. Piénsalo. Después de meses en el mar, los 56 canarios todavía tenían que caminar 1,000 millas para llegar a su nuevo hogar.

Tan grande era su deseo de una nueva vida, para e llos y sus seres queridos, que caminaron 1,000 millas para alcanzar esa vida mejor. ¡Qué lección de amor y dedicación nos han enseñado estos colonos!

Con el tiempo, los canarios establecieron ranchos donde podrían cultivar y cuidar el ganado. Durante la Revolución Americana, los isleños

canarios participaron en las campañas de ganado, proporcionando carne a los colonos que luchaban por la libertad del dominio británico, pero en los tiempos tumultuosos de la República de Texas, muchos canarios perdieron sus ranchos. A pesar de esta adversidad nunca perdieron su espíritu humanitario.

Su historia y su legado no pueden encajar en un simple monumento en la Plaza Central. Su legado comenzará a ser contado por las cinco estatuas de bronce que han sido comisionadas y que finalmente residirán frente al Juzgado del Condado de Bexar.

Si no fuera por la pasión por una vida mejor que impulsó a estos “primeros colonos civiles de San Antonio”, nuestra querida ciudad no sería lo que es hoy. Les debemos a nuestros fundadores tener la misma pasión para crear una ciudad aún mejor en los próximos 300 años.

El sábado 17 de febrero una asistencia cifrada en miles acudió a celebrar el 2018 Asian Festival en el Institute of Texan Cultures y disfrutar, de 10 de la mañana a 5 de la tar-de, demostraciones artísticas de danza folklórica, comida y otras expresiones culturales

expuestas por diversos gru-pos representando a diversos países.

Fueron presentadas danzas folklóricas de países de Asia como Japón, China, India, Filipinas e Indonesia, entre otros.

Desde luego, la parte artísti-ca fue complementada con la cocina oriental y las artes marciales. Este año se celebra el Año del Perro.

Durante la octava edición del partido “Pink In The Rink”, ofrecido por el club de hockey profesional Rampage de San Antonio, la pista de hielo del A&T Center fue pintada color rosa para honrar a sobrevivientes de cáncer y sus respectivas familias. La gerencia general con anticipación convocó al grupo de baile artístico de Incarnate Word High School para que, durante en el primer intermedio, presentara su colorida coreografía que a la vez alegró el ambiente, recibiendo por tan importante actuación emotiva ovación. Cabe anotar que la empresa Spurs Sports & Entertainment (SS&E) continuará adelante con sus propósitos de exponer el talento local en cada uno de los partidos que sostendrán los equipos de su propiedad: Rampage, afiliado a la liga AHL, San Antonio FC, con afiliación en el circuito USL y el pentacampeón Spurs, asociado a la NBA. En intermedio del partido Spurs vs. Cavaliers de Cleveland, un afortunado seguidor local fue elegido para que participara en la tradicional promoción H-E-B Beach Ball Mania. El fan logró ganar un certificado por la cantidad de $75 para compras en su tienda H-E-B de preferencia.

Gregg Popovich, entrenador en jefe de los Spurs, y del seleccionado nacional que par-ticipará en la Olimpiada del 2020, al concluir partido contra Cavaliers de Cleveland, felicitó al capitán LeBron James por su marca de más de 30 mil puntos anotados en la NBA.

En el concurrido partido Spurs vs. Cavaliers de Cleveland (AT&T Center) se dieron cita seguidores del equipo visitante capitaneado por el alero estelar LeBron James “King James”.

En partidos que Spurs juegan en el AT&T Center, frecuentemente se observan en las gradas paisanos del escolta argentino Manu Ginóbili, quienes así festejan su entrada a la cancha.

Directivos del Club de Béisbol Tecolotes Dos Laredos, encabezados por el gerente de-portivo Grimaldo Martínez González (primero de izquierda) recibieron cálida bienveni-da en el estadio Colt 45 durante la audición en la que participaron prospectos locales. El presidente Jaime Guerrero agradeció su presencia y les ofreció feliz convivio social.

Gilbert Rodríguez, fundador del equipo local independiente Tecolotes SA (ganador de siete campeonatos), se reunió con Jaime Guerrero, gerente general de Colt 45 Sports Complex, su papá Manuel Limón (La Liebre), manager del club Águilas, Alejandro Ortiz (miembro del Salón de la Fama, México) y el manejador internacional Juan “Pachín” Martínez.

