H.U. Knight: The Artist With a Camera
Harry Upperton Knight was born
in Sussex, England on July 6,
1873. He began his career as a
photographer as an apprentice
and subsequently opened his
own studio in Cranleigh, Eng#
land. In 1910, Knight immigrated
to Canada where he initially
worked in real estate in both
North Vancouver and Duncan.
Knight moved to Victoria in 1917
and began work again as a pro#
fessional photographer. Follow#
ing a short stint with the Wilfred
Gibson Studios, Knight opened
his own studio at 707½ (later 715)
Fort Street in 1918, where he re#
mained for almost 50 years. From
1918 to 1965 Knight specialized in
portrait, house, and garden pho#
tography as well as copy work.
His “camera sketches” show his
interest in the Pictorial photog#
raphy movement that began in
Europe in the 1890s and was
popular until the end of the First
World War. In addition to the
camera sketches depicting Vic#
toria and Vancouver Island
scenes, Knight also traveled to
Vancouver, Seattle, Los Angeles
and Mexico.
Knight retired in 1965 and died in
1973 at the age of 100. Knight’s
photographs were acquired by
the City of Victoria Archives in
1972.
