What an exciting way to begin the season! Three diverse composers whose works complement each other, from Tchaikovsky’s timeless piano concerto, to the dramatic and jubilant symphony of Dvořák, and all beginning with the brilliant colorizations of Hector Berlioz’s overture.

“(Pianist Yun-Chin Zhou is) a dashing virtuoso complete with dazzling fingerwork and shapely phrasing.” – Cleveland Plain Dealer

Concluding the program is a 100th anniversary – Szymanowski’s expressive violin concerto, featuring Robyn Bollinger, an internationally recognized young artist on the rise.

“Robyn’s playing is a refreshing combination of superb violin playing and wonderful musicianship with a strong sense of her joy in music-making …” – Miriam Fried, violinist

MOZART Overture to La Clemenza di Tito

MOZART Sinfonia Concertante Alice Hallstrom, violin Peter Sulski, viola

MOZART ‘Posthorn’ Serenade No. 9, K. 320

We all know him as ‘Amadeus,’ but now, some 250+ years after his birth, Wolfgang Amadé Mozart is still recognized as one of the truly great genius composers ever to set foot on this earth. His Sinfonia Concertante – featuring our Concertmaster Alice Hallstrom and Co-Principal Viola Peter Sulski – is part-symphony, part-concerto and richly beautiful in its interplay of soloists and orchestra.

“I pay no attention whatever to anybody’s praise or blame. I simply follow my own feelings.” – Wolfgang Amadé Mozart

WEBER Overture to Der Freischütz

AMRAM Greenwich Village Portraits – WORLD PREMIERE Kenneth Radnofsky, saxophone

PROKOFIEV Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major, Op. 100

American composer David Amram is truly a legend in his own time and his 35+ year musical collaboration with guest soloist Kenneth Radnofsky has resulted in some very important classical works. This afternoon’s concert features the World Premiere of Amram’s Greenwich Village Portraits for Saxophone and String Orchestra: a celebration of three of his Village muses, in styles expressive, commemorative, and soulful.

“Mr. Radnofsky possesses a high level of craft and communicative artistry.” – Boston Music Intelligencer

Delightful, romantic, wistful, expressive, and joyful music abounds as we pay tribute to National Women’s Month with works by women composers. Taking our cue from Anna Beer’s book, Sounds and Sweet Airs – The Forgotten Women of Classical Music, the program features Felix Mendelssohn’s sister, Robert Schumann’s wife, and several others, including two women from Boston. The brilliant, multi-talented Janice Weber is guest pianist.

“Ms. Weber is a concert pianist of cliffhanging panache and daredevil brilliance.” – The Wall Street Journal

VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Tuba Concerto Michael Stephan, tuba (Principal, Orchestra of Indian Hill)

FALLA Suite No. 2 from The Three-Cornered Hat

Continuing our ‘Showcasing Our Own Musicians’ tradition, we’re featuring the highs and lows of the orchestral range: the flute high, and the lowest-of-the-lows, the tuba! We’ll also hear three outstanding showpieces for orchestra: a work by immensely popular Tan Dun, a Romanian rhapsody, and some lively Spanish dancing.

“Melissa Mielens is outstanding in every respect. There is a reason why she has been Principal Flutist for so many years –– she’s that good! Our impressive Principal Tubist Michael Stephan has proven himself to be the solid bass sound of the Orchestra’s wind and brass sections.” – Bruce Hangen, conductor

ABOUT INDIAN HILL MUSIC

Now in its 32nd year, Indian Hill Music (IHM) is a thriving non-profit regional center for music education and performance. One of only a small group of non-profit organizations nationwide that encompasses a community music school, professional orchestra, and outreach programs, IHM serves 79 communities ranging from Greater Boston to Southern New Hampshire. We believe that music inspires both our hearts and our minds, encourages the growth and development of the “whole person,” and is integral to the lives of the individuals and communities we serve.

Our comprehensive music education program serves a community of 1,000+ students of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, where studying music, attending performances, participating in workshops, and performing with others are key components. Through the integration of the music school and our professional performance series, the transformative power of music is fully realized.

IHM’s professional performance season is anchored by concerts of the critically-acclaimed, 70-member Orchestra of Indian Hill, led by Artistic Director and Conductor, Bruce Hangen. Indian Hill Music also presents live performances by Music School faculty, Orchestra of Indian Hill musicians, and other renowned guest artists in our Jazz and Contemporary Series, Chamber Music at Indian Hill, and the Kalliroscope Gallery Chamber Music Series.

Dedicated to enriching the communities it serves by making music accessible to all, Indian Hill Music has developed strong and flourishing relationships through a full complement of outreach programming, serving some 7,000 people annually. IHM provides over $120,000 in need-based scholarships and community outreach programs, including performances and educational programs for public schools and free concerts for seniors. It is also the first community music school in the country to offer bedside singing for healing through its Threshold Singers.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE: As a result of generous contributed revenue, IHM is moving forward with an exciting new phase of its future: a new music education and performance center in Groton, Massachusetts, slated to open in 2020.