Guadalupe Cultural Arts Cen-ter (GCAC) presentó el póster oficial del 37th Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Anto-nio, a celebrarse del 16 al 20 de mayo en los escenarios tradicio-nales de este magno evento de música tejana: Teatro Guada-lupe y Rosedale Park.

El póster alusivo fue creado por el artista Ramiro Andrade, quien obtuvo el Primer Premio General de un concurso dividido en varias categorías.

Andrade participó en la Cate-goría Abierta en la tomaron parte pintores y diseñadores profesio-nales, correspondiendo el Primer Premio (inmediato después del póster) a la artista Jeanne Richter. La Mención Honorífica fue para Belén García-Stanley.

El concurso, convocado por Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, atrajo la participación de un gran número de artistas profesionales y noveles que –con entusiasmo– compitieron en este concurso anual y donde las obras artísticas deben reflejar el espíritu de la numerosa afición a la música de conjunto en la comunidad y que se ha diseminado por todo el estado de Texas y estados fronterizos.

“Si bien El Álamo es muy importante para Texas y Estados Unidos hay mucha historia antes de El Álamo”, sostiene Marion Oetting-er Jr, curador de la nueva exhibición de San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) “San Antonio 1718: Art from Viceregal Mexico”.

Y esa historia a la que se refiere Oettinger, curador de Arte Latinoaméricano del SAMA, es el pasado de San Antonio como la frontera norte del virreinato de la Nueva España, lo que en tiem-pos coloniales fue México, que se extendió hasta casi la mitad del actual Estados Unidos.

¿Quiénes y cómo eran los pobladores de los presidios y las misiones cuando comenzaron? ¿Tenían re-ligión? ¿Quiénes eran sus autoridades? ¿Cuáles eran sus preocupaciones? son solo algunas preguntas que surgen de ese pasado que se remonta trescientos años atrás, al siglo XVIII.

Dada la falta de piezas de arte y objetos de ese pasado colonial de San Antonio, puesto que todas las mi-siones fueron abandonadas, Oettinger, como antropólogo e historiador de arte por 45 años, empezó una investi-gación por museos america-nos, mexicanos y colecciones privadas, de pinturas y obje-tos que describieran visual-mente cómo era el virreinato de la Nueva España al que San Antonio pertenecía.

Esta intensa exploración de cinco años se concretó con esta exhibición, que se abre al público con ocasión de la celebración de los trescien-tos años de fundación de la ciudad.

“San Antonio 1718: Arte del México Virreinal” presen-ta alrededor de 100 pinturas (paisajes, retratos), escultu-ras y objetos devocionales y decorativos. Las piezas fueron producidas a lo largo de un siglo (1718 a 1818).

Presentan póster oficial de 37th Tejano Conjunto Festival

San Antonio visto a través del arte virreinal de México en el SAMA

hecha en una conferencia con los medios informativos presidi-da por Cristina Ballí, Executive Director de GCAC, y la presen-cia de los ganadores de primer lugar y de menciones honoríficas de las 4 categorías en que se divide el concurso. Todos ellos recibirán un premio en efectivo a distribuirse en la ceremonia inaugural del festival el 16 de mayo.

Las categorías fueron Middle School, High School, College y Categoría Abierta.

Los primeros lugares corres- pondieron, respectivamente, a Madison Mesa, de Nimitz Middle School; Gavynne Rodrí-guez de Henry Ford Academy,

Sara Jean Ruiz de Texas A&M University.

En el mismo orden, las Men-ciones Honoríficas fueron asigna-das a los artistas Olivia González, de Jackson Middle School; Ciara Cásarez, de Communications Arts High School; y Lilibeth Flores, de Sam Houston State University.

Durante el festival se pre-sentarán un gran número de bandas y solistas de la música de Conjunto durante cuatro días de conciertos, clases de acordeón y exhibiciones en los dos esce-narios donde también habrá la oportunidad de adquirir discos compacto y regalos típicos del mundo de la Música Tejana.

Judge Karen Crouch unveils 2018 Family Fiesta Medal

The first Fiesta celebration be-gan over 100 years ago on April 21, 1891. It began during as a flower parade, as a celebration to commemorate those who had lost their lives defending the Alamo during the Texas Revo-lution. After 127 years, Fiesta continues to be celebrated in downtown San Antonio.

On Feb 15. Honorable Judge Karen Crouch, with the help of her esteemed husband Ger-ald Flores, unveiled the 2018 Family Fiesta Medal. Citizens and Fiesta royal court members gathered on the 21st floor of Frost Bank Plaza Club to see the newest design on one of the more recent medals representing Fiesta.

“It shows the diversity of our city and the diversity of cultures that we have, it represents the military, the artistic groups, the musical groups,” Judge Crouch said. “It brings everything that makes San Antonio together.”

From the age of 11 Crouch’s daughter has been personally de-signing the family Fiesta medal. Crouch shared that this would be the only year her daughter only submitted her theme for the medal because she is preoc-cupied planning her upcoming

quinceanera. “My little girl started getting

interested in the Fiesta Medals and the artistic quality of all the different medals,” Judge Crouch stated. “I took her out to Monarch trophy, to work with a designer. They scanned her drawing, they showed her how they chose the colors, and the process that was involved.”

Standing side by side, next to the covered medal design, Judge crouch and her husband stood in front of a crowd on its heels in anticipation. Jaws dropped, voices in awe, and hands clapped as the couple threw back the white sheet to unveil a spectacular design of

this years family medal. Two peacocks with their backs arched in opposite directions, with their bright tail feathers meeting at the bottom to hold the medal all in one piece.

“She (Crouch’s daughter) chose this theme because it’s the same theme as her quinceane-ra,” Judge Crouch said. “If you didn’t guess from the motif from the card, she has a love for peacocks.”

With the unveiling came the passing out of the 2018 family metal to all guests attending the ceremony. The crowd joined in with Crouch’s husband, Flores, chanting out loud for the entire 21st floor to hear, “Viva Fiesta.”

Tres etapasLa monumental pintura

titulada “Árbol de la vida y regla de los franciscanos menores” (Siglo XVIII) recibe

al visitante en el lobby del SAMA.

La pintura, proveniente de Monterrey, describe el árbol genealógico de la orden de los franciscanos (con San Francisco de Asís al centro), quienes jugaron un papel fundamental en la evangeli-zación de la Nueva España y Perú.

Luego parte de un arco decorado con querubines (que originalmente decoró la entrada de la capilla de la Virgen de Loreto en la Iglesia de San Francisco Javier, en Tepotzotlán) enmarca la ima-gen de San Antonio de Padua (patrón de San Antonio, TX, gracias a los primeros po-

bladores españoles y frailes franciscanos que llegaron a esta área el día de su santo: 13 de junio de 1691).

Esta exhibición de arte virreinal está dividida en tres partes: “People and Places” (Gente y lugares); The Cycle of Life” (El ciclo de la vida) y “The Church” (La iglesia).

“People and Places” recibe al visitante con la impresio- nante serie de imágenes “Cas-tas Mexicanas” de 1780, pin-tada por José de Páez (Nueva España, 1720-1790). En estas imágenes se visualiza el sistema jerárquico de castas que los españoles crearon para representar el mestizaje (mezcla racial de europeos,

nativos americanos y afri-canos). Los antiguos censos poblacionales de San Anto-nio también utilizaban estos conceptos.

En esa primera parte pre-senta retratos de políticos y líderes militares, algunos de los cuales vivieron en San Antonio, como, por ejemplo, el conde Joseph de Escandón y Helguera, quien fundó una serie de pueblos a lo largo del Río Grande; o Don Hugo O’Conor, quien apoyó la renovación de renovación y agrandamiento de la Misión San José y San Miguel de Aguayo. Asimismo, esta área presenta paisajes de lugares al norte de México, como

minas y acueductos.En “The Cycle of Life” se

ofrecen retratos de miembros de familias acomodadas en diferentes momentos de sus vidas: una alegoría de la vida desde la cuna hasta la muerte, retratos de infantes, jóvenes elegibles para el matrimonio, recién casados, ancianos y hasta fallecidos.

Local San Antonio author Jeremy Banas recently re-leased his new book, “Pearl: A History of San Antonio’s Iconic Beer,” this year for beer enthusiasts of every stripe.

The book highlights the history of The Pearl Brewery from its incorporation in 1887 to the Pearl we know today. The inspiration to start this book began after writing his first novel and having to condense the section about the famed location. For Ban-as, it was important to high-light its significance.

Banas also comes from a rich brewing background with roots back in Colorado. His cousins, Carl and Jo-seph Occhiato were the last owners of the historic Tivoli Brewing company in Den-ver Colorado from 1963 to 1969, where his grandfather also worked.

“When I was writing my first book with another au-thor, we did two chapters on the pearl and that was not close enough. We had to condense 150 years into two chapters and I really wanted to explore this with more information,” said Banas to La Prensa.

In 1887, The Pearl Brew-ery sold a refreshing drink that featured pearly bubbles. The overflow of German immigrants to Central Texas during that time brought expert fermentation, adding character to the refreshment.

The business evolved into the San Antonio Brewing Association, and XXX Pearl Beer became the mainstay of the largest brewery in the state. A regional powerhouse for more than a century, it was the only Texas brewery to survive Prohibition. It also endured the onslaught of a president’s scandalous death and Lone Star’s fierce rivalry.

When it came to doing the research for the book, Banas made ample visits to the library, read books and looked through archives, “in dark rooms without beer any-where,” he recalled. Through the process, he felt like he was a part of history.

In 2018, Marvel looks to surpass this number, with the strength of the hyped “Infinity War Pt. 1” and “Black Panther” on the roster. The first offering of the new year -- “Black Panther” -- has struck a racial conscience vein in our current tumultuous times. The movie is a benchmark as the first superhero film celebrating and embracing African culture, prompting countless to dress up in Wakanda garb over the open-ing weekend. The promotions have hyped the latest superhero entry as “The Godfather” of the MCU. Unfortunately, what we get is more “The Godfather Part 3” than Brando - a visually stimulating caper shot by Rachel Morrison (the first woman nom-inated for cinematography for “Mudbound”), that is a flat comic book adaptation benefitting from its urban mythos.

T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) was first introduced in “Captain America: Civil War”, where his subplot was overshadowed by Cap and Iron Man regularly engaging in contests of ‘punch face’ with each other. After his father is incinerated in a terrorist attack during a diplomatic sum-mit, T’Challa inherits the Black Panther shawl, wrecking both mortals and superheroes alike to

“Bless Me Última” captivates audience at the Classic Theatre

“Black Panther” doesn’t scratch the surface of Marvel hype

slate his thirst for righteousness. Now, T’Challa is the king of his hometown of Wakanda - an El Dorado-esque utopia fueled by the rare metal vibranium. The fabled city is hidden within the heart of East Africa, avoiding the outside world in fear of society abusing their precious resources.

T’Challa wrestles with the seclusion and quarrels with his on-and-off again girlfriend Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) -- a humani-tarian who argues that revealing Wakanda to the world would bring more good than harm. T’Challa’s mother Ramonda (Angela Bassett) and Okoye (scene stealer Danai Gurira) subscribe to the preservationist worldview: their hidden para-dise should continue helping themselves, rather than outsiders. Others like W’Kabi (recently os-car nominated Daniel Kaluuya) argue that it’s impossible to keep Wakanda isolated, in the midst of the tumultuous continent’s landscape. During the political debate, the Wakandians are tipped to the whereabouts of longtime foe Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis, so good sans the motion capture that has defined his career), a one-armed black markets dealer who is constantly pillaging their supply of the pre-cious metal.

The pursuit of the antagonist peaks in an eye-popping casino battle royals and white-knuckle chase sequence that masterfully incorporates rapper Kendrick La-mar’s original soundtrack. For a moment, it seems like “Black Pan-

ther” could be the cultural mas-terpiece that it promised. Instead, the film dissolves into borderline self-parody with the introduction of Killmonger (Michael B. Jor-dan). Jordan’s portrayal could be the worst take on a villain since Christopher Eccleston’s droll, forgettable performance as Malekith the dark elf in “Thor: The Dark World”. Every delivery is like the actor is reading off of cue cards, his line recital akin to a competitor narrating a campaign of “Dungeons and Dragons”. It’s a blatant miscast. Kaluuya would have been a much better choice for the villain; if “Get Out” came out before “Black Panther began production, the casting switch would have been logical on bankability alone.

With the advent of future sequels, and the A-list ensemble roll-called in the trailer of “Infinity War Pt. 1”, we are assured that the main characters of “Black Panther” will be okay. Whenever harm is delivered to the titular character -- or he is seemingly outmatched and backed into a corner -- we are comforted knowing that no harm will befall him or his eclectic entourage of super-people.

Without twists, Black Panther struggles beneath the weight of hyped greatness, clawing its way to a mid-tier berth in a stacked MCU filmography. “Black Pan-ther” is mostly familiar, benefit-ing from a powerful message of societal relevance. The visuals are stunning; the lack of stimulation -- not so much.

In 1972, Bless Me, Última, written by Rudolfo Anaya was published by TQS publications. It was an enduring journey for the story of Última and Juan Antonio to make it to the shelves for the public to read, but once it did, it would challenge views on religion and spirituality for decades to come.

On Feb. 17, The Classic The-atre, with their thespian troupe, brought Anaya’s work to life in their modest and modern set. A sold out crowd gathered to witness a tale of mystery and sorrow unfold before them. A single set, a Virgin Mary in one corner watching over the actors and audience, and a wooden bridge. Within two hours these props, utilized by the actors, transported the audience to 1940’s Guadalupe, New Mex-ico.

Directed by José Rubén De León, “Bless Me Última” pays tribute to the centuries long struggle between the belief and faith of Christianity versus the more pagan and elemental con-nection to the land the people are from. A story of trial and tribulation, constantly switching between Spanish and English, telling the tale of healer to those who believed in her or a witch to those who feared her.

A narrator appears (Carlos Alvarado), the protagonist, Juan Antonio, grown up, and reflect-ing upon the story of his youth to assist the theatregoers. It was a struggle to feel anything except anticipation. Juan Antonio (An-drew Treviño) is experiencing his youth in a time where the world has just ended a major conflict, the second World War, that took his brothers away, and changed them forever.

He struggles not only with the expectations of his family but also his inner conflict of his faith. He is constantly challenged to question his faith and love for the catholic church. Antonio experiences and performs acts some would consider brujería. This conflict would be escalated by the people he saw lose their lives and the drama he would

endure by standing by the side of Última (Marisa Varela).

Nothing less than the amazing acting can attribute to the emo-tional intensity of the drama that unfolded on a saturday night in San Antonio. A profound per-formance left the house in awe; thunderous applause erupted accompanied by a standing ovation for a theatrical execution one has to experience first hand to fully appreciate.

“Bless Me Última” Will be running through March 11 on select dates at the San Antonio Classic Theatre located at 1924 Fredericksburg Road. Tickets range in price from $17 to $32 depending on available seating. Tickets can be ordered online through the Classic theatre Web-site or at the box office during operating hours.

Local author releases book on S.A’s iconic beer

I know them, even though I couldn’t,” continued Banas. “You could feel connected and understand the gravity and how much The Pearl meant to this town after hav-ing done all of that and so it is profound act of the brewery.”

After finishing the story and sending in the manuscript, Banas wanted to celebrate his accomplishment with the owner himself. He visited Ot-to’s grave and had a beer with him. Although both men were alive at different times, they had a connection through history and beer.

Banas would like to contin-ue his journey through alcohol with future plans to write a book about booze through the perspective of dog-friendly lo-cales as well as another about the history of alcohol in Texas. As he simmers on his ideas for his next books, he is also pursuing a master’s degree.

For now, he would like readers and beer enthusiasts to learn about the historical landmark that evolved with the great city of San Antonio.

“Beer has been the center of a lot of things and where the beer is brewed, the communi-ty gathers,” concluded Banas. “With The Pearl having such a pronounced city presence, you hear the phrase ‘Puro San Antonio,’ I think the Pearl is puro San Antonio.

It emulates big history of the city as well.”

de sostener las misiones en lo que ahora es Texas. Oettinger destaca en esta sección el retrato de Fray Antonio Margil de Jesús, un fraile ejemplar que residió en San Antonio a principios de 1720’s.

Y es en esa área donde se ubica uno de los cuadros quizás más importantes de la exhibición, por su importan-cia para Texas: “El Martirio de los Franciscanos en la Misión de San Sabá” (pintado alrededor del año 1765) por José de Páez. Este cuadro es considerado una de las “pinturas más tempranas que retrata a Texas” y describe los violentos eventos que ocurrieron el 16 de marzo

de 1768 en la Misión Fran-ciscana de San Sabá, ubicada a 130 mi-llas al norte de San Antonio, cuando fue destrui-da por los indios comanches. El cuadro expresa el martirio de Fray Alonso Giraldo de Terreros y Fray José de San-tiesteban.

“The Church” incluye tam-bién una serie de retratos que expresan la devoción a la Vir-gen de la Inmaculada Con-cepción y su manifestación americana en la Virgen de Guadalupe.

“San Antonio 1718: Art from Viceregal Mexico” viene acompañada de un catálogo (a la venta en la tienda del museo) que incluye cinco ensayos originales escritos

por especialistas en historia virreinal. Es presentada en colaboración con el Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) de México con apoyo del Departamento de Arte y Cultura de la Ciu-dad de San Antonio.

La exhibición ya se encuen-tra abierta al público –hasta el 13 de mayo de 2018- en San Antonio Museum of Art (200 W.
